MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified schedules press conference to announce public meetings in advance of Healthy Start Time launch

WHAT:  Press conference to announce informational public meetings, with John Lee Evans, Board of Education Vice President; Chuck Podhorsky, La Jolla High School Principal; and Dr. Howard Taras, District Physician

District officials will be present at the Healthy Start Cluster Engagement meetings to answer questions. The meetings will be held on various dates and at different locations through the month of May.

Background:  San Diego Unified is excited to announce the next steps in the implementation of Healthy Start Times, an important initiative that promotes health, safety, and emotional well-being of our students through research-based practices.

Three district campuses will launch an early implementation of the Healthy Start Times initiative in the 2019-20 academic year: La Jolla High School, the School of Creative and Performing Arts, and Muirlands Middle School.

The April forum will feature San Diego Unified’s innovative food and nutrition programs, including the Love Food Not Waste collaboration with local food banks and Farm-to-School partnerships with organic farms to supply school cafeterias with fresh, locally grown produce. Bring your questions and your appetite and we’ll supply the snacks!

San Diego Unified MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES Week of April 22-26

Hello,
Below is the list of this week's media coverage opportunities.
You are invited to cover or attend any of the following upcoming events on the campuses of the San Diego Unified School District.

As ALWAYS, please confirm your coverage prior to attending event.
Thank you.
San Diego Unified Communications Dept.

Tuesday 4/23 – 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. – Lincoln High School Community Exhibition
Lincoln High School is opening up their campus for their Spring Community Walk Through. Members of the community are invited on campus, to get an inside look at the learning culture inside of Lincoln. Students will share data about the school, share a mini documentary produced, shot and staring the students of Lincoln High school, then finally invite guests to take self-guided tours of the campus. (8AM-12PM in the Innovation Center room 112)

Humans of Lincoln Project Screening (9:30-1030 in Theatre)
The "Humans of Lincoln" mission is to uncover and discover stories, from all stakeholders in the Lincoln community to show resilience and strength unique to this community of scholars. Humans of Lincoln is inspired by the "Humans of New York" blog. The goal is for students to compile 100 stories from Lincoln community stakeholders. Lauren Wilensky, teaching 11th grade American Literature at Lincoln High School, saw a need to get students talking to one another to create change in the culture and climate. Together with colleague, Cassandra Gately and resource teachers JahB Prescott and Hiedi Hall, 11th grade students are discovering their voice by speaking with different audiences and in doing so are identifying the strengths and significant stories within their community and creating new conversations. Here at Lincoln we are embracing both empathy and the art of actively listening to develop a significant story that will bridge our differences. By teaching 11th graders interview skills, how to listen to others and constructing a narrative about others, students are empowered to move into critical conversations about connections and develop empathy for their peers and neighbors.
Here is a sample of some of the student stories: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vRfE0mN4jPiXkwWUJ7y0kuQkJATlb6WQ7XWLdV_j1CpE0wdVwXCf7hoGFlfTMOKVjprAAofmfo9UfVQ/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000

Thursday 4/18 – 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. – Clay Elementary School 2nd Annual Leadership Day
Three years ago, Clay Elementary School received a grant from the Panda Foundation. Through that grant, Clay Elementary was able to implement The Leader in Me Program. The program teaches students to follow the 7 habits of happy kids. These habits were adapted from Steven Covey's 7 habits of highly effective people. The event will be 100% student led. Additionally, once a year, Clay holds a Leadership Day, where parents, community members, prospective parents, and colleagues are invited to join students teach guests about the 7 habits. After enjoying coffee and refreshments, students will lead guests through an overview of the 7 habits. Student speakers will highlight how the 7 habits have helped them in school and/or in their personal life. In addition, various students will perform and lead guests through a campus tour, including visits to the school garden and several classrooms.
