San Diego Unified School Board Elects Kevin Beiser as New Board President and Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne as Vice President

SAN DIEGO (December 13, 2017) – The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education elected new officers at its annual organizational meeting Tuesday. Kevin Beiser, from District B, was selected as President; and Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, from District E, was elected as Vice President.

Mr. Beiser takes on his new role after serving as Board Vice President. He will continue to focus his efforts on maximizing the district's resources in order to preserve lower class sizes and enrichment programs for our children such as art, music, magnet schools and GATE. Mr. Beiser is passionate about implementing research-based reforms that have helped turn around underperforming schools.

Following Tuesday's election, Mr. Beiser stated "I am truly honored and humbled to be elected President of the San Diego Unified School Board tonight by my colleagues. I will continue to fight for our kids. I am committed to continuing to strategically allocate our finite resources in an equitable manner to improve student outcomes." Mr. Beiser will chair the meetings of the Board and will act as the district's chief elected official during the tenure. He hands over the Vice President role to Dr. Sharon Whitehurts-Payne.

Dr. Whitehurst-Payne has spent the last 44 years supporting students and teachers in the San Diego Unified School District in various capacities from professional educator to volunteer.

program and a ribbon tying ceremony.

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: San Diego Unified School District Board of Education Trustee Dr. Mike

McQuary, Superintendent Cindy Marten, Facilities Planning and Construction Chief Lee Dulgeroff, Pacific

Beach Middle School Principal Kimberly Meng, Pacific Beach Middle School student Jade Muckler; and

from the YMCA District Executive Sue Ball, Executive Manager Mike Roberts and volunteer Lily Higman.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Turf Field and Site Improvements (SDUSD, completed) : A joint-occupancy turf field is

constructed, surrounded by an asphalt concrete track and perimeter landscape/drainage areas. The

new field is striped for multiple sports, including soccer, field hockey and girls and boys lacrosse.

Project also includes a new parking lot, new sidewalks, upgrades to staff and student restrooms in

the Physical Education Building, and new perimeter fencing. Vehicle circulation is improved with a

redesigned bus turnaround, student drop off, and pick up. The new parking lot features ornamental

pavers, light poles, tree wells, landscaping islands, perimeter landscaping, and a new bike rack.

This project provides improvements that satisfy accessibility and California Building Code

requirements.

Whole Site Modernization and New Building (SDUSD, planned) : Includes construction of a new

two-story, 26 classroom building. Improvements to existing buildings include the relocation of school

administration offices, renovation of the food service area, and three new classroom/innovation

spaces in the library media center.

New air conditioning installation takes place in the existing science classroom building, library

media center, and auditorium. Campus wide upgrades include security, fire alarm, data and

communication infrastructure. The project provides accessibility and other improvements to satisfy

California Building Code requirements.

Beach & Bay Family YMCA Project: The YMCA's vision is to expand its presence in San Diego's

beach and bay communities by building a state-of-the-art YMCA fitness center in Pacific Beach in

partnership with the San Diego Unified School District. This new facility, located on the Pacific

Beach Middle School campus at the corner of Ingraham and Felspar, will partner with teachers,

staff and families to provide year-round care for local youth. While fundraising efforts to help build

the new facility are still ongoing, the Y currently offers a selection of programs for families to

participate in and help strengthen their spirit, body and mind.

The YMCA will unveil its new outdoor fitness area at the ceremony. The Y partnered with Aire

Fitness to provide the fully customized portable fitness studio with professional equipment. This will

soon be open to the public.
