On behalf of the more than 1 million students we serve, we welcome the efforts by the Newsom administration to make the reopening of public school classrooms a priority. As we noted in our letter of November 2<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FTYujcLhpeMR3N1WRko0-OgUdMMr_9WH/view?usp=sharing>, it will take a coordinated effort at the state and local levels to reopen classrooms as soon as possible while protecting the health and safety of all in the school community.

We will look carefully at what is being proposed and intend to provide feedback to the Governor and his staff, as well as our legislative representatives in Sacramento, to make sure the guidelines address the needs of students and families served by large, urban districts across the state.

We recognize much time has been put into the Governor's plan, as two months have passed since our letter of November 2. We will provide a thorough response prior to the Legislature reconvening on January 11.

NBA Champion Norman Powell Picking Up Holiday Shopping Tab for Hundreds of Lincoln High Families

WHAT: Holiday shopping spree at Walmart for randomly selected families of Lincoln High School students to purchase groceries, clothing, personal care items and gifts. Families will receive $400 to shop with at Walmart, courtesy of the Norman Powell Family.

WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 19, 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. Walmart has agreed to open the College Avenue location early to give the Lincoln families full access to the store before it opens to the public at 7 a.m.

WHERE: Walmart, 3412 College Ave., San Diego, CA., 92115

DETAILS: A media pool has been established for this event. Video coverage and interviews of participants, and Lincoln High School representatives, will be available.

BACKGROUND: San Diego native and current Toronto Raptor Norman Powell has personally pledged $100,000 as a way to give back to his alma mater through the lives of approximately 250 families with students who currently attend Lincoln High School. Powell is a 2011 Lincoln graduate.
After graduation, Powell went on to become a star member of the UCLA men's basketball team and graduated with a degree in history in 2015.
Although Powell currently lives in Toronto he remains committed to his roots in San Diego and wants to inspire his fellow Hornets to stay connected and give back to where they came from and make a positive impact in their community.
Powell has personally pledged to consistently give to Lincoln High School families as long as he is able. Each year he hosts a free basketball camp at Lincoln under his brand, Understand The Grind. This past Thanksgiving he funded the cost of groceries for 250 families.

Families who participate in the Holiday shopping spree will follow COVID-19 safety measures and protocols.

MEDIA ADVISORY: DR. SEUSS ON THE LOOSE

Dr. Seuss Books Handed Out at Grab n' Go Meal Sites Courtesy of The Old Globe

WHAT: Dr. Seuss books will be given out, one book per family, while supplies last at some San Diego Unified meal distribution sites, where more than 9 million grab-and-go meals have already been distributed since COVID-19 forced schools to close in March. The Old Globe is donating 1,000 books to San Diego Unified students. Families can receive a free book while picking up free nutritious meals for their students.

WHEN: Friday, Dec. 18, 12 p.m.

WHERE: Porter North Elementary School, 445 S. 47th St., San Diego, CA., 92113

BACKGROUND: San Diego Unified meal-distribution sites have served as a support line to the community for many families since COVID-19 forced schools to close in March. In addition to distributing more than 9 million meals, San Diego Unified food service employees have helped hand out everything from boxes of groceries and digital thermometers to menstrual products and to Census information to families.

Books by the iconic author will be distributed on Friday to some San Diego Unified families thanks to a donation from The Old Globe. Theodor Seuss "Ted" Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, adopted San Diego as his hometown, living in La Jolla from the time he moved there from Massachusetts in 1948. It was here that he became a world-renown author, writing classics including "The Cat in the Hat," "Green Eggs and Ham" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" Dr. Seuss' legacy can still be seen across many places around the San Diego landscape, including The Old Globe, which presents an annual production of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" This year's show will be performed on the radio.

VIDEO AVAILABILITY: Video of the book distribution can be gathered at Porter North Elementary. A media pool has been established for this event.

Meal Distribution over Holiday Week: Healthy meals are available for all children Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 21 to Dec. 23, next week at 21 sites throughout the district. Meals can be picked up from noon-2 p.m. Each child will receive five meals per day all for free (children do not need to be present). Each site will also be giving away boxes of grocery items on one of the three days. Each family can receive one box, while supplies last. A list of the 21 open sites can be found on the district website. Click on 'Meal Pick-Up Locations.

INTERVIEWS: District representatives will be on hand to help distribute books and talk to media.

San Diego Unified Starts COVID-19 Testing at Elementary Schools Under UC San Diego Partnership

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Unified has started voluntary COVID-19 testing for students and staff at several elementary schools, under a partnership with UC San Diego Health. The testing initiative is part of a broader district effort to keep students and staff safe, while expanding in-person learning amid the worsening pandemic. The safe reopening strategy was developed in collaboration with some of the nation's leading experts on infectious diseases at UC San Diego.

"The end of the COVID-19 crisis is now in sight with the development and delivery of a safe and effective vaccine, and that has given us all cause to hope. In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to continue operating safely despite the worsening infection rates in our community. That is why testing is essential," Superintendent Cindy Marten said.

San Diego Unified collaborated with UC San Diego to establish strict health and safety reopening guidelines<https://www.sandiegounified.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_27732394/File/SDUSD_Scientific%20Panel%20Review_FINAL.pdf>, which call for widespread COVID-19 testing. San Diego Unified's testing plan was announced in November. The Board of Education voted to authorize an initial $5 million investment in the testing plan, which includes a joint laboratory services testing agreement with UC San Diego Medical Center<https://go.boarddocs.com/ca/sandi/Board.nsf/files/BW8W3L8379E9/$file/SDUSD%20(PS21-0543-21)%20First%20Amendment.pdf>. The board is poised to ratify that agreement at its meeting today. Eventually, the testing program could be expanded to include all 100,000 students within the district and its more than 10,000 staff members.

"Scientific models from our colleagues at UC San Diego show we can prevent 90 percent of all transmissions on campus with effective testing every two weeks," Superintendent Marten said. "That level of protection will not only help us reopen schools; it will help us keep them open, and avoid the back-and-forth, open-and-shut problems that have plagued other school systems."

Free COVID-19 tests will be available to students and staff at 10 district elementary schools this week, with additional testing to be offered from Jan. 4 through Jan. 15. The goal is to test every student and staff member every two weeks, starting with those on campus for the first phase of school reopening. Campuses have been selected based on generally higher local case rates of community infections, combined with student and staff participation rates in appointment-based learning.

The tests will be administered in campus auditoriums and multi-purpose rooms by medical professionals from UC San Diego Health in conjunction with staff members from the district's health office. Using PCR tests, the procedure takes about 15 seconds to swab both nostrils, and the swab itself is inserted roughly the same distance as a common nasal spray applicator.

"The science is clear when it comes to the importance of COVID-19 testing, even if a person has no symptoms. It is a critical component in slowing and containing the spread of COVID-19, along with measures like masking, social distancing and proper hand hygiene," said Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health. "Swabbing a mouth or a nose is quick and easy. And it can ultimately help save lives."

Test results will be available approximately 24 hours following the test. Individuals who test positive will receive a phone call from a UC San Diego health professional and follow up from district nursing staff. Results can be accessed through UC San Diego My Chart<https://myucsdchart.ucsd.edu/ucsd/Authentication/Login?>. Students and staff members who test negative may get retested every two weeks. Those who test positive for COVID-19 would not be re-tested for 90 days

"The implementation of COVID-19 testing is an important tool for district campuses in identifying and limiting the spread of the coronavirus," district physician Dr. Howard Taras said. "Although voluntary, I strongly urge student and staff participation in the testing program for their health and the health of others."

"Even after the vaccine rolls out this winter, I anticipate that testing will remain an important tool for schools. I do not anticipate that school-age children will be offered the vaccine for many months after the vaccine is available to adults," Dr. Taras said. "There is very little research on the effectiveness of this vaccine on children under 12. And while we are hopeful that it will be just as effective in younger age groups as it is in adults, vigilance about reducing the numbers of potentially positive and infectious children on our campuses via testing will remain an important precaution for many months after staff members are vaccinated."
