NEWS RELEASE -- SDG&E, SD Unified Partnership Saves Parents Money

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, November 18, 2009

SDG&E, SD UNIFIED PARTNERSHIP SAVES PARENTS MONEY

Data Sharing Increases Enrollment in Utility Discount Program

SAN DIEGO An innovative partnership between the San Diego Unified School
District and San Diego Gas and Electric Company has reduced gas and electric
bills by 20% for 2,719 San Diego families, with more to come.

Under this innovative partnership, the school district is sharing its list
of families qualifying for the federal Free and Reduced Priced Lunch Program
with the utility. Chances are, families whose children qualify for free
lunch also qualify for the California Alternative Rate for Energy (CARE)
program. The program also helps the school district, since SDG&E provides a
$15 per household payment for each new CARE program participants from the
program.

The first check from SDG&E to San Diego Unified, for $40,785, was presented
at the Board of Education meeting on Nov. 17.

³We¹re happy that SDG&E is able to bring this program to our families,² said
Shelia Jackson, SDUSD Board of Education President. ³In this difficult
economy, every bit helps.²

The CARE program offers income-qualified households a 20 percent discount on
their energy bill.

³This extraordinary partnership between the school district and SDG&E just
shows how much caring there is for our San Diego families both at school and
at our company,² said Mitch Mitchell, regional vice president for external
affairs for San Diego Gas & Electric. ³This is a program that¹s available to
all low income customers in California. Working with San Diego Unified has
made contacting these families just that much easier.²

The first phase of the program resulted in 2,719 families signing up for the
CARE program. At least two more groups of addresses will be forwarded to the
utility over the coming months.

For more information on the CARE program, contact SDG&E at (800) 644-6133.

Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the problem solvers of tomorrow.

CAMM Program highlights include: original PSAs that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website, www.connectamillionminds.com, where parents and community members can pledge to connect young people with the wonders of science; "The Connectory", a one-of-a-kind online resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find informal science and technology learning opportunities in their communities; grants to support non-profit organizations that bring stimulating, high-quality and affordable after-school STEM learning to students; TWC employees, over 47,000 strong, who volunteer their time at community events like science fairs and robotics competitions, and share their passion for engineering and technology with students at CAMM career days. TWC's national CAMM partners are CSAS (Coalition for Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). NEWS RELEASE -- SD Unified Schedules Budget Town Hall Meetings

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, November 13, 2009

BUDGET TOWN HALLS TO COVER DISTRICT

Meetings Give Public Opportunity to Discuss Budget Cuts

SAN DIEGO With the San Diego Unified School District facing a budget cut
of $80 million or more in the next school year, the Board of Education has
scheduled town hall meetings with the public in the coming weeks to open up
the public discussion.

All San Diego Unified taxpayers, including parents and guardians, students,
district employees and interested citizens are urged to attend.

³We are facing a third year of severe budget reductions by the state of
California,² said Shelia Jackson, president of the Board of Education.
³We¹ve made this district a lean, mean, educating machine over the last two
years. These new cuts will require us to eliminate programs and affect our
ability to effectively teach.²

Attendees will learn more about the budget crisis and offer ideas and
feedback to Board members on the best ways to balance the budget for the
2010-11 school year.

Here are the upcoming meetings, all being held from 6:30-8 p.m.

NEWS RELEASE -- San Diego School Innovation at Saturday's Magnet School Fair

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, November 12,
2009

TAKE A LOOK AT SAN DIEGO SCHOOL INNOVATION AT MAGNET SCHOOL FAIR

SAN DIEGO -- Parents looking for choices for their child's education and
San Diegans wondering just what their schools are like are invited to
attend San Diego Unified School District's Magnet School Fair, 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Recital Hall in Balboa Park.

The fair is a kickoff event for the annual enrollment options period,
when parents can apply for admission for their child to attend a San
Diego Unified magnet school for the 2010-11 school year. The application
period runs through Feb. 15.

San Diego Unified has 32 magnet schools, each with a specialized program
in addition to a standard academic curricula. Programs allow students to
spend their entire school career in one area, if parents should so
desire.

For example, science, technology and engineering programs are at Johnson
Elementary School in Emerald Hills, Millennial Tech Middle School in
Chollas View and SciTech at the San Diego High Educational Complex in
downtown San Diego and Science Connections and Technology at Kearny High
Complex in Linda Vista. Another example: performing arts, with the Crown
Point Junior Music Academy in Pacific Beach and the Oak Park Music
Conservatory in Oak Park for elementary students; the Creative and
Performing Arts Middle School in Clairemont; and the San Diego School
for Creative and Performing Arts (grades 6-12) in South Bay Terraces.
Language programs include Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and French.

At the fair, students are scheduled to perform in a variety of areas,
ranging from dance to science programs. Representatives from each school
will be on hand.

This year's fair has added significance, as budget constraints may
eliminate the programs for 2010-11. Transportation service was reduced
for 2009-10, cutting the number of students who could participate.

"We invite our parents to visit and see what options are available for
their child," said Bill Kowba, Interim Superintendent. "But just as
important, we invite all of San Diego to this fair, whether or not you
have children. Your taxes fund these programs; however because there is
no local control over a large portion of our revenue, the Board of
Education may be forced to shut down these excellent programs."

The district is facing a budget reduction of $84 million or more for the
2010-11 school year. Magnet programs can be more expensive than standard
school curricula. In addition, San Diego Unified provides bus
transportation for many of the students who attend these programs.

Only six of the programs have independent grant funding which would
spare them from cuts: Barnard Elementary Mandarin Chinese Language
Magnet, Alice Birney Elementary Academy of International Studies Magnet,
Johnson Elementary Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) Magnet, Joyner Elementary MicroSociety Magnet, Millennial Tech
Middle School STEM Magnet and John Muir Magnet School for Global
Citizenship. However, transportation to these programs could be
eliminated.

Kowba noted that San Diego Unified's basic academic programs -- math,
English and science -- are among the best in California, highlighted by
near-top ranking among the large school districts in the state. And,
with the recent study that placed California's academic standards among
the highest in the nation, that means the San Diego Unified is one of
the top school districts in the nation.

"These magnet programs provide different types of education that may be
a better fit for a student's needs than a traditional program," he said.
"We're very proud that we're able to provide diverse educational choices
for all of our parents and students, rather than a one-size-fits-all
approach. However, the budget cuts may force us to shut off these
opportunities for today'students, the next generation of San Diegans."

The fair is free and open to the public. For more information on the
magnet program, go to

http://old.sandi.net/enrollmentoptions/magnet/magnet_front.html
