NEWS RELEASE -- School Choice Fair Features Education Options

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, Jan. 20, 2011

SCHOOL CHOICE FAIR FEATURES EDUCATION OPTIONS

San Diego Unified Event Highlights All Kindergarten-12th Grade Schools

SAN DIEGO Back by popular demand, the Third Annual San Diego Unified
School Choice Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30,
at the Balboa Park Recital Hall.

The free event will highlight schools and student performances from
throughout the San Diego Unified School District. Families across the county
can learn first-hand about the many educational options available to
students, including those parents do not live within the district¹s
attendance boundaries.

Information about district-run schools, including neighborhood, magnet and
International Baccalaureate, as well as other innovative programs, will be
under one roof. Representatives from the enrollment office will be available
to answer school choice application questions.

A variety of activities are scheduled. For example, performing arts students
will be on stage dancing and bands will play, while other student show off
their science projects and other materials they created while learning.
School principals and other staff will be available to answer questions
about their curriculum, students and family services.

The San Diego Unified School District is proud to offer a variety of
enrollment choices to students and parents. Families may choose the
convenience of attending their neighborhood school or explore the exciting
programs available to students who reside within district boundaries and
wish to attend a another campus.

· Magnet Programs: Magnet schools provide in-depth, innovative, learning
opportunities for students while meeting rigorous California state
curriculum standards. Some of the opportunities include science, technology,
engineering, math, creative and performing arts, International Baccalaureate
Studies, MicroSociety, Paideia, and language immersion.

· Voluntary Enrollment Exchange Program (VEEP): Students may attend
schools other than their resident schools. VEEP is open to all students
residing within a specific boundary of a school that has an approved VEEP
pattern. Transportation is offered within the VEEP patterns. Transportation
is limited and may be reduced when budgetary decisions are finished.

· Program Improvement School Choice: The federal "No Child Left Behind
Act" (NCLB) provides up to two school options for students attending a
Program Improvement (P.I.) school.

· School Choice/Open Enrollment Act: This offers parents the opportunity
to apply to any school in the district on an availability basis only. School
Choice students do not receive district provided transportation. Students
attending or scheduled to attend a school on the Open Enrollment Act List
will have priority for schools with a higher API.

The school choice open enrollment period ends Feb.15, 2011 for school year
2011-12. For more information, visit www.sandi.net/enrollmentoptions, or
call the Enrollment Options Office at (619) 725-5672.

MEDIA ADVISORY -- Elementary School Hosts Most Diverse Chinese New Year Celebration

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, January 20, 2010

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HOSTS SAN DIEGO'S MOST DIVERSE CHINESE NEW YEAR
CELEBRATION

WHAT: Barnard Elementary Mandarin Chinese Magnet School's third annual
PASSPORT TO CHINA: Year of the Rabbit

WHEN: 9:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 2, for local dignitaries (journalists
welcome) 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, big public celebration (please
advance!).

WHERE: 2930 Barnard Street, San Diego, CA 92110

SAN DIEGO -- You could close your eyes and imagine you're in Beijing – but
once you opened them, you couldn't possibly make that mistake.

The children at Point Loma's Barnard Mandarin Chinese Immersion Magnet
School are 37 percent Hispanic, 30 percent white, 21 percent African
American, 12 percent Asian/Pacific Islander. Thirty percent are English
learners. Sixty-one percent are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Many
students belong to military families, with parents fighting in distant
lands.

Yet here they are, like something out of "Rainbow Nation," shouting "Xin
Nian Kuai Le!" (Happy New Year!) and lecturing guests on the Year of the
Rabbit – "Nián de tùzǐ" – in Mandarin, of course.

This is an unlikely educational rags-to-riches story. In 2006-07, Barnard's
low enrollment and poor academic performance pushed it dangerously close to
closure: Only 28 percent of its second graders scored proficient or better
in English on standardized tests. Something had to give.

The school district rolled the dice and tried to turn things around by
opening one of Southern California's first Mandarin magnet schools, wagering
that learning another language and culture would spark little minds. In came
a raft of new teachers, and a singular, quixotic mission: Groom these
children to handle the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, and
help make them competent and confident global citizens.

Three years later, the gamble is clearly paying off. The number of second
graders scoring proficient or better in
English skyrocketed from that dismal 28 percent to a stunning 69 percent by
2008-09 – and the gains are as
impressive in other grades as well.

Barnard has been named a California Distinguished School, and in 2010, it
clocked one of the greatest gains of
any school in San Diego on the Academic Performance Index and other
standardized tests (see accompanying
fact sheet). There is still much to do, but there is also much to celebrate.

Please join us on Feb. 2 and Feb. 5 to celebrate Chinese New Year – and our
achievements! We'll have a traditional
lion dance, martial arts demonstrations, Chinese musical performances, and,
best of all, performances by Barnard's
incredible students. The festival draws hundreds of people from all over the
county.

Tiger Teams will initially be established to review the following areas:

·         Human Resources

·         Transportation/Fleet Management (including bussing schedules and operational costs)

·         IT (Information and Technology)

Including i21 plan and proposed data center

·         Special Education

We will also graciously accept general budget savings suggestions.

See attached January 11, 2011 announcement regarding the establishment of the Ad Hoc Committee on Operations and Efficiency and Tiger Teams to review district functions.  For additional information, visit the website at www.sandi.net/efficiency.  While an RSVP is not required, it would be appreciated.  Suggestions for other areas to review, and/or your contact information to, efficiency@sandi.net.

Attachment:    January 11 Board item H.2 (text below)

Agenda Item Text

Board Trustees, Scott Barnett and Kevin Beiser will discuss the newly established Ad Hoc Committee on Operations and Efficiency and will provide information on how the public can assist and participate.

Newly elected Board of Education Members Scott Barnett and Kevin Beiser are heading up the new Operations and Efficiency Committee.  The goal is to generate efficiencies and savings minimizing administrative costs so that more district resources can go directly to the classroom.

Trustees Barnett and Beiser are looking to recruit action-oriented "Tiger Teams," who will spend 30 to 45 days looking at individual functions within the district.  Each team will include district employees and citizen volunteers with private sector expertise in the areas being analyzed.  The Tiger Team will review a department’s purpose, how it operates and collect input from district employees and citizens on alternatives. Results will be reported back to the Board of Education and Superintendent for action.  Noticed public hearings will be held on recommendations prior to being sent to the board.

In addition to looking at consolidating Central Office departments and functions, the Operations and Efficiency Committee will be reviewing, at a minimum, the following areas in its initial review:

·         Human Resources

·         Transportation/Fleet Management, Including bussing schedules and operational costs

·         IT -- Information and Technology

·         Special Education

It should not be inferred that a review of an area indicates any specific concern over the current operation.

Any interested employee, parent or citizen is invited to participate in a “Tiger Team."

It's estimated the review of all district operations will take 12-18 months.

Members of the public with suggestions or who would like to become a member of a Tiger Team can send an email to efficiency@sandi.net. In addition, a website has been established for the effort at www.sandi.net/efficiency.

MEDIA ADVISORY -- French, Spanish or English? Language Academy Gives Sneak Peek to Saturday Enrollment Fair

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, January 14, 2010

FRENCH, SPANISH OR ENGLISH? LANGUAGE ACADEMY GIVES SNEAK PEEK TO SATURDAY
ENROLLMENT FAIR

WHAT: Preview of San Diego Unified School District Enrollment Fair

WHEN: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011

WHERE: Language Academy, 4961 64th Street (92115). Directions: From College
Ave., east on Montezuma Rd.; south on Art St.; east on Mesita Dr. to 64th
Street.

DETAILS: Ahead of the Feb. 15, 2011 Enrollment Options deadline, San Diego
Unified School District is inviting all of San Diego to its Third Annual
School Choice Fair, Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Recital Hall in Balboa Park.
To find out more about this event, we¹re inviting the media to visit one of
the unique choices available -- a French immersion class at the Language
Academy, one of San Diego Unified School District¹s Magnet Schools. As an
immersion school, students spend much of the day -- and lessons in all
subjects are taught -- in the new language. Given San Diego's diversity, we
have students who are already bilingual in English and Spanish -- and are
learning French at the Language Academy.

PHOTOS/SPEAKING: Reporters and photographers will be able to interview and
photograph students in class and on the playground (they go to recess at
11:15). In addition, Area Superintendent Tony Burks, Principal Veronika
Lopez-Mendez, District Magnet School officials, the teacher, parents and
school volunteers will be available for one-on-one interviews. There will be
no formal presentation. We also invite our television friends to load up on
b-roll for elementary school-age students.

ABOUT THE 2011 SCHOOL CHOICE FAIR

Back by popular demand, the 3rd Annual School Choice Fair will take place
from 10 a.m. To 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Balboa Park Recital Hall.

The free event will highlight schools and student performances from
throughout San Diego Unified. Families across the county can learn
first-hand about the many educational options available to students,
including parents who work but do not live within the district¹s attendance
boundaries.

Information about district-run schools, including neighborhood, magnet and
International Baccalaureate, as well as other innovative programs will be
available all in one place. Representatives from the Enrollment Office will
be available to answer school choice application questions.

More than 1,500 families attended last year's event.

The school choice open enrollment period ends Feb.15, 2011 for school year
2011-12. If parents/guardians wish to select a magnet or other neighborhood
school for their child, they need to apply by Feb. 15. San Diego Unified has
a wide variety of choices for education, ranging from traditional
neighborhood elementary and traditional, comprehensive high schools, to
small, specialty schools.
