Chavez Elementary School Recognized for Changing Lives Through Literacy with Spectacular Student Showcase
More than 100 students and parents will take part in the special celebration hosted by the Masons of California
WHAT: The Masons of California will host a special event at Chavez Elementary School in recognition of their support for literacy through their Raising A Reader program. The celebration will feature student ballet folklorico performances. The event seeks to promote the importance of quality public schools rally communities in support of education. The Raising A Reader program has also been implemented in several schools throughout the district thanks to funding by the Masons of California. In addition to the California Mason dignitaries, Superintendent Cindy Marten and School Board President, Dr. Whitehurst-Payne will be in attendance.

Background: Franklin Elementary has deep roots in the city, serving generations of San Diegans from in and around Kensington and City Heights since 1929. Franklin became a San Diego Unified School District STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Arts & Mathematics) magnet school in 2013. Students at Franklin are involved in project-based STEAM learning throughout the year during school hours and there are many extracurricular STEAM activities for students after school including robotics, drama, Science Olympiad, violin, and math/chess club.
Magnet schools offer students a unique opportunity for in-depth studies in specific areas of interest, and attract a wide range of students. Options include: communications and community leadership, creative, visual, and performing arts, global citizenship, international studies, and language enrichment.
Though renovation planning is still in the design phase, the current plan for Franklin Elementary is to replace the old steel windows, repair interior and exterior finishes, and renovate restrooms. New building systems will include a public address system and repair or replacement of deteriorating plumbing where needed. The campus will also be improved by repairing sidewalks and ramps, modifying the existing security fence, and installing additional fencing.
Construction is estimated to begin in November 2020. Estimated cost is $35 million.
San Diego Unified’s capital projects are funded by San Diego Unified’s Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified.

MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified Partners with United Way and Dreams for Change to Offer Onsite Preschool Enrollment and Free Tax Preparation
WHAT: San Diego families may qualify for two significant benefits: Free preschool in San Diego Unified, and an earned income tax credit. San Diego Unified invites families to a resource fair for Preschool Enrollment and Free Tax Preparation Services to find out what services they are eligible for based on income. United Way of San Diego County and Dreams for Change will offer free tax preparation to qualifying families, and staff from the district’s Early Childhood Program Office will be onsite to enroll students in preschool.
Free preschool is available to income-qualifying families, and most households earning approximately $54,800 or less in 2018 qualify to file their taxes for free with a certified tax preparer.
The district is providing onsite childcare and refreshments on the day of the event. Feeding San Diego has generously donated pallets of fruits and vegetables for families to take home.

Background: The district’s partnership with United Way of San Diego County, Dreams for Change, the Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership (DEEP), and Feeding San Diego focuses on bringing resources directly to the community. The one-stop resource fair offers a convenient way for families to have their taxes prepared and enroll their student in preschool at one location. Tax preparers will inform families if they qualify for the earned income tax credit (EITC). The EITC benefits working families by putting money in their pockets for everyday expenses. Families can also learn about available resources offered by Feeding San Diego.

More than 150 students will take part in the celebration of the civil rights leader's birthday.
WHAT:The 10th Annual Las Mañanitas Breakfast will host over one hundred elementary and middle school students who participate in the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs. Since 2001, the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs have offered San Diego Unified students meaningful and innovative leadership development opportunities. The clubs are built on the ten values of Cesar Chavez and are designed to engage club members in leadership and community service activities. The San Diego Unified School District has the largest number of Cesar Chavez Service Clubs in California with more than 30 throughout the district. This year the event will honor Eliseo Medina, a Mexican American labor union activist and leader for immigration reform.
