News Release from San Diego Unified School District: Black College Expo to Offer Opportunities for On-the-Spot College Admissions and Scholarships to San Diego Unified High School Students

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, Feb. 1, 2018

Black College Expo To Offer Opportunities for On-the-Spot College Admissions and Scholarships to San Diego Unified High School Students

San Diego -- Representatives from 26 historically black colleges and universities will be on hand to consult with San Diego students about their higher education options at the Black College Expo, a unique event that will include opportunities for on-the-spot college admissions and scholarships.

Howard University, Southern A&M University and Wiley College are among the institutions that will feature booths from 2 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 6 at the Town and Country San Diego in the Regency Ballroom.

Organized by the National College Resources Foundation, the Black College Expo is co-sponsored by the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego Unified School District.

“San Diego Unified is thrilled to be part of bringing this groundbreaking event to our city. We hope as many students as possible will come take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the unique post-secondary environments provided by our nation's historically black colleges and universities,” said San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten. “We believe in the academic potential of all our students to graduate ready for college, a career, and the community they will inhabit. The Black College Expo offers students the chance to put their college plans in place. That is why we are so grateful for the partnership with the County Office of Education and the National College Resources Foundation to make this event a reality.”

Juniors and seniors from high schools throughout San Diego Unified have been invited to bring transcripts and college placement test scores to the event to take advantage of resources, including personalized college counseling, and opportunities to receive college admission and scholarships on the spot.

"Our whole mission is to make sure kids are prepared for the next stage of life after leaving our schools," said San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold. "That includes making sure they're exposed to a multitude of options for college. The Black College Expo is a unique opportunity for us to connect students with colleges and universities that could unlock their future success."

The Black College Expo was developed nearly 20 years ago to help empower underrepresented students, demystify the college admissions process, and promote equal access to higher education by providing positive guidance and pathways. The event seeks to educate ALL students about historically black colleges and universities.

“For many students, college is the only on-ramp to the opportunity highway of the 21st century,” said Joe Johnson, dean of San Diego State University’s College of Education. “It is wonderful that our local district leaders are providing this unique opportunity to help students pursue post-secondary education.”

Education leaders from throughout San Diego will help kick off The Black College Expo with a VIP breakfast.

Media is welcome to attend. Please contact Isabella McNeil at imcneil@sandi.net or 619-341-2343 for more information.

San Diego Unified with the Government of Mexico to Offer Bi-National Students New Educational Resources

WHAT: A delegation from San Diego Unified will visit schools in Mexico as part of its commitment to support bi-national students with a donation of resources aimed at bridging the educational gap for students attending school across the border. In an effort to ensure that all students have access to a quality education, no matter which side of the border they reside on, San Diego Unified will visit a school and meet with educators, accompanied by the Department of Education of Baja California. The team will deliver educational resources, including books and curriculum.

WHEN: Friday, January 26, 2018 8:00 a.m.

WHERE: Office of the Mexican Consulate, 1549 India St, San Diego, CA 92101

DETAILS: San Diego Unified School District leadership, along with resource teachers and the department of Family and Community Engagement will embark on the Mexico visit Friday January 25 at 8:00 a.m.

Members of the media are invited to cover the trip departure.

BACKGROUND: The state of Baja California has been welcoming large numbers of US-born students. Over the past six months, more than 1,200 U.S. born students between the ages of 6 and 15 have enrolled in schools in the state of Baja. The Department of Education of Baja California reports that there are currently 55,404 U.S. born students receiving their education within Baja California schools, that engage in a cross-border education. Frequently traveling to and from the U.S. and Mexico for a variety of reasons. Parent deportation, the cost of living, and family obligations are among the reasons students transfer to Mexican schools. In some cases, U.S. born students leave their schools in the United States and enroll in a school, where they do not speak or comprehend the language.
