NEWS RELEASE: U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education and San Diego Unified Leaders Join City Heights Students, in Dedicating New George Walker Smith Education Campus

News Release

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education and San Diego Unified Leaders Join City Heights Students, in Dedicating New George Walker Smith Education Campus

Wednesday, September 27, 2023

SAN DIEGO - One of the largest public investments in City Heights’ history is officially complete, as the George Walker Smith Education Campus was formally dedicated.

Named after the first African-American elected to office in San Diego County, the George Walker Smith Education Campus houses the completely rebuilt Wilson Middle and Central Elementary Schools.

On Wednesday, Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson welcomed U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Cindy Marten, the family of the late George Walker Smith, Central and Wilson students, and community members to help celebrate the new schools and their namesake. Students from Hoover High School’s Army JOTC, drumline, mariachi band, and cheer team performed during the festive event

“We dedicate this campus to past, current, and future students, but also to the City Heights community,” said Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson. “We acknowledge Mr. Smith for his devotion to young students and bringing people of all ethnicities together.”

Opened in 1938 as a one-building school along Polk Avenue, the former Central campus was expanded throughout the years to keep up with growing student enrollment. Predating Central, Wilson was originally built in 1924 as a two-story schoolhouse, serving the thriving suburban community along El Cajon Boulevard.

Now located along Orange Avenue,  the new campus provides seven modern buildings, including a new Performing Arts Center and a parking structure with roof-top playcourts to the Wilson Middle site, and nine new buildings to Central Elementary.

On the Central side are 26 new general-purpose classrooms, 14 specialized classrooms, a Library Learning Center, a multipurpose room, an after-school program room, a community clinic, a health center, student services offices, and three new play areas.  Each of the general classrooms has access to an approximately 280-square-foot collaborative space designed for pull-out instruction. Specialized classrooms include five kindergarten classrooms, five special education classrooms, and four preschool classrooms.

A large, centrally located soccer playfield will be built and included in a joint-use area that will also include the roof-top hardcourts at Wilson Middle.  Along with a promenade connecting Orange Avenue to El Cajon Boulevard, this innovative play area will be shared by both schools and with the broader community as a park after school hours.

Former San Diego Unified Superintendent and Central Principal, Marten advocated for the campus rebuild project.

"San Diego and Central Elementary will always hold a special place in my heart, and to return to a campus that has been completely transformed is awe- inspiring,” said Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten. “San Diego Unified’s commitment to quality facilities that foster high-quality teaching and learning, its intentional involvement of staff, families, students and neighbors in the design process, and the outcomes these projects are producing, demonstrate how the school district is raising the bar for its students."

The new Central opened to students in August, and plans are underway to redevelop the former Central campus.

“Bond funds have single-handedly transformed City Heights and communities within my district and beyond,” said Richard Barrera, a Board of Education Trustee. “We’re transforming the lives of our students while also transforming communities at the same time.”

Barrera and the Board of Education voted unanimously to name the campus that hosts Central and Elementary and Wilson Middle after George Walker Smith in March 2021.

Smith made local history when he was elected to the Board of Education in 1963. Serving for 16 years, Smith initiated a diversity campaign to encourage trustees to travel to historically black colleges to recruit black teachers and educators.

“George personified equity for all students and spent his life building civic engagement throughout San Diego,” said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, Board of Education Trustee for San Diego Unified. “He was a legend then and his legacy lives on to this day.”

NEWS RELEASE: Record Number of San Diego Unified Schools Recognized as America’s Healthiest Schools

NEWS RELEASE

Record Number of San Diego Unified Schools Recognized as America's Healthiest Schools

San Diego Unified receives 30 awards, most in state

SAN DIEGO – Thirty schools in the San Diego Unified School District have been awarded the distinction of America's Healthiest Schools for their dedication to supporting the health and well-being of students, staff, and families. San Diego Unified earned more America's Healthiest School Awards than any other district in California and ranked fifth in the nation for the distinction.

"As a school district, our commitment is to foster environments where all members of the school community can learn, grow, and thrive. This includes supporting the physical, mental, and social-emotional health and well-being of students and staff," Board of Education President Sabrina Bazzo said. "These awards demonstrate the exemplary job our educators and staff are doing in schools and classrooms across the district to support the whole child."

San Diego Unified has invested in a comprehensive and system-wide approach to school wellness since 2016. Every school has a designated school wellness coordinator and are encouraged to create wellness committees of staff, families, community partners, and student wellness ambassadors to help ensure they are prioritizing health and wellness in all its facets.

"In San Diego Unified, wellness is a comprehensive and collaborative approach that supports the whole school, whole community, and whole child," said Kate McDevitt, the district's Wellness Program supervisor. "This national recognition is a wonderful opportunity to spotlight our dedicated School Wellness Coordinators, who are working to create healthier school communities. We couldn't be more thrilled for our awardees."

Presented by Alliance for a Healthier Generation, America's Healthiest Schools is an annual recognition program that celebrates schools for implementing policies and practices to promote health and well-being.

Schools are recognized for demonstrating remarkable efforts to prioritize the essential health needs of their school community and exceeding best practice standards in one or more topic areas, including:

  • Increasing Family & Community Engagement - Facilitating collaborations to meet student, family, and caregiver needs alongside student learning and development
  • Strengthening Social-Emotional Health & Learning – Supporting the social-emotional, mental, and behavioral health of students
  • Cultivating Staff Well-Being - Helping staff build and maintain resilience through policies and practices that promote self-care, positive work culture, and healthy behaviors
  • Improving Nutrition & Food Access - Promoting and increasing healthy eating and food access through school nutrition programs and nutrition education
  • Implementing Local School Wellness Policy - Advancing health-promoting practices through implementation of the district's wellness policy
  • Bolstering Physical Education & Activity - Providing opportunities for students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to develop and sustain lifelong physical activity practices
  • Promoting Tobacco-Free Schools - Fostering a tobacco-free learning environment through implementation of the district tobacco-free policy
  • Enriching Health Education - Providing educational experiences for students to gain health literacy, make healthy decisions, and adopt health promoting behavior
  • Supporting School Health Services - Providing services to address and prevent health concerns, health emergencies, and chronic health conditions

The 30 San Diego Unified schools being recognized are among the 781 schools nationwide to be named as America's Healthiest Schools for the 2022-2023 school year. Healthier Generation's list of America's Healthiest Schools remains one of the country's longest-running, nationwide recognition programs honoring schools for achievements in supporting the whole health of students, teachers, and staff.

"This year, Healthier Generation continues to meet districts, schools, and educators where they are, recognizing it takes a considerable degree of effort to serve as a model of best practice in whole child health for students, teachers, staff, and community," said Kathy Higgins, chief executive officer at Healthier Generation. "We commend America's Healthiest Schools for demonstrating resilience and adaptability amid challenging times for our nation's schools."

Any school can connect with Healthier Generation to access trainings, resources, and technical assistance by visiting HealthierGeneration.org.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Logan Memorial Educational Campus Partners with Veterinary Industry Leader in DEI to Inspire and Support Future Veterinarians

MEDIA ADVISORY

Logan Memorial Educational Campus Partners with Veterinary Industry Leader in DEI to Inspire and Support Future Veterinarians

September 21, 2023

SAN DIEGO - Logan Memorial Educational Campus (LMEC) is hosting the nationally-recognized veterinary diversity, equity, and inclusion program BLENDvet to educate and empower youth on the vast opportunities in veterinary medicine. Through immersive hands-on experience, students at LMEC will be introduced to the veterinary field as a career path. The event is sponsored by the American Association of Animal Hospitals (AAHA), which is currently hosting a veterinarian conference in San Diego.

WHAT:  Diversity-focused event engaging elementary and middle school students in a hands-on experience introducing them to the veterinary field as a career path

WHEN: Friday, September 22, 10:30 a.m.-noon

WHERE: Logan Memorial Educational Campus - 2875 Ocean View Blvd, San Diego, CA 92113

VISUALS: Students in medical gowns practicing suturing on a life-like animal model; students learning how to perform a physical exam with actual dogs; students learning how to perform animal CPR and bandage wounds for pets

BACKGROUND: The veterinary field is one of the least racially and ethnically diverse fields. According to BLENDvet founder and CEO Dr. Niccole Bruno, only 6 percent of veterinarians are Latinx, 4.5 percent are Asian, and less than 3 percent are Black. The BLENDvet group is working with veterinary industry leaders nationwide to inspire more young people from underrepresented communities to enter the veterinary career path. San Diego Unified School District and LMEC believe exposing students at a young age to career paths that they may not have previously been aware of or believed are not available to them because of underrepresentation is an important part of the educational system.
