San Diego Unified 'Chavistas' Honor Cesar Chavez at 13th Annual Las Mañanitas Breakfast

WHAT: The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs will honor community leaders whose work is aligned with the values of late labor leader Cesar Chavez during the annual Las Mañanitas Breakfast. Hundreds of "Chavistas" from 15 San Diego Unified School District campus clubs will lead the community event in advance of Cesar Chavez Day, March 31. This year's honorees are Diane Takvorian, executive director and co-founder of the Environmental Health Coalition, and Josephine S. Talamantez, founder of the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center.

 

WHEN: Friday, March 24, Breakfast at 7 a.m. Program 7:30 to 9 a.m.

 

WHERE: DoubleTree Hotel in Hazard Center, 7450 Hazard Center Dr, San Diego, CA 92108  

 

BACKGROUND: Since 2001, the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs have offered San Diego Unified students meaningful and innovative leadership development opportunities. The clubs are built on the ten values of Cesar Chavez and are designed to engage club members in leadership and community service activities.

Hundreds of Student Art Displays to be Unveiled at San Diego Unified School District Exhibit

Tuesday, March 14, 2023

SAN DIEGO – Works of art from students of all ages spanning UTK through high school will soon be displayed in the hallways at the San Diego Unified School District headquarters. More than 500 paintings, drawings and other creations will be unveiled Wednesday, March 15 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the annual District Art Exhibit. Student artists will be on hand to explain the inspiration behind their work. The exhibit will remain prominently featured throughout the Ed Center until April 6, 2023.

  • What: 2022-23 San Diego Unified UTK-12 Art Exhibit
  • When: Wednesday, March 15, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  
  • Where: Eugene Brucker Education Center: 4100 Normal St., San Diego, CA, 92103
  • Interview opportunities: Student artists, teachers, district leaders

Background: The annual San Diego Unified Art Exhibit celebrates the creative and critical thinking skills being developed by students of all ages from across the district. The various works include paintings, drawings, photographs, and other forms of visual art. With a goal of identifying creations that uniquely captured a student’s voice and vision, art educators throughout the district were tasked with the difficult assignment of submitting the various works to be shown.

For those unable to attend the exhibit in person, a companion online version featuring approximately 350 works is available. The online exhibit includes a mix of creations shown at the Ed Center, as well as additional material displayed exclusively online.
