The ceremony highlights the district’s ongoing commitment and education plan to promote safe and affirming school spaces for LGBTQIA+ students, families, and educators. Students will share their thoughts on what the flag raising ceremony means to them.

SPEAKERS AVAILABLE: Student members of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance Support Group

Ebonee Weathers, LGBTQIA+ Program Manager, San Diego Unified

WHEN: Friday, June 28, at 10 a.m.

BackgroundSan Diego Unified is proud to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, plus (LGBTQIA+) students, families and educators. Here are some of the ways the second-largest school district in California celebrates Pride Month and supports the LGBTQIA+ community:

July 9:  Board of Education to vote on two resolutions: Resolution in support of Assembly Bill 493 and Resolution in support of Recognizing June 2020 as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month for All Schools and Students in San Diego Unified.

July 10: Superintendent Marten to testify in Sacramento in support of Assembly Bill 493 requiring, among other things, that each school operated by a school district or county office of education and each charter school to provide online training at least once every two years to teachers of students in grades 7 to 12, inclusive, and to all other certificated employees at that school, on school site.

July 13: San Diego LGBT Pride Parade - “Unified in Pride” Contingent. The annual San Diego Pride Parade is the largest single-day civic event in the region and is among the largest Prides in the United States, attracting more than 250,000 people. San Diego Unified’s presence in the parade serves as an opportunity to make visible its commitment to promoting safe and affirming schools for students, families, and educators that focuses on intersectional diversity, acceptance, and unconditional support for our LGBTQIA+ students, families, and educators.

San Diego Unified is committed to equal opportunity for all students in admission and access to the district's educational programs, guidance and counseling programs, athletic programs, testing procedures, and other activities, and that all programs and activities be free from discrimination, including harassment, with respect to a student's actual or perceived sex, gender, ethnic group identification, race, national origin, religion, color, physical or mental disability, age, or sexual orientation.

Please confirm attendance in advance.

NEWS RELEASE San Diego Unified School District

NEWS RELEASE
 Immediate Release

San Diego Unified Formally Adopts 2019-20 Budget: More Money for Teacher Salaries, Student Wellness, Safety and Enrichment Programs

SAN DIEGO (June 25, 2019) – The San Diego Unified School District Board of Trustees formally adopted the 2019-20 budget proposal and funding priorities on Tuesday. The $1.3 billion budget reflects strategies developed with stakeholders and partners for the district's Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). The budget plan defines how the district will prioritize funding in keeping with guiding principles outlined in the LCAP.

The district's budget reflects programs that show a positive impact on student achievement, and focuses funding toward student wellness and safety. The budget includes a 3.7 percent salary increase for San Diego Unified teachers under a tentative contract agreement with the San Diego Education Association. The pay raise would push the top salary for teachers to above the $100,000 level for the first time. The contract agreement recognizes the high cost of living in the San Diego region, as well as the cost-of-living adjustment school districts could receive under the first budget from Gov. Gavin Newsom.

"This pay increase will allow students to continue receiving the high-quality instruction our professional educators provide every day. At the same time, it will make it easier for our teachers to be able to live in the communities they serve, surrounded by the students they support," said Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Even as districts across the state face increased budget pressure, I am proud of the fact that San Diego Unified has been able to maintain a collaborative relationship with those representing our professional educators, administrators, and support staff."

The district seeks to direct as much money possible to classroom enrichment programs, and visual and performing arts programs, while living within budgetary means as defined in its three-year budget plan. The budget also includes additional  special education teachers in order to maintain the 20:1 student- to-teacher ratio, along with enhanced counseling resources at schools with concentrated services geared toward student wellness and mental health. Additionally, there are no staff lay-offs, outside usual operating staff turn-around. Employee benefits will remain fully maintained. The district's 2019-20 budget must be submitted to the County Office of Education by July 1, 2019.

Funding priorities for the 2019-20 budget include:

● Visual and Performing Arts

● Safety

● Mental Health

● Safe, Collaborative and Inclusive Environments

● Vision 2020

● Professional Development

● K-3 Literacy

● Elementary Enrichment

● Language Immersion Programs

● Student and Staff Wellness

● High Quality Preschools

MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified Leads Effort to Fight Summer Hunger

[cid:41014C6E-BF1C-4F8A-A50C-A09B394FB4CE]

MEDIA ADVISORY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

San Diego Unified Leads Effort to Fight Summer Hunger

This summer, more than 300,000 meals and snacks will be served to San Diego children at 57 sites throughout the city – all part of the Summer Fun Café, a federally funded meal program that provides meals to children ages 18 and younger when school is not in session.

More than 70,000 children in San Diego Unified School District qualify for free or reduced-price meals during the school year. When school ends for the summer, these children lose access to school meals, often leading to unhealthy eating, fatigue, weight gain and learning loss. This leaves many children unprepared to return to school in the fall.

The Summer Fun Café, administered by San Diego Unified Food and Nutrition Services, works to ensure these children have continued access to nutritious meals. The program provides meals that meet federal nutrition guidelines at no cost to all children 18 years old and younger at sites in areas with significant concentrations of low-income children.

To help raise awareness about this important program, San Diego Unified will host a kickoff barbecue event featuring a large community resource fair, fitness camp, circus performance, prize giveaway, and a free barbecue lunch for all children 18 years old and younger. Parents and guardians can also eat for free at the barbecue thanks to funding from sponsors Mission Federal Credit Union and San Diego Honda Dealers.
