The Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, and Command Master Chief from VRM-50 will all be in attendance for a campus tour, read-alouds, and the official signing of the partnership agreement.

News Release

Community Partners Join San Diego Unified Clean Water Effort with Water Bottle Giveaway at Cesar Chavez Elementary School

April 26, 2022

SAN DIEGO  -  As the San Diego Unified School District’s clean water partnership continues to expand, the Rob Machado Foundation today announced a fundraising effort to acquire a reusable water bottle for each student in the district. The San Diego Loyal Soccer Club surprised Chavez Elementary School students with refillable water bottles as part of the first donation for the Rob Machado Foundation’s efforts.

"We're thrilled to partner with the Rob Machado Foundation to provide 500 reusable water bottles to students at Cesar Chavez Elementary School," SD Loyal President Ricardo Campos said. "Staying hydrated is key to a healthy and active lifestyle — especially when it comes to playing soccer — and it's even better when you can help the environment while doing so."

Chavez students filled their water bottles from new filtered hydration stations that have been installed on campus. All elementary schools are scheduled to receive filtered hydration stations by the end of 2023, and all remaining schools by the end of 2024, meeting the district’s original schedule despite the interruptions caused by COVID-19.

In the district, 24 schools have transitioned to fully filtered drinking water through hydration stations, including Chavez Elementary. In addition to the hydration stations, filtered drinking water is also provided in the health office and in the teachers’ lounge at Chavez and throughout San Diego Unified.

Temporary filtered bottle fillers have been provided at all schools, ensuring access to lead-free water to all district students while construction continues on the transition to only filtered hydration stations.

San Diego Unified’s clean drinking water plan was built in close collaboration with CALPIRG, a statewide advocacy organization that launched their “Get the Lead Out” campaign. “As we can see from the leadership displayed by San Diego Unified, it is possible to get the lead out and protect children from this preventable toxic exposure,” said Jenn Engstrom, Statewide Director. “We urge school districts across California and the US to follow San Diego’s example and protect children from this toxic threat.”

Following a pilot effort at Clay Elementary School in Rolando Village, the 2020 board-approved plan set a strict public health goal of lead content below one part per billion, one of the strongest action levels nationwide. The district set out to replace approximately 10,000 aging bubblers with about 2,000 strategically placed, filtered water bottle filling stations, or hydration stations.

“We are hunting lead down to the parts per billion,” said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne. “To get a sense of that, one part per billion is the equivalent of a drop of water in an olympic size swimming pool.”

NEWS RELEASE: San Diego Unified Names 2022 Teachers of the Year

[SDUSD-Logo]

NEWS RELEASE

San Diego Unified Names 2022 Teachers of the Year
Educators from Clay Elementary, Marston Middle, and Scripps Ranch High Schools Selected as District Teachers of the Year

April 22, 2022

SAN DIEGO – Andrea Loyko from Clay Elementary School, Joe Paulson from Marston Middle School and Josh Rosenberg from Scripps Ranch High School have been named San Diego Unified School District's 2022 Teachers of the Year. Kimberly Frank from Standley Middle School, Rich Redmond from Baker Elementary, and Jen Harden from San Diego High School (Business and Leadership) have been named this year's Runners-Up. Teacher of the Year candidates go through a rigorous selection process, first being selected by the staff members at their school, then a panel including former Teachers of the Year.

In observance of National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 1-8, 2022, these six devoted educators will be honored at the Day of the Teacher celebration on Tuesday, May 3, at 5 p.m. during a virtual ceremony, hosted by CBS 8's Shawn Styles. More than 130 Teachers of the Year from individual schools will also be honored. During this week, San Diego Unified encourages everyone to honor teachers by sharing a post, image, or video of a special educator in their life. The district challenges San Diegans to thank a teacher either in person, or on social media platforms using the hashtag #ThankATeacherSD.

"I am honored to lead a district that employs the finest teachers in the nation. This year's Teachers of the Year make that undoubtedly apparent," said Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson. "As we honor our distinguished teachers and celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, let us all take a moment to thank the educators in our district and city for all they do for our students year round. Let us honor them through our words and actions. This week is set aside to appreciate teachers, let's remember to appreciate them every day, because the work they do will impact our lives, our community, and our world for years to come."

The Day of the Teacher celebration is a traditional event on the Board of Education calendar. All board members and senior district staff, community leaders, and elected officials take part in honoring the distinguished educators. A virtual ceremony will feature original student created-content performed by students from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts.

This year's virtual event is co-hosted by North Island Credit Union. "As part of our mission to serve and support our education community, we are honored to once again celebrate our outstanding educators as co-host of the 2022 San Diego Unified School District's Teacher of the Year program," said North Island Credit Union President/CEO Steve O'Connell. "The commitment of all our teachers to go above and beyond for their students through the challenges of the past year has been an inspiration to us all. We congratulate each of these recipients and express our deep gratitude to all the educators across our community who continue to bring their dedication and creativity to keep students learning and thriving."

Additional sponsors of the event are California Coast Credit Union, California Schools VEBA, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit, Mission Federal Credit Union, M2 Video Productions, San Diego Education Association, and the San Diego Education Fund.

MEDIA ADVISORY

"Go Green" Student Event Celebrates Public Transportation, Green Spaces for Earth Day

April 21, 2022

Join the San Diego High School Climate Action & Civic Leadership Club (Climate Club) and the San Diego Unified School District as they encourage students to "Go Green" by using public transportation and creating green spaces at school. The goal is to plant over 11,000 California poppy seeds, one for each ride taken on the Silver Line Trolley in 2020, and onboard at least 500 new students to public transit so they can ride free starting next month.

WHAT: To celebrate Earth Day, student leaders wanted to do something special for the environment. The San Diego High School Climate Club will help create new green spaces around campus, and encourage students to take advantage of the new SANDAG Youth Opportunity Pass pilot program that provides free public transportation to students and helps get cars off the road. Public transit emits an estimated 53 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions per passenger mile than the average single occupancy vehicle. More information about the Youth Opportunity Pass pilot program is available at YouthOpportunityPass.sandag.org<https://youthopportunitypass.sandag.org/>.

WHO: San Diego High Principal Francisca Del Carmen, San Diego High Mass Transit Advocate Samuel Sharp, San Diego High Climate Club members
