La Jolla High School Celebrates 100 Years

 

Friday, Sept. 30, 2022

SAN DIEGO – La Jolla High School, the second-oldest high school in San Diego Unified School District, is celebrating a century of educational excellence.

The school will celebrate its 100th anniversary Friday with a special homecoming football game, centennial halftime parade, and alumni events. Current students, future La Jolla Vikings, alumni, families, teachers and school staff joined the festivities to share in the legacy of La Jolla High.

“This is an exciting time for our entire school community,” said Dr. Chuck Podhorsky, principal of La Jolla High. “We have such great support from our alumni, our school foundation, and our families. Our students can really feel how special it is to be a part of the long history of success at La Jolla High.”

To honor this momentous occasion, City Councilmember Joe LaCava presented a proclamation declaring Oct. 1, 2022 “La Jolla High School 100th Anniversary Day” in the City of San Diego. Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson and Board Trustee Dr. Mike McQuary joined Principal Podhorsky to receive the proclamation on behalf of the school and district.

The proclamation reads in part, “The growth of the school can be attributed to the school’s leadership, thousands of alumni, the commitment and passion of the teachers and staff, and its ability to adapt to the changing needs of our youths. Thanks to the participation of supportive and involved parents and community members, La Jolla High School continues to thrive, providing quality enrichment and opportunity to its students now and well into the future.”

 

La Jolla High prides itself on providing a positive climate conducive to learning for its students, and has been cited as one of the top high schools in the nation. The school is also recognized as a California Distinguished School, and as an Achievement via Individual Determination (AVID) School of Distinction. In addition, La Jolla High  was the first public high school west of the Mississippi to earn a chapter in the Cum Laude Society.

 

“We are very proud of La Jolla High, the quality education provided to our students who attend school there, and the impressive network of support from the community,” McQuary said. “La Jolla High is sure to continue growing and thriving over the next 100 years.”

 

Originally built in 1922 on 5.6 acres of land with just 11 students in its first graduating class, the campus now occupies 14.4 acres and serves more than 1,300 students from in and around the La Jolla community. Over the years, the school has grown in numbers, beautified its grounds, and built numerous additions such as the Parker Auditorium, the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex, as well as the school’s spectacular gym.

 

Recently, La Jolla High completed its Whole Site Modernization project that includes a secure campus entryway featuring new gates and fencing that were designed to be both functional and decorative, new classroom science labs to enhance the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning, renovated walkways, and a remodeled school cafe.

BACKGROUND:

The Stockton Joint-Use Field project includes a new synthetic turf soccer field with an asphalt track, basketball courts, hardcourts with striping and a playground.

 

The project also features newly planted trees, concrete benches on the sideline of the field, and a ball stop fence between the field and play area.

 

The field is secured with perimeter fencing and several access gates. One gate allows public access to the field through the recreation center, while the other gates allow student access to the field from the campus.

 

As part of the Play All Day partnership between San Diego Unified and the City of San Diego, the joint-use field is accessible to the community as a local park after school hours and during school breaks.

 

San Diego Unified's capital projects are funded by San Diego Unified's Propositions S, Z and Measure YY, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools.

 

Named after United States Navy commodore Robert Field Stockton, Stockton is culturally diverse, with unique small commercial centers and family-owned businesses. The neighborhood is bordered by Golden Hill to the north, Mountain View and Mt. Hope to the east, Grant Hill to the west, and Logan Heights to the south.

San Diego Unified Leaders Join Pacific Beach Middle School Students, Staff in Celebrating Newly Completed Classroom Facility

SAN DIEGO -  One of Pacific Beach’s most celebrated schools has marked a major milestone. 

 

On Friday, Pacific Beach Middle School leaders welcomed District C Board of Education Trustee Dr. Mike McQuary, students, and two generations of alumni to celebrate a recently completed modern classroom facility. 

 

Located at the corner of Ingraham and Diamond Streets, the two-story building features collaborative workspaces, 26 classrooms with state-of-the-art technology and innovative furniture. Outside, a new courtyard with lunch tables, activities and umbrellas dramatically improves outdoor gathering areas. 

 

“It’s night and day from our old facility,” said Kimberly Meng, principal of Pacific Beach Middle. “Our teachers and students now have the classrooms and workspaces that will reflect their hard work and inspire them to succeed.” 

 

As part of the Whole Site Modernization project, the two-story classroom facility replaced two aging buildings, and created a new and safer entrance to the campus from Felspar Street. The project follows a subsequent “Synthetic Turf Athletic Field and Parking Lot” project that replaced a decomposed granite field with a synthetic turf athletic field and new parking lot with a bike rack, pick-up and drop-off area, light poles, landscaping, and ornamental permeable pavers. Secure perimeter fencing has also been also installed around the campus. 

 

“It’s surreal to be here and see these projects all completed,” said Dr. Mike McQuary, Board of Education Trustee for San Diego Unified. “This is a testament to the many meetings Principal Meng and former principal Julie Martel and I had with the community. Our hard work has paid off, Pacific Beach Middle has been transformed.” 

 

A community staple for 91 years and counting, Pacific Beach Middle first opened its doors in 1931 as a junior high school in North Pacific Beach. It stayed at its Tourmaline Street location for 19 years before moving to its current Ingraham Street location in 1950. Pacific Beach Elementary School currently sits at the former junior high site. In 1984, Pacific Beach Junior High transitioned to Pacific Beach Middle School. 

 

“It’s fascinating to see how PBMS has changed over the years,” said Amy Griffiths, a 1986 alumni of PBMS. “My mom went here, I went here, and now my son goes here. We all have different experiences in different facilities over the years - it’s really special.” 

 

In 2007, Pacific Beach Middle became an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. With this prestigious designation, the campus  offers Mandarin Chinese language classes and one-of-a-kind partnerships with the University of Zurich in Switzerland and the University of San Diego. 

 

Now 15 years into serving as an IB school,Pacific Beach Middle  has won multiple awards, including three “IB Educator of the Year” awards for California, one “IB Student of the Year” award, and a “Spotlight School” title by the California IB Association. 

 

As an IB School, Pacific Beach Middle joins 10 other IB schools in five clusters to develop internationally minded people. Through the IB program, students learn how to recognize their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet to create a better and more peaceful world. 

 

“Better understanding of one another’s cultures leads to equity and inclusiveness, which are two of our biggest priorities at San Diego Unified,” said Superintendent Jackson. “Through understanding and learning, we can build a better tomorrow.”  

 

In addition to its academically rigorous curriculum, Pacific Beach Middle offers students enrichment opportunities, including award-winning athletics, jazz, video production, choir, sportfishing and a variety of other lunch and after-school activities.

 

Funding for these recent projects is made available through Propositions S & Z, and Measure YY, which are local school bond measures approved by San Diego voters to improve San Diego Unified schools. Read more about the project at http://fpcprojects.sandi.net.
