California Secretary of State Alex Padilla will visit students at Mission Bay High School tomorrow, Dec. 2, 2015.

 

150 students will be on hand as Secretary Padilla discusses the importance of voter registration and the role young people can play in shaping the future through civic participation. 

 

Members of the San Diego County Registrar of Voters outreach team will also be present to help eligible students register to vote.

New Program Builds Bridges Between Community, Law Enforcement

Training Series Focuses on Building Communication, Trust in Southeast San Diego

 

WHAT:                 County leaders will join officials from the San Diego Police Department, the San Diego Unified School District, the National Conflict Resolution Center and residents to discuss their partnership to build relationships between police and residents of southeastern San Diego through a program focusing on strengthening communication, sharing experiences and changing perceptions.

WHY:                    The Art of Inclusive Communication is an innovative, multi-session training program at Lincoln High School that aims to build trust between law enforcement and residents of southeastern San Diego. This pilot training program is led by the National Conflict Resolution Center and brings together officers from the San Diego Police Department’s Southeastern Division and more than 40 students and parents. The training series builds communication skills by focusing on trust and understanding of how communication can break. The program is funded by the County of San Diego in support of Live Well San Diego, the County’s vision for healthy, safe and thriving communities and residents.

 

VISUALS:             Event will be in the school library; posters explaining the Art of Inclusive Communication training will be displayed.

BACKGROUND:  National Parent Involvement Day is a joint effort between San Diego Unified School District and the San Diego Unified Council of PTAs to recognize parents/guardians and the invaluable role they play in supporting a child’s learning at home and at school. Research indicates that when parents are strategically involved in children's learning, student achievement significantly improves and schools are more effective.

 

To recognize the day, schools were encouraged to host celebrations that honor parents/guardians and facilitate further parent engagement. National Parent Involvement Day was started 20 years ago by Project Appleseed.
