News Release

San Diego Unified Tops State List of Military-Friendly Schools

January 24, 2022

SAN DIEGO–State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has recognized<https://www.cde.ca.gov/nr/ne/yr22/yr22rel05.asp> 31 schools around California for earning the new Purple Star designation, honoring their support for military-connected students. Of the 31 schools statewide, almost 30 percent are in San Diego Unified School District. Board President Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne praised the schools for their support of students with parents in the Armed Services.

According to the State Superintendent, the newly created California Purple Star School Designation Program recognizes schools that are "committed and equipped to meet the unique needs of military-connected students and their families." Purple Star schools seek to reduce the burdens on military-connected students and their families by providing support, creating transition programs, and offering staff professional development, he explained.

"San Diego Unified has always been proud to serve those who protect our liberty by ensuring their children are well cared for when they are learning," said Dr. Whitehurst-Payne. "We understand their parents are fully focused on their mission to protect our country, and the best way San Diego Unified can support that mission is by giving their children a world-class education."

San Diego Unified designated as Purple Star schools are:

* Cabrillo Elementary School
* Canyon Hills High School
* Dana Middle School
* Dewey Elementary School
* Hage Elementary School
* Jonas Salk Elementary School
* Miller Elementary School
* Montgomery Middle School
* Sessions Elementary School

San Diego is home to one of the largest concentrations of military-connected students in the state. Some 8 percent of all students - close to 8,000 students - have a parent serving in the Armed Forces.

News Release

San Diego Unified Provides Additional Support To Classrooms Due to Statewide Substitute Teacher Shortage and Spread of Omicron Variant

January 14, 2022

SAN DIEGO– San Diego Unified School District has outlined plans to begin moving additional educators into classrooms due to the statewide substitute teacher shortage and the spread of the Omicron variant. The district announced it will invoke Administrative Procedure 7293, adopted in the late 1960s and designed to help schools cope with severe staffing shortages. These new measures are being taken to keep schools open.

"We continue to believe that school is the best place for students to be," the district said in a letter to families. "This has been demonstrated by multiple studies showing students are actually safer in school than in communities where the virus is widespread."

Calling the current situation a severe challenge for all school districts, San Diego Unified cautioned parents, "[W]e want to be transparent about the fact your student(s) will very likely experience one or more of the following over the next few weeks, while COVID-19 is surging and these special measures are in place: Supervision by substitutes or centralized personnel; Class work in a "learning lab," or study hall type of environment; and, Instructional time replaced by self-paced activities."

Among the other measures taken to keep schools open, the district has:

* Called for the cancellation of any non-essential activities that remove teachers and staff from classrooms, such as trainings and professional development.

* Established a rapid return-to-work testing station to help clear employees quickly after positive tests and/or close contacts.

* Cancelled non-essential indoor activities such as field trips, school assemblies and dances.

* Delivered thousands of N95, or similar style masks to schools, and expanded mask enforcement.

* Announced that schools, when appropriate, would move students outdoors during good weather, and into large indoor spaces.

These are temporary measures required by the pandemic, and employing these strategies will allow San Diego Unified to keep classrooms open.

All absences due to illness or mental and emotional stress will be treated as excused at this time, and students out for any of these reasons will be able to make up any missed assignments.

Should all of these measures fail at any given school, the district said it would work with local health and education authorities to declare a "COVID Impact Day" at that school (similar to heat days.)

NEWS RELEASE: Superintendent Search Update

Superintendent Search Events Postponed Due to Rise in COVID-19 Rates

January 7, 2022

Due to rising COVID-19 infection rates in our community, all activities related to the Superintendent search have been paused for the month of January. Public forums planned for the week ahead have been postponed. The State of the District Address, which was scheduled for January 18, will also be postponed.

The district will continue to keep families, employees, and school district stakeholders up to date, and will post information on the district website.

Christopher Rice-Wilson, Chair of Superintendent Search Advisory Committee, issued the following statement:

"As chair of the Superintendent Search Advisory Committee, I support and stand with the Board of Trustees in the decision to postpone the finalists introductions and public events scheduled for Monday, January 10th. Dealing with this current COVID-19 surge should be the number one priority of school and district staff. There is no need to rush this search process and endanger our school community and stakeholders. Everyone's efforts should be focused on getting our district and community safely through yet another surge of this devastating pandemic!"

Please see the letter shared with the full search committee by Chairman Rice-Wilson.

Letter to Superintendent Search Advisory Committee Members:

Dear colleagues:

After experiencing a family outbreak of COVID-19 over the holiday break and consultation with other leaders, I recommended that the Board of Education delay the public portions of the Superintendent search process scheduled for next week. This means we will not hold the meeting with city leaders on Monday, and we will not do school-site visits with the candidates that same day. The Board of Education remains committed to holding these public events at the appropriate time, when we can once again gather together safely.

Because the public input portion of the search process is essential to its success, I have also asked the Board to delay any final decisions on finding a permanent Superintendent until such time as these public events can be held. They share our commitment to transparency and community engagement, and agreed to delay their decision for the time being.

The Board of Education also asked me to share on their behalf their incredible gratitude for your continued commitment to the search process. They recognize the many hours you have all dedicated to help get this critical decision right. I look forward to getting back in touch with you soon to share some thoughts on our next steps. In the meantime, please keep yourselves and your families safe and please feel free to reach out if there is anything you would like to discuss.

In gratitude,

Chairman Rice-Wilson
