John Muir Language Academy Students Dedicate Campus Transformation with UTK Spanish Immersion Performances, Ceremonial Ribbon-Cutting

March 27, 2024

SAN DIEGO -  A campus transformation at John Muir Language Academy is officially complete.

Students at the Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) - 8th grade Spanish Immersion magnet school in Clairemont joined parents, staff, and district leaders in dedicating their new campus facilities on Wednesday.

The celebration included UTK Spanish dance and music performances, remarks from students, district leaders, and the school principal, and a ribbon-cutting to dedicate the new two-story classroom and student services facility and a new UTK and kindergarten classroom building.

“We are proud of the fact that Muir and our robust Dual Language Programs create opportunities for students to learn and honor diversity in people and use the classroom experience as an opportunity to connect socially and academically,”  said Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson.

Originally built in 1961, the campus was home to Anderson Elementary before becoming the John Muir School in 2005. In 2016, San Diego Unified replaced the decomposed granite field with a synthetic turf soccer field, and, in late 2020, construction began on this campus transformation.

“I came to Muir when these facilities had already come to fruition and I was blown away,” said Principal NeTassha Rendón, who joined the school in November 2023. “There were a lot of people who invested their time and vision in this school to bring it to what it is today, and it shows.”

Before Rendón joined Muir and before construction began, parents and community members provided input to the project team to come up with what would benefit students the most.

In addition to the new UTK and kindergarten building, the project includes a new locker building with a basketball pavilion, a staff parking lot, a reconfigured visitor parking lot with a student drop-off and pick-up area, and renovations to existing classrooms, restrooms, the multi-purpose building with the kitchen, and exterior playground areas. Dated portable classrooms were also removed as part of the project.

As a magnet school, Muir attracts students from outside the neighborhood attendance zones, bringing in students from all across San Diego.

Other magnet schools at San Diego Unified offer communications and community leadership, creative, visual, and performing arts, global citizenship, international studies and internal baccalaureate, and STEM and STEAM programs.

“Our goal is to close the achievement gap and to boost enrollment districtwide,” said Sabrina Bazzo, a trustee with the San Diego Unified Board of Education. “These stunning facilities and modern learning spaces are helping us get there.”

Kearny High Students Join District Leaders in Celebrating Construction Groundbreaking for New Classroom Building, Campus Upgrades

March 11, 2024

SAN DIEGO -  Kearny High School’s latest phase in its campus transformation is officially underway.

On Monday, students joined district leaders for a groundbreaking ceremony that kicked off with a display of colors from the Kearny High Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps and a performance from the cheer team.

The ceremony marked the start of construction on the school’s next wave of its Whole Site Modernization project, which will construct a new two-story classroom and student services facility, modernize nine classrooms and the student dining area, renovate the softball field, create some outdoor collaborative learning spaces, remove all portable classrooms, and enhance school security.

“At San Diego Unified, we are committed to creating schools where all students feel seen and heard, where they can thrive, and where they feel a sense of belonging,” said Dr. Lamont Jackson, San Diego Unified School District Superintendent. “Kearny High represents those values.”

Located along Komet Way, the new building replaces the aging student services facility. It will serve as the main campus entryway and include a lobby, student support spaces, classrooms, collaborative workspaces, and modern security technology.

Classroom modernizations include new furniture, flooring, door hardware, sinks, whiteboards, and technology upgrades. Outdoor improvements include new collaborative learning spaces, upgraded signage and exterior paint, and new fencing and gates to direct visitors to the secure main campus entryway.

Since 2010, Kearny High has received a series of bond-funded upgrades, including College, Career, and Technical facilities for Arts, Media, & Entertainment, and a new Engineering Innovation Design Lab. Additional upgrades were made to the athletic fields, the elevator and press box, and gymnasium bleachers. Energy sustainability was also enhanced with the installation of solar photovoltaic panels.

“It’s so wonderful to see all the work that has been and continues to be done for Kearny High School,” said Sabrina Bazzo, Board of Education Trustee for San Diego Unified. “We are so thankful for the local voters who passed our bond measures - you are forever changing the lives of our students.”

The Kearny High Educational Complex offers schools of Biomedical Science and Technology, College Connections, Digital Media and Design, and Engineering, Design, and Innovation. Nationally recognized by EdSource as one of the most successful implementations of high school reform, Kearny High has served the Kearny Mesa, Linda Vista, and Serra Mesa communities for more than 80 years.

In recent years, Kearny High School has received numerous accolades. A California Distinguished and Blue Ribbon School, Kearny has been recognized three times with a Title I Academic Achievement Award and was one of twelve schools nationwide to be named America’s Best Urban School by the National Center for Urban School Transformation. It has also been featured in a case study by the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools.

“As a Kearny High administrator, I have worked with an incredible team to transform and reform this school to what it is today,” said Ana Diaz-Booz, Principal of Kearny High School. “This project will only continue our vision of transformation.”

Construction on the current project is estimated to be completed in the winter of 2026.

Celebrating California Arts Education Month: Oak Park Elementary School Music Students and District Leaders Celebrate Construction Halfway Mark for Upcoming Music Building

March 7, 2024

SAN DIEGO -  Oak Park Elementary School’s new music building is now halfway complete, marking a major milestone in the campus’ transformation.

To celebrate the project and California Arts Education Month, the school’s “Tempo Tigers” performed Thursday in front of the facility that will soon house music classrooms. A music magnet school, Oak Park Elementary offers instruction in band, orchestra, keyboard lab, guitars, and chorus.

The event follows a February 27 San Diego Unified Board of Education resolution to recognize March as California Arts Education Month, which recognizes the importance of teaching music, dance, visual arts, and media arts in public schools.

“Music and arts education offer students meaningful opportunities to learn, express themselves, and develop a sense of belonging at school and in life. I am excited about how these new facilities will inspire current and future Oak Park musicians,” Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson said.

Construction began in the summer of 2023 on the UTK-5th-grade campus’ transformation to replace all portable classrooms with three new buildings - the music building, a UTK/kindergarten facility, and a general education classroom facility.

Funded by San Diego Unified’s Capital Bond Improvement program, the project will also add a new parking lot with a dedicated student pick-up and drop-off area, exterior paint enhancements, renovations to all remaining classrooms, two new play structures and a large shade canopy in the upper-grade play area, and a new shade shelter in the UTK/kindergarten play area.

To enhance security, the existing student services offices will be modified to create a monitored single point of entry. Perimeter fencing will also be installed to direct visitors to the main campus entryway.

“It’s wonderful what we are doing for this school and schools throughout the Crawford cluster,” Board of Education Trustee Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne said.

A. In February 2024, Oak Park Elementary received a Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant that will go toward a new media arts maker space. The grant would make the campus San Diego Unified’s first elementary media arts magnet school.

“This new music facility will only uplift the program and our students to new heights,” Principal Antoinette Curtis said.

Construction is anticipated to be completed by the summer of 2025.
