WHAT: High school youth summit to empower students to take charge,
develop, design and lead after school programs that connect with the needs
and interests of their peers. Students will be given the training, tools
and resources to return to their school sites to develop a
club/organization or a service learning opportunity.

SCRIPPS RANCH HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATES NEW SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES FACILITY
WHAT: San Diego Unified School District's Scripps Ranch High School is dedicating its new Sustainable Technologies facility tomorrow. The new facility houses the Sustainable Technologies Program, which is a unique College, Career & Technical Education (CCTE) program that encompass four emerging, high-growth industry sectors including building trades and construction, engineering and design, transportation, and power and utilities. Instruction will focus on areas such as green construction, renewable energy and utilities, alternative fuels, clean transportation, and innovative engineering and design.
WHEN: Tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 29), 4-5 p. m. (rain or shine)
WHERE: Scripps Ranch High School, 10410 Treena Street, San Diego, CA 92131 (The facility site is located on the west side of Treena Street, directly across from the school office.)

BACKGROUND: The Sustainable Technologies facility, a CCTE project funded by California Proposition 1D and local Proposition S bond funds, houses an innovative program that CCTE and Scripps Ranch High School are developing to focus on renewable technologies. This facility represents an investment of approximately $7 million into Scripps Ranch High School and the Scripps Ranch community.
On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S, so that San Diego Unified School District could repair, renovate and revitalize its neighborhood schools.

DISTRICT TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL PARENT INVOLVEMENT DAY
NOVEMBER 15
WHAT: Schools and departments across the district are
celebrating the invaluable role that parents/guardians play in supporting
student learning and public education. Four events for your consideration
include: “Come to School with Your Student Day” at Serra High School; Parents
sharing how their college experiences impacted their career choices with sixth
graders at Marston Middle School; Parents/students eating lunch together at
Kumeyaay Elementary; and the Community Resource Fair/Parent workshops at
Ballard Parent Center.
WHEN/WHERE: Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012
7:10 – 7:45 a.m.: Serra High School, 5156 Santo Rd.
(92124). Media parking is available in the front parking lot. (See attached map
for room location)
10:10 – 11:45 a.m.: Kumeyaay Elementary School, 6475
Antigua Blvd. (92124). Media parking is available in the main lot off Antigua
Blvd.
11:25 a.m. – 12 Noon: Marston Middle School, 3799
Clairemont Dr. (92117). Media parking is available on the north side of campus
off Clairemont Dr.

DETAILS:
SERRA HIGH
On “Come to School with Your Student Day," parents may
shadow their student for the day or just a few classes to get a better
understanding of what their child experiences each day. For some, it’s also a
chance to relive high school. Serra High is also hosting a workshop for parents
on the district’s A-G requirements from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. This is the fourth
consecutive year the school has hosted this event. Please check-in at the
office before heading to room 231.
PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS:
Parents and students will be available for interviews in
the Family Resource Center, room 231 from 7:10
to 7:45 a.m., along with Serra High's school site operations specialist
and event coordinator Jeff Thomas. School starts at 7:30 a.m. Cameras will be
allowed to follow parents/students into class from 7:30 to 7:45 a.m. Please
check-in at the office before heading to the lunch court.
KUMEYAAY ELEMENTARY
Parents are invited to eat lunch with their student.
Kindergarten lunch (10:10 - 10:30 a.m.), Grades 1-2 lunch (10:45 - 11:05 a.m.),
Grades 3-5 lunch (11:25 - 11:45 a.m.).
PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS:
More parents are expected between 10:10 a.m. and 11:05
a.m. for lunch with the younger students.
MARSTON MIDDLE
In keeping with the school’s focus on creating a
college-going culture, parents have been invited to come and speak with classes
throughout the day about the role that their college experience played in their
career choices. About 20 total speakers will be visiting throughout the day.
PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS:
Starting at 11:25 a.m., three speakers --a nurse, the
manager of a locksmith company, and an IT specialist are scheduled to address
Summer Catarius’s sixth graders (room 316). All students in this classroom are
cleared for media interviews. San Diego Unified Council of PTAs President
Barbara Flannery will also be available for interviews, as well as Principal
Elizabeth Cook. Please check-in at the office for an escort to room 316.
COMMUNITY RESOURCE FAIR/PARENT WORKSHOPS AT BALLARD
PARENT CENTER San Diego Unified School District, SDUSD School Psychology Department
and the Ballard Parent Center are hosting a Parent/Community Resource Fair and
parent workshops at Ballard Center in honor of School Psychology Awareness
Week, and as a tribute to Parent Involvement Day. Workshops include “Reading with Your Kids”
and “Positive Behavior Strategies.”

Ballard Parent Center: Bea Fernandez, parent outreach
program manager and National Parent Involvement Day event coordinator, school
psychologists, and parents will be available for media interviews from 4 - 5
p.m.
BACKGROUND:
National Parent Involvement Day is a joint effort between San Diego
Unified School District and the San Diego Unified Council of PTAs to recognize
parents/guardians and the invaluable role they play in supporting a child’s learning
at home and at school. Research indicates that when parents are strategically
involved in children's learning, student achievement significantly improves and
schools are more effective.
To recognize the day, schools were encouraged to host
celebrations that honor parents/guardians and facilitate further parent
engagement. National Parent Involvement Day was started 18 years ago by Project
Appleseed.

12 -- JROTC Drill Competition and 26th Annual Veteran¹s Day Parade, 8

a drill competition, then pay tribute to veterans by marching in the
