WHAT: San Diego Unified School District is launching a major renovation project at Crawford High School in the College Area/El Cerrito Community. This project will upgrade athletic facilities at Crawford High, and prepare the campus for the next phase of improvements. Board of Education President Marne Foster will join Principal Ana Alvarez, students, parents, community members, and other district leaders in celebrating the start of construction with a ceremonial groundbreaking tomorrow.
WHEN: Tuesday, July 14, 9-9:30 a.m.
WHERE: Crawford High School, 4191 Colts Way, San Diego (92115) -- The ceremony will be held at the site of the former football field (now a construction site). Enter the gate off Trojan Avenue. (A map is available upon request.)

PROJECT INFO: This long-awaited project includes relocating and rebuilding the school's stadium, as well as constructing/installing a new synthetic turf field, all-weather track, new accessible bleachers, press box with an elevator for accessibility, sound system, scoreboard, goal posts, and new home/visitor entrance gates. A new athletic facilities building will also be constructed (approx. 3,648 square feet) with a ticket booth, restrooms and concessions for home and visitors. In addition, new athletic equipment storage facilities (approx. 2,160 square feet) will be constructed.
The baseball field will also be relocated and rebuilt. The new facility will include new accessible bleachers, an announcer's booth, concession stand, dugouts and scoreboard.
In addition, this project also includes the reconfiguration and remodeling of several interior buildings.

BACKGROUND: In response to Governor Brown's Drought State of Emergency Proclamation, the State Water Resources Control Board has awarded the San Diego Unified School District, in partnership with Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek, a grant totaling $1,243,445 to install storm water retention/reuse and water conservation best management practices at three area schools along Chollas Creek; Millennial Tech Middle School, Gompers Preparatory Academy and Horton Elementary. The grant will not only bring water quality and water conservation education to hundreds of students at the three schools, but will also provide for the development of career pathways to Science/Technology/Engineering/Math (STEM) conservation technology fields.
In addition, the San Diego Integrated Regional Water Management (SD-IRWM) program has recommended that a second grant, totaling $542,000, be funded by the State Department of Water Resources to Groundwork, in partnership with the San Diego Unified School District, San Diego Green Building Council, University of California San Diego, and San Diego Sustainable Living Institute. These funds will be used to address regional water and energy conservation needs through the retro-fitting of selected Encanto homes with a spectrum of technologies including graywater systems, landscape conversion and storm water capture, among others. Residential conservation measures will also be supported by water quality and water/energy conservation at the three above-mentioned area schools.
These combined programs will engage youth and families within Southeastern San Diego in an innovative multiple-benefits approach to mitigate the impact of catastrophic drought. This will be done through water capture and gray water reuse for food production and landscaping, as well as school site and in-home energy and water conservation installations and conversions. The programs will address the interlocking challenges of water, food and energy under the overarching crisis of climate change..

MEDIA ADVISORY - 10th Annual City Heights Giant Puppet Parade Celebration featuring Clark Middle and Rosa Parks Elementary students

At 8:15 am Tuesday, July 7, 2015, San Diego Guild of Puppetry lead artist, Felix Diaz’s whistle will blow, the drum group from Monroe Clark Middle School will set the beat, and rank upon rank of 6th graders will set out on a spirited march to their feeder elementary, Rosa Parks, in their 10th annual, “Welcome to Middle School” parade.
Students will parade with masks, giant puppets and banners that they have created, and as the middle schoolers approach the elementary playground, they will be joined by Rosa Parks’ graduating 5th graders, bearing the masks that they created. After parading before the entire school population, the procession, now close to 600 students strong, will march together back to Monroe Clark, marking the passage to middle school, in a larger than life celebration.
Funding for the original parade in 2006 came from an Arts and Culture Community Impact grant from The San Diego Foundation, with additional and continuing funding every year from A-I-S grants from the California Arts Council, a state agency, the NEA, a federal agency and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.
Mentoring the process, the San Diego Guild of Puppetry, is hard at work to make giant puppet parade pageantry an important element in the San Diego community at large. Several of the other public, multi-community giant puppet parades have included those at the Theatre of the World Festivals at SDSU, the opening of the New Children’s Museum, ocean and dragon themed parades at the Museum of Art, a number of Dia de los Muertos Celebrations, and parades along downtown San Diego’s waterfront.
Lynne Jennings, Guild Executive Director, explains: “Giant puppetry, by its very size, inspires awe. It builds stronger communities, as individuals become part of a committed team effort. It engenders the realization that working together, people can effect powerful and positive change. It invites participants and spectators of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds to join hands in celebration!”
Everyone is invited to come and cheer. The parade route will start at the Monroe Clark Middle School field (4388 Thorn Street, San Diego, 92105) go east on Myrtle and north on 45th to Rosa Parks (4510 Landis Street), circle the elementary school playground and then retrace the route back to the middle school.

Camping Trip Tradition Continues for Inner City Students
Central Elementary third graders head to Stelzer County Park for outdoors experience; Superintendent Cindy Marten will join them the evening of June 30
WHAT: Third graders from Central Elementary School in City Heights will be experiencing typical camping rituals (hiking, eating s’mores, sharing stories and singing songs around the campfire) when they head out on the school’s annual camping trip to Louis A. Stelzer County Park on June 30, July 1 and 2. It is often the first time the inner city students have been camping.

INTERVIEWS/PHOTOS: Central Elementary students and teachers, Stelzer Park rangers and program presenters, and representatives from the Jarrett Meeker Foundation. Superintendent Cindy Marten will be there the evening of June 30.
DETAILS: In addition to experiencing the fun of camping, students will be exposed to a standards-based learning experience that includes Kumeyaay Indian history, storytelling, artifacts and games; birds of prey presentation and owl pellet dissections; and native plant and composting education. Superintendent and former Central Elementary principal, Cindy Marten, will continue her tradition of camping with the students on June 30.
The Stelzer County Park icon, the park’s precious “wedding tree,” is starting to fail due to an attack by the Goldspotted oak borer pest. In order to keep the memory of the wedding tree alive, park rangers are attempting to clone the wedding tree and Central students will help start this project. The students will take small twigs from the wedding tree, dip them in a rooting compound and then grow little baby trees.
The trip is sponsored by the Jarrett Meeker Foundation, a local non-profit organization that provides programs related to wildlife, conservation and the environment for children and young adults in San Diego County. The foundation was established in 1987 in memory of 8-year-old Jarrett Meeker after his accidental death. Jarrett’s family was inspired by his love of nature. The foundation and the work that it does is Jarrett’s gift—his legacy—and keeps his memory alive. Since 1987, JMF has provided once-in-a-lifetime educational experiences to more than 100,000 children representing over 50 schools throughout San Diego County. Overall contributions to these programs total more than $500,000.
