NEWS RELEASE -- Summer Commencement Brings Class of ¹09 to End

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, July 28, 2009

Summer Commencement Brings Class of ¹09 to End

Students from Throughout District Participate in Ceremony

SAN DIEGO The Summer Commencement Ceremony, for high school seniors who
hadn¹t fulfilled graduation requirements in time for June ceremonies with
their high school class, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., Friday, July 31, at
Lincoln High School, 4777 Imperial Avenue (92113).

³We¹re celebrating these students, who have in many cases overcome a great
deal of adversity to receive their high school diploma,² said Superintendent
Terry Grier. ³They know this is their last chance to put on a cap and gown
and walk as a member of the class of 2009.²

Nearly 200 students from all of the district¹s 18 high school campuses will
be participating. Many friends and family members will be in attendance.
Each high school¹s principal or a representative will read the student¹s
name, as in the traditional ceremony.

Seniors participating are those who may not have passed the California High
School Exit Exam in time for June graduation, or needed summer school to
pick up credits needed to graduate.

Supt. Grier will be speaking to the students just before the traditional
march to receive their hard-earned diplomas. This is the fourth year that
the district has held the special summer ceremony. In previous years,
students would eventually receive a diploma but wouldn¹t be able to
participate in a graduation ceremony.

High school graduation requirements include 44 semester credits, a 2.0 or
higher grade point average, science and math course requirements, completing
a senior portfolio and passing the exit exam.

The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. at Lincoln High. Family and friends are
invited to attend; no tickets are required.

MEDIA ADVISORY -- News Conference with Federal, State, Local Officials Show Stimulus Funds Clean Up Buses

Media Advisory from the San Diego Unified School District, July 21, 2009

STIMULUS GRANTS HELP TO NEARLY COMPLETE CLEANUP OF DIESEL SCHOOL BUSES

WHAT: Clean Diesel Bus Grant News Conference

WHEN: 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009

WHERE: San Diego Unified Transportation Center, 4710 Cardin St. (92111).

WHAT: State and federal officials will be on hand to talk about San Diego Unified's fleet of clean diesel buses, and grants to increase their number and how it helps make neighborhoods cleaner. They'll also be presenting funds, from the federal stimulus, that have been used to clean up buses. A "hankie test" will show the clean emissions from the new technology. Students who are in the district's automotive technology program will also be on hand to talk about their career options after receiving training in diesel engine operations.

BACKGROUND: Starting with the first bus retrofit to clean particulates in 1999, San Diego Unified is now fewer than 10 buses away from having all equipment installed on its 500+ bus fleet, making it the cleanest in the nation. Both the latest buses to be cleaned up and the first from 1999 will be on display.

SPEAKERS: Representatives from USEPA, Cal EPA, Air Pollution Control District and San Diego Unified will be on hand. Students who have graduated from and are currently in San Diego Unified's automotive technology classes will also be available to talk about their futures in the field of diesel technology. SDUSD Board President Shelia Jackson and Superintendent Terry Grier will be on hand.

VISUALS: School buses, the newest clean buses and the 1999, first clean bus in the nation. "Hankie test" -- we'll fire up the bus with the latest technology to show how few particulates are discharged. Lots of bright, yellow school buses.
