MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified + San Diego Press Club present: December ED Talks

San Diego journalists are invited to participate in a special installment of ED Talks, a casual forum hosted by the San Diego Unified School District in collaboration with the San Diego Press Club. The goal is to foster open and robust conversations about public education.
 
The December forum will be devoted to the Proposition YY bond measure, a $3.5 billion initiative that passed with support from 64 percent of voters on Election Day. The event will take place at Innovation Middle School, a campus recently redesigned under San Diego Unified’s new design specs.

Professional journalists will have an opportunity to ask questions and participate in a conversation about the next generation of world class schools in San Diego. Campus tours will be available.

Hundreds of Students to Break Ground on New Music Building at Mira Mesa High School

 

WHAT:          Hundreds of Mira Mesa High School band students and the San Diego Unified School District will celebrate the construction of a new music building and campus-wide improvements with a groundbreaking ceremony.

 

WHEN:          Tuesday November 13, 2018

 

6:30am – 7:30am: Morning Live Hits (Interviews, B-Roll opportunities). Please call and confirm attendance.

 

7:45am – 8:15am: Student Performance and Groundbreaking Ceremony

                              

 

WHERE:       Mira Mesa High School, 10510 Marauder Way, San Diego, CA 92126

 

VISUALS:     6:00am: Music students with instruments, school and district staff available for interviews, tours of construction site, project renderings.

 

                        7:45am: Hundreds of music students will provide a musical performance while flanking the groundbreaking location. Behind them will be heavy construction equipment and the recently completed football stadium.  Their performance will be followed by a brief speaking program and the groundbreaking ceremony. Parents, community members, and school and district staff.

 

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS:

 

                        San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten, Board of Education Trustee John Lee Evans, Facilities Planning and Construction Chief Lee Dulgeroff, Principal Jeff Sabins, Mira Mesa High School students and families.

 

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

                       

                        The Site Modernization project at Mira Mesa High School includes construction of a new classroom building, music building, and upgrades to existing buildings and systems.

                        The new classroom building provides 14 classrooms and additional educational support spaces. The new music building provides a band rehearsal room, orchestra rehearsal room, practice spaces, and storage.

 

                        Upgrades to existing buildings and systems include the public address system, fire alarm system, walkways, voice over internet telephone system, i21 classroom technology, classroom remodels and renovations. The project provides accessibility and other improvements to satisfy California Building Code requirements.

 

 

BACKGROUND:

 

                        San Diego Unified’s capital projects are funded by San Diego Unified School District’s Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Annual San Diego Unified School Police "True Blue Buddies" Thanksgiving  Dinner

 

WHAT: Students from Central Elementary School will take part in a special Thanksgiving dinner with their "True Blue Buddies" School Police Officer mentors.

WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 14, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
 
WHERE: Wilson Middle School Auditorium, 3838 Orange Ave., San Diego, CA (92105)      
 
DETAILS: The dinner is a part of a year-long mentorship program that includes a series of events throughout the school year, including educational workshops and holiday gatherings. The primary goal of the program is to provide support through small group mentoring, as well as to help facilitate and build positive relationships with police officers at an early age. Participants were selected based on need, and include students from low-income families, military families and homeless families.

WHAT: Enrollment Options Fair

WHEN: Saturday, Nov.10, 2018, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Enrollment Options Center Annex 12 4100 Normal Street, San Diego CA 92103 – The Enrollment Options Center is located on the west side of the Eugene Brucker Education Center along Campus Avenue, next to Birney Elementary School. 

DETAILS: Is your child passionate about the arts, science, math, language? San Diego Unified's specialized education programs might be a good fit for your family! As the final stretch of the "choice window" approaches, the enrollment options center will hold an Enrollment Options Fair on Veterans Day weekend.

This will be the final weekend before the choice window closes, providing an opportunity for families to stop by on a Saturday for personalized assistance. All members of the community are invited to take advantage of the weekend fair and find out what San Diego Unified has to offer. The event will include assistance for military families, bilingual enrollment assistance in Spanish, early-childhood education and Pre-K application assistance, and personalized one-on-one consultations.
