Pacific Beach Middle and Mission Bay High School students will showcase their work highlighting the science and ocean-related careers unique to San Diego known as the BlueTech industry. Students will share various projects celebrating San Diego's growing BlueStem career opportunities as well as other science and computer-based projects. The BlueStem pathway is the latest collaboration between the two cluster schools, the Maritime Alliance and the San Diego Unified School District aimed at teaching students 21st century job skills to be career and college ready.

Wednesday 6/5 9:00 a.m. – 11:45 p.m. Success in Adulthood 4.0: The Fourth Annual Student Professional Development Conference at Kearny High School
The fourth annual student College and Career Conference "Success in Adulthood 4.0" will take place at Kearny High School. This year, with the support of the Youth Advocacy Department, we have the opportunity to serve over 600 students. Workshop themes have been defined by students and relate directly to student passion and identifying their purpose in life. Each theme is highlighted by title, and each workshop has been recruited and designed to help Kearny students become more successful as an adult. Themes include: College Planning and Successful College Navigation; Finances and Overcoming Adult Challenges; Civics and Advocacy; Arts and Entertainment; and STEM Careers.

Wednesday 6/5 – Thursday 6/6 7:00 p.m. American Cancer Society's Teens For A Cure, Relay for Life Event: La Jolla High School Coach Runs 110 Miles Around Track
Beginning on June 5, Tom Atwell, the Head Water Polo and Swim Coach at La Jolla High School will run 110 miles for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Coach Atwell will run the 110 miles (an extra ten since it's the 10th anniversary of running the 100 miles on the track) in honor of his former student Maggie Walsh. Maggie was a sophomore in Coach Atwell's AP European History class twelve years ago, Maggie lost her father - Carl Walsh - to cancer. Since then Maggie has dedicated herself to working as hard as she can to help those suffering from this dreadful disease and to raising funds that will provide care and eventually find a cure. During her senior year of high school ten years ago, working as the ASB president, Maggie challenged Coach Atwell to run a 100 miles on the track to support her efforts with the American Cancer Society in a Relay For Life event. Coach Atwell managed to complete the run and has been running 100 miles on the track every year since then. Coach Atwell will begin his run at 7:00 pm on June 5 and end around 2:30 pm on June 6. The Teens For A Cure event will kick off with his final mile at 2:30 pm on June 6th, on the track. Members of the community are invited to be there for the final mile. Coach Atwell also encourages community members to come out and run with him at any point between 7:00 pm on June 5th and 2:30 pm on June 6th.

Friday 6/7 – 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. San Diego Unified 3rd Annual Young Athletes Special Olympics
More than 200 students from preschool through second grade will participate in the event at Clairemont High School. The Young Athletes Festival is sponsored by the district's adapted physical education department and the Southern California Special Olympics. Join 7 district elementary school K-2 grade students with special needs along with their general education peers as they spend the morning doing a variety of sports activities. The Clairemont physical education classes, ASB and cheerleaders will be there to support the students and cheer them on. Young Athletes is a partnership between Special Olympics Southern California and the San Diego Unified School District, intended to introduce elementary students to sports skills and play activities that foster physical, cognitive and social development of young children with and without intellectual disabilities. All students participate in the program with their general education peers in classes co-taught by General PE and Adapted PE teachers. Opening Ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. The exhibition will start at 10:00 a.m. An award ceremony will be held at the end of the day to honor the athletes. Each athlete who participates will receive an award.

American Heart Association's American Heart Challenge Prepares Students for Success
Through Physical and Emotional Well-Being
WHAT: Roosevelt Middle School students and San Diego Unified School District officials will dance their way to heart health alongside American Dance Movement<http://americandancemovement.org/> co-founders Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman, "The Wave" singer Jillian Hervey from R&B duo Lion Babe<http://www.lionbabe.com/about/>, and choreographer Dexter Carr<https://www.playgroundla.dance/dexter-carr> at the nationwide kick-off for the American Heart Association's American Heart Challenge<http://american.heart.org/americanheartchallenge/>.
San Diego Unified students are the first in the nation to receive specially designed cardio-pumping content, created to be integrated into the district's school wellness plans, using dance as one way to motivate students to make healthier life choices.
The morning will be filled with live performances, choreography and dance demonstrations as part of the nationwide kick-off of the American Heart Association's American Heart Challenge.
The American Heart Challenge serves as an extension of the award-winning San Diego Unified Wellness Initiative<https://www.sandiegounified.org/health-and-wellness>. In its third year, the initiative has provided health and wellness resources resulting in several district schools earning the title of "America's Healthiest School" from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Schools throughout the district and county are encouraged to follow Roosevelt Middle School's lead and plan their own wellness campaign through the American Dance Challenge resources.
WHEN: Friday, May 31, 8:00 a.m. – 9:40 a.m. **Live shots available prior to event start time upon request.**
Press Conference will begin at 8:00 a.m. on the stage located in the field.

MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified Holds Third Annual African American Achievement Summit
WHAT: The African American Achievement Summit connects students with information and resources and is focused on high school students up to grade eleven. Participants will attend meaningful collection of workshops, meet mentors, mingle with their peers, and enjoy a free lunch. Students will choose from dozens of workshops to attend, focusing on African-American identity, student agency and empowerment, college access, paid summer internships, career opportunities and more.
WHEN: Tuesday, June 4

· Workshop Session 1: 9:40 a.m. to 10:25 a.m.

Background: The African American Achievement Summit was first held three years ago with a focus on students from grades nine to eleven from all San Diego Unified high schools. WHEN: 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2019. Reception from 4-4:30 p.m.; ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m.

BACKGROUND: The event recognizes seniors ranked in the top one percent of their high school's Class of 2019. More than 80 students will be honored, including all high school valedictorians. Principals, counselors, parents and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education trustees and Superintendent Cindy Marten. This annual event brings together students from all San Diego Unified high schools, where they are announced by their principal and receive a certificate and medal for their achievements.

PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS: Students and family members will be on hand to speak about their accomplishments and experiences. Each principal will introduce his/her students, and then move from the stage to outside the pavilion for photos; interviews can also be conducted there.
