Giant Puppets Take to the Streets of City Heights for 4th Annual
Celebration

At 9:30 am Tuesday, July 14, 2009, San Diego Guild of Puppetry lead
artist, Felix Diaz's whistle will blow. Drum groups from Monroe Clark
Middle School and Hoover High will set the beat, and 450 Monroe Clark
Middle School 6th graders will march to Rosa Parks Elementary School,
carrying giant puppets and banners, for the 4th annual, "Welcome to
Middle School" parade. Upon reaching Rosa Parks Elementary, the middle
schoolers will be joined by Rosa Parks' graduating 5th graders bearing
their own dragon masks. After parading before the K-5 student body, the
procession, now nearly 700 strong, will march together back to Monroe
Clark, marking, in a larger than life celebration, the elementary
schoolers' passage into middle school.

Those watching this City Heights community parade will see students'
artistic interpretations of the cultural themes explored in the social
studies curriculum. African effigy figures from last year's parade will
be joined by giant snakes, inspired by the mythic Quetzalcoatl, the
Mesoamerican plumed serpent god. This year a host of Southeast Asian
dragons in both mask and giant form will be added to the celebration.
Funding for the original parade in 2005 came from an Arts and Culture
Community Impact grant from The San Diego Foundation, with additional
and continuing funding every year from A-I-S grants from the California
Arts Council, a state agency, the NEA, a federal agency, the City of San
Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, and the Dr. Seuss Foundation.
This support has kept the parade going and growing into an annual event
that celebrates student transition to middle school, while spotlighting
cultures, collaborative effort and community.

In these schools and in others throughout the city, the San Diego Guild
of Puppetry is hard at work to make giant puppet pageantry an important
element in the San Diego community at large. Multi-community giant
puppet parades have been held at the Theatre of the World Festival at
San Diego State University for the past three years. The New Children's
Museum opened last year with a "Children's Giant Puppet Parade" created
by the Guild, and smaller parades are held at varying locations around
the county, often including celebrations of Dia de los Muertos. Lynne
Jennings, Guild Board Chair explains: "Giant puppetry, by its very size,
inspires awe. It builds stronger communities, as individuals become part
of a committed team effort. It engenders the realization that working
together, people can effect powerful and positive change. It invites
participants and spectators of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds to
join hands in celebration!"

Everyone is invited to watch the City Heights parade at 9:30 on July 14
with excellent viewing at the Monroe Clark field, the Rosa Parks
playground or along the 45th Street parade route. The parade will start
at the Monroe Clark Middle School field, go east on Myrtle and then
north on 45th to Rosa Parks. After circling the elementary school
playground, students will retrace their steps back to the middle school.

San Diego Padres get into the game of reading on June 30
NEA's Read Across America encourages local students to celebrate summer
reading

SAN DIEGO-Showing kids that reading can be just as much fun as a day at
the ballpark, San Diego Padres players Edgar Gonzalez and Kevin
Kouzmanoff will trade their baseball caps for reading hats to encourage
hundreds of schoolchildren to read over the lazy, hazy, crazy days of
summer.

The players will read to the children, while stylishly sporting the red
and white stovepipe hat worn by the Cat in the Hat, the official mascot
of NEA's Read Across America literacy program. Students from Tierrasanta
Elementary in San Diego and Rich and Rogers Elementary in Chula Vista
will take part in the event at PETCO Park on Tuesday, June 30, at 11:30
a.m. The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1 and Thing 2 will also join the fun!

Across San Diego at 36 participating libraries, bilingual readings in
Spanish as well as several Asian languages also will be on the reading
menu to spark some summertime reading inspiration.

system will be hosting read-ins throughout the San Diego area. For a
complete list of participating libraries, visit www.nea.org/readacross.

Enter through the East Village Gate at 10th Avenue and K Street

BACKGROUND
NEA's Read Across America encourages summer reading to help tackle
student achievement gaps that grow exponentially during the summer
months, especially among minority and economically disadvantaged
students. The literacy program encourages youngsters to develop a
healthy appetite of books by making reading fun.

The baseball-themed summer read-ins provide a preview to one of the
largest conventions to arrive in San Diego in recent years. Nearly
10,000 delegates from across the country will be in town July 1-July 6
for NEA's Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly...bringing an
estimated $35 million to the local economy.

**Special guests subject to change depending on availability.**

Hate Crimes Coalition Gives 2009 Unity in Action Award
To University City High and Serra High Schools

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition's (SDRHCC) has
given two first place awards in its annual Unity in Action contest. The
winners are University City High's Power of One program and Serra High's
ELEVATED Student Relations Committee.

The SDRHCC's Unity in Action contest was developed as a way to recognize
programs in our schools that promote unity, diversity and/or tolerance.
The Coalition found that there are many excellent programs in San Diego
County.

"On behalf of the San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition, we are
extremely impressed with the two local high school programs from
University City High and Serra High, which are co-winners of our Unity
in Action Contest for 2009," said Deputy District Attorney Oscar Garcia,
who is the Chairman of the SDRHCC.

"Both of these programs, University City's The Power of One and Serra's
Elevated Students Relations Committee clearly embrace the mission of the
Hate Crimes Coalition, which is to promote the appreciation of diversity
and the prevention of bias motivated behavior. It is certainly
refreshing to find our youth committing themselves in such a positive
manner for the betterment of our community. We are proud to honor them
with this award," Garcia added.

University City High's Power of One is a program within a class, which
has a goal of personal responsibility through diverse teamwork and
community role models, according to its contest entry form.

"The Power of One is an ordinary psychology class doing extraordinary
things," its teacher Lauriann Stanley said. "The curriculum is modeled
on a University Course entitled Happiness 101. The basic premise is that
students are unhappy today because they feel they can not make a
difference in their world. This course gives to them the opportunity to
daily do something for others. After in-depth psychological studies, the
course requirements include weekly volunteer projects, random acts of
kindness, letters of appreciation, cultural plunges, guest speakers and
intensive group discussions."

"It is such a special honor for the students who rarely get recognized
in a celebratory and positive way for the efforts they invest in making
the world a better place," added Ms. Stanley, the teacher who teaches
the Power of One. "These students have worked for months with each other
on volunteer projects and making the garden such a special place. Today
they celebrate! "

Serra High's ELEVATED Student Relations Committee is an all-inclusive
group with the main goal of unifying the diverse groups on the school's
campus, according to its entry form.

"ELEVATED is about breaking down barriers and creating unity," according
to the program's advisor Krissie McClain. "Two of the topics they chose
to work on this year were racial segregation and homophobia. The goal is
to start out small-scale on Serra High's campus and further reach out to
other schools, families, and the community."

"Receiving the Unity in Action Award this year was more than ELEVATED
could've asked for. ELEVATED students, advisors, and even the school
staff were very proud to hear about this award," McClain added. "Not
only being recognized for their hard work, but also giving the students
more opportunity to grow within their own lives, as well as the growing
potential to reach out to others, is what keeps them going. We have seen
graduates from Serra High move onto college and use their leadership
skills to play a role in similar groups. Our hope is to gain
sustainability and expand out with this group."

The San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition was formed eleven years ago
to unite law enforcement agencies with community-based organizations to
tackle issues presented by hate crimes in our community. Members of the
Coalition include representatives from all law enforcement agencies in
the county and members of many diverse community-based organizations.

NEWS RELEASE -- Board Continues Budget Deliberations Tuesday, June 23

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, June 18, 2009

Board Continues Budget Deliberations Tuesday, June 23

In order to continue refining budget projections for the 2010-11 school year, the San Diego Unified's Board of Education decided at a special meeting to have further discussion at the Tuesday, June 23, meeting.

At the special Thursday meeting, the Board discussed possible budget cuts for the 2010-11 school year, which must be submitted with the upcoming 2009-10 budget to the County Office of Education by July 1. The spending plan for 2009-10 was unchanged at Thursday's meeting.

Estimates are currently that the State of California will reduce San Diego Unified's funding by nearly $98 million for the 2010-11 school year. The Board discussed a number of funding options for future years, including a parcel tax, which would have to be approved by San Diego voters.

The meeting Tuesday is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Auditorium, Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St. The meeting is open to the public and will be streamed live on the web. For more information on the meeting, go to www.sandi.net/indices/board.htm

NEWS RELEASE -- San Diego Unified's Board Continues Budget Deliberations

BOARD TO CONTINUE BUDGET DELIBERATIONS

In order to continue to refine not only the 2009-10 school year budget but projections for the 2010-11 spending plan as required by the state, San Diego Unified's Board of Education received an updated report from the district Finance Department that showed the 2009/2010 can be balanced with the budget reductions adopted earlier this month (see http://sdusd-newsfeed.blogspot.com/2009/06/san-diegos-school-board-closes-budget.html). The Board plans to consider the proposed budget for final adoption on June 23.

Board members have until June 30 to submit a balanced budget to the County Office of Education. The District is also required to include projections for balanced budgets in 2010-11 and 2011-12. District staff presented projections that show a deficit of $77.5 million in 2010-11 that will need to be addressed with additional budget reductions. Board members asked staff to further refine their projections and alternatives for balancing the budget projections for the 2010-11 budget year as part of the staff presentation planned for the June 23 meeting.

Dates for additional special meetings have not yet been set, but notices of the meeting will be posted at http://www.sandi.net/indices/board.htm
