MEDIA ADVISORY: 2018 Farm 2 School Family Picnic Oct. 27

Media Advisory from the San Diego Unified School District, Oct. 25, 2018

2018 Farm 2 School Family Picnic

What: The 2018 Farm 2 School Family Picnic (https://farm2schoolpicnic.eventbrite.com) is a community-oriented event to celebrate the Farm to School movement within San Diego County. The family picnic is hosted by the new Farm 2 School Collective, which consists of following five school districts: Cajon Valley Union, Julian Union, San Diego Unified, San Ysidro, and Sweetwater Union High. These school districts account for roughly 35% of the entire County’s entire student population (~170,000 students).

Together, these school districts and their vendors will be providing tasty samples of local food during the picnic for all to enjoy. The picnic will also include outdoor games, music, and the opportunity for schoolchildren, their parents, and their communities to enjoy and learn about the high quality of local, healthy food provided each day to students across these school districts.

Who: Prem Durairaj, Director of Food Systems and Research for Community Health Improvement Partners; Donald Hooper, Head Chef of Jeremy’s on the Hill; Mark Mendoza, Child Nutrition Services Director for Cajon Valley Union School District; Tricia Elisara, Garden and Farm to School Coordinator for Julian Union School District; Tara McNamara, Marketing Coordinator for San Diego Unified Food & Nutrition Services; Francisco Mata, Public Relations & Community Services Coordinator for San Ysidro School District

When: 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Saturday October 27, 2018

Where: Presidents Way Lawn, Park Boulevard & Presidents Way in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA 92101

Why: The Farm 2 School Family Picnic serves as the launch event for the new Farm to School Marketing Campaign during the 2018-2019 school year. The purpose of the campaign is to improve community perception of school meals, and shed light on what

Farm to School means within the five participating school districts. School food has changed dramatically over the last decade, and this is a chance for parents to see (and taste) it together with their children.

By shifting the community perception of the food served in cafeterias, we hope to improve the school meal participation rate within the school districts involved in the Farm to School Collective. We believe that the more parents are informed about what is being served in the cafeterias, the less likely they are to send their child to school with an unhealthier, more expensive lunch packed from home.

The Farm 2 School Family Picnic is managed by the Farm to Institution Center, a department of the San Diego non-profit Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP). CHIP brings together diverse partners to assess community health needs, and to educate and advocate to create policy, systems and environmental change to reduce health disparities. CHIP provides backbone support to plan, coordinate, and support collaborative initiatives to solve our most complex health problems.

The Farm 2 School Family Picnic event is sponsored by the San Diego Foundation.

Visuals:

NEWS RELEASE: Academic gains, student activism show schools have the power to create a #BetterSD; Superintendent Cindy Marten highlights results of the California school reform revolution

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, Oct. 16, 2018

Academic gains, student activism show schools have the power to create a #BetterSD; Superintendent Cindy Marten highlights results of the California school reform revolution

SAN DIEGO - In her 2018 State of the District speech, Superintendent Cindy Marten said the academic progress of San Diego Unified students and their work to improve the communities where they live are evidence that school reform is working. Marten said landmark reform legislation signed by Governor Brown on July 1, 2013, the same day Marten took office leading the state's second-largest school district, has created an education revolution in the State of California. She expressed confidence education reform would eventually help reduce rising inequality in the county and called for an online campaign to highlight the ways schools are improving the city they serve.

This was Marten's sixth State of the District speech, and she used the opportunity to highlight the recent run of good academic news for San Diego Unified students. Among the highlights she noted were: the highest graduation rate among big-city districts in the state; African American and Latino students' progress toward achieving graduation rate parity; and, an increased percentage of students who are college-ready by graduation.

"The California Department of Education highlighted San Diego Unified as a bright spot and one of the districts 'now reaping the benefits of initiatives to improve student performance,'" Marten said in her remarks. "The National Council of Great City Schools put it more simply. They said our students 'blew the socks off' national testing results."

Beyond the academic progress students have made, Marten highlighted some of the concrete ways students are contributing to their hometown. She introduced a video documenting the student-run thrift store at Patrick Henry High, where students interested in recycling are selling used goods to benefit students in need. During her speech, Marten wore a necklace she had purchased at the thrift store. The superintendent also shared the story of students who have saved lives through their knowledge of hands-only CPR, a joint initiative of the school district, the county and the American Heart Association.

"The necklace I am wearing from the Patrick Henry Thrift Store has an M on it for Marten," said the Superintendent before adding, "That M could just as easily stand for march, because we are raising a generation of students who have accepted their responsibility to shape their world. They are not waiting. They are on the march."

Marten said both the academic progress and the impact students are having on the broader community are the result of strategic investments in equity under the 2013 Local Control Funding Formula, statewide school reform legislation to target funding toward high-needs districts like San Diego. Marten said San Diego Unified has doubled down on equity funding by increasing the share of state funding for individual schools within the system that have higher needs than others.

"The education revolution in California is moving us closer to a world where your zip code does not determine your destiny," Marten said. She called education the engine that drives social mobility in our county and called for added progress to eliminate inequality.

Throughout her speech, Marten highlighted the ability of individual stories to inspire whole communities to action. She said the district plans to follow the example set by students and create an online campaign to inspire progress toward a better community. She encouraged everyone involved with the schools to prepare to share their own stories on how education is making San Diego stronger.

NEWS RELEASE: Local Girl Scouts Lead Effort to Train Hundreds in Hands-Only CPR and Help Muirlands Middle School Receive Heart Safe School Accreditation

News Release from the San Diego Unified School District, Oct. 12, 2018

SAN DIEGO: For nearly four years, members of La Jolla Girl Scout Troop 3803, Selma Hyytinen, Maggie Johnson, Natalie Saham, Allison Foerster and Amber Watt, have been raising community awareness about sudden cardiac arrest, and have assisted in the training of more than 600 middle school students and staff members in Hands-Only CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use.

While working toward their Girl Scout Silver Award, the troop also completed the Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes Foundation’s (SADS) Heart Safe School accreditation process to make Muirlands Middle School the first public school in California to achieve this distinction.

These students, along with the Girl Scouts of San Diego, San Diego Project Heart Beat, American Heart Association – San Diego, and San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten, gathered today to share their journey, and celebrate the school’s accreditation and the students’ Girl Scout Silver award.

“This is everything I know that is good and right about public education. About the American Heart Association. About the Girls Scouts USA.” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “This is what happens when great organizations come together to support the vision of leaders like you girls. I am so proud and so impressed by what you have done.

“You girls are leading the way for something that will happen across the district, this state and this nation because you have shown through your leadership how to make it happen. You are amazing leaders and I thank you for what you have done.”

Heart Safe School Accreditation for Muirlands Middle School is the culmination of a four-year journey for the girls in troop 3803 that began after Maggie Johnson’s father went into cardiac arrest while working out. CPR saved his life.

In 2014, Troop 3803 began partnering with San Diego Project Heart Beat to provide CPR/AED training to elementary and middle schools in La Jolla. To expand their efforts, the girls reached out to San Diego Unified School District for assistance. In 2016, the district partnered with the American Heart Association, County Supervisor Ron Roberts, and the County of San Diego, who provided a $100,000 grant to purchase Hands-only CPR training kits for students across the district. These additional kits helped the students train more students at Bird Rock Elementary, where their efforts began, and Muirlands Middle.

“The American Heart Association has a vision to train thousands of young life-savers across our county, and with funding support from Supervisor Roberts and leadership support from Superintendent Cindy Marten, they were able to bring that vision to life at Muirlands and throughout the District,” said Jennifer Sobotka, American Heart Association San Diego Division Executive Director. “And that vision is catching on, as we continue to see more examples across the district of students and teachers being empowered through education and taking action, teaching CPR, learning CPR, saving lives….”

The Heart Safe School Accreditation program consists of 7 elements aimed at raising awareness and preventing sudden cardiac arrest. These include: Screening/Risk Assessment, Care Plans, Emergency Medical Response Drills, Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs), CPR Training for Staff, CPR Training for Students and Sudden Cardiac Awareness Activity/Event/Fundraiser.

To achieve this accreditation, the girls:

  • Prepared a presentation about their intention and met with then Principal Harlan Klein to gain his approval to begin the accreditation process.
  • Reached out to San Diego Project Heart Beat to request Hands-Only CPR/AED training for the school’s entire 7th grade class of more than 300 students in 2017 and again in 2018.
  • Assisted in each of the 12 training sessions in 2017 and 2018 (six per year).
  • Studied information on the SADS website about Emergency Medical Drills, prepared detailed checklists, and then collaborated with Muirlands’ staff to run drills at the school.
  • Conducted, timed, and videotaped three Emergency Medical Drills.
  • Trained fellow students how to use the Pulse Point app to locate nearby AEDs.
  • Created and funded an “Identify the Most AEDs” contest to educate Muirlands Middle students about where these life-saving devices are located throughout the community.
  • Raised awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest by hosting a booth at the Muirlands Rocks community festival in May 2018.

The girls have since moved on from Muirlands Middle School and attend other La Jolla- area schools, including La Jolla High, The Bishop’s School and Francis Parker, where they are continuing their efforts to train students in Hands-only CPR.

“You have proven yourself determined leaders dedicated to improving your community,” Girl Scouts San Diego CEO Carol Dedrich told the girls. “By earning the Silver Award, you demonstrate you are a person of courage. And you’re capable of speaking up and devoting yourself to a worthy cause. As Silver Award Girl Scouts, you have grown in your confidence, taking on a challenge that no one else has. You strengthen your character knowing that good intentions count for little until your ability and determination produce results. I want to thank Selma, Maggie, Natalie, Allison and Amber for bringing us here today because you have made the world a better place.”

BACKGROUND:

Heart Safe School Accreditation for Muirlands Middle School is the culmination of a four-year journey for the girls in troop 3803 that began after one girls' father went into cardiac arrest while working out.

  • Reached out to San Diego Project Heart Beat to request Hands-Only CPR/AED training for the school's entire 7th grade class of more than 300 students in 2017 and again in 2018.
  • Assisted in each of the 12 training sessions in 2017 and 2018 (six per year).
  • Studied information on the SADS website about Emergency Medical Drills, prepared detailed checklists, and then collaborated with Muirlands' staff to run drills at the school.
  • Conducted, timed, and videotaped three Emergency Medical Drills.
  • Trained fellow students how to use the Pulse Point app to locate nearby AEDs.
  • Created and funded an "Identify the Most AEDs" contest to educate Muirlands Middle students about where these life-saving devices are located throughout the community.
  • Raised awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest by hosting a booth at the Muirlands Rocks community festival in May 2018.

The girls have since moved on from Muirlands Middle School and attend other La Jolla- area schools, including La Jolla High, The Bishop's School and Francis Parker, where they are continuing their efforts to train students in Hands-only CPR.
