PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Hoover High School, built in the 1930s, is currently undergoing a substantial renovation. The renovation includes design and construction of a new theater and a three-story classroom building.

Once a community landmark, the Spanish-style tower once visible from El Cajon Boulevard was taken down in 1976 due to seismic safety standards. It was well known in the community for the “Tower Day Ceremony,” a tradition in which seniors climbed to the top of the tower. The ceremony ended when the tower came down.

Forty-three years later, San Diego Unified brought back the iconic tower to the City Heights community. The design of the new building is inspired by Spanish-style architecture and combines an old-fashioned schoolhouse concept with an energy-efficient modern design. The new tower topped out in January 2019.

One month after San Diego Unified celebrated its new tower, the district is now preparing to top out the second and final new building on this project: the theater.

The first floor of the new three-story building is designed to accommodate school administrative staff, counselors, and support staff. The second and third floors provide ten classrooms each. The new building replaces buildings 100 (Counseling), 1700 (Administration), as well as 20 outdated modular classrooms from the campus annex area.

The new theater building provides an approximately 500-seat theater, theater support space, and instructional space.

The project also includes reconfiguration of the main parking lot, courtyard improvements, and a student drop-off area.

BACKGROUND:

San Diego Unified’s capital projects are funded by San Diego Unified School District’s Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Montgomery Middle STEAM Magnet School Celebrates Unveiling of Student-Designed Linda Vista Banners

WHAT:  The Montgomery Middle STEAM Magnet School and San Diego Unified School District, together with community partners Linda Vista Town Council and the University of San Diego, will celebrate the unveiling of student-designed banners along Linda Vista Road and Ulric Street at John Baca Park in Linda Vista. The banners represent how students are establishing ownership of their community as they help promote Linda Vista as distinctive San Diego neighborhood that values education.

Media and all members of the Linda Vista community are invited to the official themed celebration “We Are Linda Vista,” where over 150 students will join teachers, parents, and community leaders including Councilmember Scott Sherman.

WHEN:  Friday, March 1, 2019, 10 a.m.

WHERE:  Montgomery Middle School Auditorium, 2470 Ulric St., San Diego, 92111

Background:  This day will mark the culmination of an eighth-grade design-based unit with the theme “We Are Linda Vista,” led by Montgomery teacher Aimee Welshans.

Since the fall, students have been focused on the community of Linda Vista and their role in it. While Montgomery students were thinking critically about their community, USD and the LVTC were exploring options for the next series of banners along Linda Vista Road that would authentically represent Linda Vista.

“Because of our historical partnerships in Linda Vista, connections were made between the eighth-grade students and USD’s publications department and university designer,” said Malia Pfister, senior advisor in USD's Office of Community and Government Relations and sponsor of the banners. She added, “What better way to show off Linda Vista than through the lens of our best asset — our youth.”

After launching the collaboration in November, Montgomery students worked in teams to create a visual representation of Linda Vista for the banners. Prototypes were produced and the teams pitched their designs at an exhibition in December 2018 to USD staff, the Linda Vista Town Council, Montgomery faculty, staff and families as well as students from neighboring elementary schools.

“Our students were able to use skills gained in other classes in order to pitch the banner to a real-life client and see it come to fruition,” said Welshans. “This real-world experience is exactly what we want for our students here at Montgomery STEAM Magnet.”

John Nielsen, LVTC president, added, “It’s been wonderful to see a project that brings community members and students together to create art representing Linda Vista as a whole.”

The banners will be viewable to the public along Linda Vista Road and Ulric Street.

Please confirm attendance by responding to this email or calling 619-725-5578.
