adjacent to Memorial Charter Middle School. Students from those two schools
will help open the new library at this festive event expected to draw
hundreds of participants.

Students from Logan Elementary School and Memorial Middle School have drawn
pictures depicting their favorite books. These students will parade their

COST:            FREE
Light refreshments will be served

DETAILS:     The funding for this $14.5 million project was made possible by
a state grant of $5.35 million, a $3.4 million loan from the Federal Housing
and Urban Development, with the remainder being paid for by a grant from the
First 5 Commission of San Diego County, the Library System Improvement Fund
and developer fees. The San Diego Library Foundation has also been an active
partner on this project, raising an additional $230,000 in private
contributions, with additional gifts pending.

The new library is a major improvement over the existing facility and
benefits the community in several ways.
· With 25,000 square feet, the new library is more than six times
larger than the old 3,967-square-foot library built in 1927.
· The book collection of the branch has expanded from about 40,700 to
approximately 73,000.
· Compared to the ten computers available in the old library, the new
library has 66 public computers and two early literacy computers for
toddlers.
· The old facility had no dedicated parking, while the new library
has 186 dedicated parking spaces.
· There is a large collection of bilingual books and library
materials in a variety of formats.

The new library is a joint use project between the City of San Diego Public
Library and the San Diego Unified School District. The Joint Agreement
provides the City with a renewable property lease with the school district
of $1.00 per year for a minimum of 50 years. Students from Logan Elementary
and Memorial Charter schools will receive special accommodations, services
and materials at the library including:

· Access to the library by school faculty and students before
open hours.
· School priority for all meeting rooms, labs and seminar rooms.
· A Teacher Resource Collection of books and materials on teaching
and curriculum ideas.
· A 300-seat community room.
· "Centro Cultural," that will showcase student art and bring
cultural programming to the community.
· Establishment of a "teen board" for children to help plan the
programs and activities that relate to them.

The new Logan Heights Branch is also home to one of four Preschooler's Door
to Learning Centers at San Diego Public Library locations. Centers are
designed to promote school readiness from infancy, providing services for
self-enrichment and allow children to discover the pleasures of reading and
learning. The centers are a designated portion of a library designed
exclusively for children younger than five years, their parents and
caregivers. This area also includes space and equipment for the Families for
Literacy Program.
About the Public Art: Mural on Community Room
Title: ³Las Americas de Lejos²/³The Americas From Afar²

This mural, which was commissioned by the Arts and Culture Commission, is a
tribute to the native nations of the American southland of Chile to the
northern Arctic Circle, and the accomplishments of their societies through
astrology, civics, agriculture, architecture and art. The viewpoint is from
a spatial orbit on the underside of the earth, transforming the viewer into
a space traveler. The viewer is witness to the rotating earths on the lower
portion of the mural, to bring attention to current concerns and dangers of
changing climate, melting ice caps, electromagnetic polar shifts and the
effects of rapid technology. Simultaneously, the mural pays tribute to the
Mayan calendar that ends in 2012. One interpretation suggests that during
this transition, the planet and its inhabitants may undergo a positive
physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning
of a new era.

NEWS RELEASE -- Budget Town Halls Continue Tonight, Tomorrow

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, December 8, 2009

Budget Town Halls Continue Tonight, Tomorrow

Tuesday, Wednesday Meetings Discuss Upcoming Budget Cuts

SAN DIEGO -- The third and fourth in a series of budget town-hall meetings
to talk about the future of education funding in the San Diego Unified
School District are this week: 6:30 p.m. tonight at Madison High School and
6:30 p.m. tomorrow at Mission Bay High School.

"As Town Hall meetings are held in each area of the city, people are
becoming aware of the upcoming draconian cuts in education,² said Board
Member John Lee Evans, who will host tonight¹s meeting. ³Last year the Board
approved nearly $150 million in cuts that included central office,
transportation and outside contracts. We tried to keep the cuts as far away
from the classroom as possible.

"With potential cuts of $200 million, the student in the classroom will be
severely affected. At this Town Hall we will address whether we as a
community are willing to have education so inadequately funded. We need to
decide as taxpayers what is important to us.

"We can continue to streamline, but do we want to dramatically increase
class size? Do we want to chop months off the school year? I want to hear
what the community sees as its priorities. I will take that back to the
school board as we develop a budget with very limited funds. Tonight is the
opportunity for citizens to weigh in.

"What we have found out from the previous Town Halls is that people do not
want to stand for these proposed cuts. At this meeting we will explore ways
for San Diegans to unite behind better funding for education."

The upcoming schedule:

-- Tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 8: Madison High School, Library, 4833 Doliva Dr.
(92117). Sub-District A, John Lee Evans.

-- Wednesday, Dec. 9: Mission Bay High School, Library, 2475 Grand Ave.
(92109). Sub-District C, John de Beck.

-- Monday, Dec. 14: Porter Elementary North, Auditorium, 445 S. 47th St.
(92113). Sub-District E, Shelia Jackson.

The meetings are open to the public.

NEWS RELEASE -- SDUSD Math Scores Show Big Gain In National Survey

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, December 8, 2009

SDUSD MATH SCORES SHOW BIG GAIN IN NATIONAL SURVEY

'Nation's Report Card' Gives Top Scores to Fourth, Eighth Grade Skills

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Unified's eighth grade students showed dramatic gains in mastering math skills in 2008-09 and fourth graders also raised their scores, according to results of "The Nation's Report Card" for urban school districts, released today.

Both grades 4 and 8 continued the upward trend in nearly every student group, with eighth graders rising 8 points over the last test in 2007 and 16 points higher than when the first test was administered in 2003. These eighth-grade students continued the improvements they made as fourth graders, when a similar increase was registered.

"This goes to show what sustained progress and determination by our hard-working teachers and students means over the long run," said Bill Kowba, Interim Superintendent. "Not only is the increase this year very impressive, but the fact that these students were able to repeat their fourth grade success as eighth graders is even more noteworthy."

The "Report Card" is a product of the National Assessment of Educational Progress and began in 1969. The current results from the Trial Urban District Assessment compare 18 big-city school districts, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, the District of Columbia, Los Angeles and New York City.

The test looks at a level of proficiency above State of California standards and is designed to challenge the students in a number of areas. Among eighth graders, only Austin and Charlotte beat the national average of 282 points, while San Diego Unified was about equal at 280. A "basic" knowledge score was set at 262 points, while the large-city median was 271.

For fourth graders, proficient was set at 249 points, the average national score was 239, and the large city average was 231 points. San Diego joined Boston, Houston and Miami-Dade County at 236 points, surpassed by only the Charlotte and Austin districts. The basic knowledge score was 214 points.

The achievement gaps between student groups persisted in the 2009 scores. Nearly all student groups in the district saw improved performance compared to 2003. However, compared to 2007, fourth-grade performance declined for several student groups, including students who are eligible for free- or reduced-price lunch, an indicator of their family's income.

More detailed information on the test is available at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard

Results from the reading portion of the test are expected to be released in the Spring.
