San Diego Unified School District and City of San Diego representatives will join Taft Middle and Kearny High School students, and the Serra Mesa community, to celebrate the public opening of the newly completed joint-use park at Taft Middle.

BACKGROUND:

The newly completed joint-use park at Taft Middle School includes a grass playfield, a walking/running track, hardcourts for pickleball, tennis, and basketball, exercise equipment, new trees, benches, a drinking fountain, secure perimeter fencing, security lighting, and a parking lot with an access road. 

 

As part of the Play All Day partnership with the City of San Diego, the joint-use park will be accessible to the community as a local park after school hours and during school breaks.

 

Part of San Diego Unified's capital improvement program, the park opens to the public after school hours on Monday, June 5, 2023. 

 

A 6th through 8th-grade campus, Taft offers classes in Spanish, theater, art, common core mathematics, and engineering. As part of its Prime Time option, Taft offers before-and-after school programs in extracurricular activities and tutoring.

 

First led by Principal and San Diego Unified School District's notable Eugene Brucker, Taft Middle School opened its doors to the Serra Mesa community in 1962. 

 

The city also contributed funds for the joint-use park.

SD Loyal Soccer Players Participate in Sherman Elementary School Career Day

WHAT: Two members of the SD Loyal Soccer Club, Koke Vegas and Tumi Moshobane, will share their experiences as professional athletes with students at the Sherman Elementary School Career Day. The career of a soccer player is one of many that will be introduced to students. Other professionals will be on hand to discuss their careers, including a poet, scientist, nurse, humanitarian, and police officer.

ABOUT SHERMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Located in the Sherman Heights neighborhood and just east of downtown San Diego, Sherman Elementary School students are prepared for life in a global society by receiving a strong foundation in English and Spanish language arts (reading and writing via dual immersion), STEM education, history/social science, cultural understanding, media literacy, and the arts. The overall goal of the 21st Century Skills Program is to assure high academic achievement and to prepare students for the future by teaching core values and higher-order thinking skills.

 

ABOUT SAN DIEGO LOYAL SOCCER CLUB: Launched in 2019, San Diego Loyal SC is a men’s professional soccer team that competes in The USL Championship, one of the fastest-growing professional soccer leagues in the world. In its third season in 2022, San Diego Loyal SC saw record crowds at Torero Stadium (University of San Diego) and secured a second consecutive playoff spot.

WHAT: In recognition of June as Pride Month, students from the San Diego Unified School District will hold the annual ceremony to raise the Pride Progress Flag at district headquarters. District leaders, educators, and members of the Board of Education will observe the student-led event.

 

The ceremony highlights the district's ongoing commitment and education plan to promote safe and affirming school spaces for LGBTQIA+ students, families, and staff.

 

WHEN: 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2023

BACKGROUND: San Diego Unified is proud to support LGBTQIA+ students, families, educators, and staff members. On May 30, 2023, the Board of Education will vote on a resolution to declare June 2023 as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. The district recognizes its ongoing commitment to promote safe and affirming school spaces for students, families, and educators that focuses on intersectional diversity, acceptance, and unconditional support for our LGBTQIA+ students, families, and educators. The Pride Progress flag symbolizes the inclusion of marginalized groups within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Chavista Congress: Media Advisory Town Hall

Good morning Community Members, 

My name is Rosario Perez and I'm a program manager for the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs. The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs is an after school program (3rd-12th) in the San Diego Unified District schools, now expanding into the South Bay. We focus on teaching our Chavistas about community service, organizing and leadership. We also have our Chavista Congress Committee which consist of our elected Chavista Officers from their schools. 

The Chavista Congress is hosting a Town Hall Meeting tomorrow, May 25th from 5pm to 8pm. Chavistas will be discussing important topics regarding their concerns on the Climate Action Policy of San Diego and Food Justice as it relates to school lunches and food waste.
