SDUSD NEWS RELEASE – Patrick Henry High School’s Arts, Media, and Entertainment (PHAME) Performing Arts Center and Production Studios Recognized for Outstanding Architecture

SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS RELEASE – Patrick Henry High School's Arts, Media, and  Entertainment (PHAME) Performing Arts Center and Production Studios Recognized for Outstanding Architecture

October 27, 2017

SAN DIEGO – During the annual Orchids and Onions award ceremony hosted by the San Diego Architectural Foundation, Patrick Henry High School's eye catching new facility was awarded an Orchid for outstanding architecture.

Designed by PJHM Architects, the state-of-the-art facility features a 500-seat performing arts center and a College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) Production Studios program space, which wraps around half of the theater. The project also includes an enclosed lobby area, ticket booth, student store and parking lot expansion. Influenced by the surrounding area, the design of the facility used heavy timbers, open glass and the colors and textures of the environment around it.  The new theatre includes a 45-foot-high fly loft, a 20- foot-high proscenium and an orchestra pit.

More than just great architecture, the award-wining facility is providing crucial infrastructure for regional growth in the arts. The theater and production studio can fully support musical and theatrical events and holds the capacity to support the entire production process, from set and costume design spaces, to lighting and audio workshops, to digital fabrication and woodshop production areas.

"I am so excited for this award and the beautiful architecture this facility brings to the community, but I am way more excited for what this facility is doing for students," said school board Vice President Kevin Beiser. "This facility directly supports and enhances the district's visual and performing arts program and should speak volumes about the district's commitment to the arts. I can't wait to see what these students accomplish."

With specialized workshop spaces and through joint-use agreements with local theater and orchestra groups, students are given the opportunity to pursue a career pathways in fabrication design, audio visual technology, and model and mixed media while having direct access to professional performances. The CCTE Production Studios program provides education in two career pathways within the arts, media and entertainment industry sector: media and design arts, as well as production and managerial arts.

"San Diego Unified believes in the ability of the arts to transform lives, and this building is evidence of that commitment," said Superintendent Cindy Marten. "This beautiful building is more than bricks and mortar.  It is physical proof of the way the arts can create transformational change in the lives of our students, their school and our community."

These projects are funded by San Diego Unified School District's Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified. Prop. S is a capital facilities program that is funded by a $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 4, 2008. Prop. Z is a capital facilities program funded by a $2.8 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 6, 2012. By law, the funds cannot be used for teachers' or school administrators' salaries, nor can they be used for maintenance or operations.

**UPDATE** NEWS RELEASE: San Diego Unified Extends Minimum Day Schedules at Many School Sites October 25 Due to Anticipated High Temperatures

[logo]

*UPDATE* Sunset View Elementary will NOT be on a minimum-day schedule tomorrow as previously mentioned.

NEWS RELEASE
October 24, 2017

San Diego Unified Extends Minimum-Day Schedules at Many School Sites October 25 Due to Anticipated High Temperatures

The San Diego Unified School District will be implementing minimum-day schedules at many schools tomorrow, October 25, due to anticipated high temperatures, humidity and heat index. Schools on regular day schedules are expected to operate under our Hot Weather Plan guidelines

For a full list of the school on minimum-day schedule please see the list below or click on the following link https://www.sandiegounified.org/hot-weather-school-list

We are aware that high temperatures are expected tomorrow, and we want to make sure that our students and staff are as comfortable as possible so that learning can continue.

When temperatures are expected to be 95 degrees or higher with a heat index of 103 degrees or higher, campuses with less than 80 percent of their classrooms air conditioned may be instructed to move to a minimum-day schedule. The Superintendent's decision to call a half day is a collaborative effort among district staff and school communities to determine what's in the best interest of students.

All district schools have Hot Weather Plans in place and will implement those plans tomorrow. We are proud that the number of schools with air conditioning has increased over the past year as we work to install air conditioning at all our schools.

Guidelines for our Hot Weather Plan – detailed in Administrative Procedure 4032 – are posted at www.sandiegounified.org/hotweather<http://www.sandiegounified.org/hotweather>

SDUSD NEWS RELEASE – First Home Game at Crawford High School As New Stadium Nears Completion

San Diego Unified School District NEWS RELEASE – First Home Game at Crawford High School As New Stadium Nears Completion

October 23, 2017

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Unified School District leaders and the Crawford High School community kicked off the first home football game in several years with a fair and ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the completion of the new stadium. The seven-acre football stadium, constructed as part of an ongoing campus-wide modernization, includes a new synthetic turf field, all-weather running track, new accessible bleachers, public address system, new scoreboard, stadium and security lighting, as well as nearly 5,800 square feet of new support facilities.

"From students and staff to alumni and neighbors, it is wonderful to see how excited this community is," said school board trustee Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne. "Along with the rich curriculum and programs offered by Crawford High School, these new facilities are allowing Crawford High School to continue its legacy as a centerpiece of the El Cerrito community."

The multi-million dollar campus modernization includes several projects being constructed in phases. Funded through San Diego Unified's facilities bond program, air conditioning has been added to all classrooms, along with the installation of digital interactive classroom technology and campus wifi. A new baseball field was recently completed, while construction on new tennis courts, softball field, and classroom renovations are currently underway.

"Creating beautiful modern buildings is about more than architecture. We are encouraging our students to dream big for their own futures, to think about making a big impact on the world," said district Superintendent Cindy Marten. "At the same time, these building are transforming entire neighborhoods and giving San Diego residents a new reason to be proud of our beautiful city."

Additional work at Crawford High School will include the demolition of two older buildings that will be replaced with a new three-story, twenty-classroom building and parking lot. The new building will provide spaces for campus administration and a new performing arts center.

Media Advisory - Hot Weather Schedule for Some Schools

MEDIA ADVISORY - San Diego Unified School District

October 22, 2017

Multiple Schools To Operate On Minimum-Day Schedules Due To Heat

The San Diego Unified School District will implement minimum-day schedules at multiple schools tomorrow, October 23, due to an excessive heat forecast.

For a complete list of schools operating on a minimum-day schedule, please check here: https://www.sandiegounified.org/hot-weather-school-list

The safety and well-being of students and staff is a top priority for the district. We want to make sure they are as comfortable as possible so teaching and learning can continue. As a result, our schools have a number of guidelines in place for planning instruction during hot weather.

Schools on regular schedules are expected to operate under our Hot Weather Plan guidelines. Schools are selected for minimum-day schedules based on several factors, including the availability of air-conditioning, forecast of high temperatures, humidity and the heat index, as outlined in the Hot Weather Plan guidelines.

The district will closely monitor forecasted conditions for Tuesday and will notify families and staff as soon as possible the status of Tuesday's plan.
