San Diego Unified Achieves Highest Graduation Rate Among Large California Districts

 

SAN DIEGO – Today, the State of California released the official graduation rate data for the Class of 2016, and San Diego Unified ranked first among the top 5 largest districts – ahead of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Long Beach and Fresno. The state put the final graduation rate number for San Diego Unified at 91.2 percent – within a percentage point of the district’s own internal estimate or “on track” number released last spring.

 

“The students, parents and teachers of San Diego Unified should be immensely proud of this achievement. Not only did the Class of 2016 achieve the highest big-district graduation rate in the state, they did it while we raised the requirements to graduate,” said Superintendent Cindy Marten. “Our students have proven once again they will achieve more when we ask more from them.”

 

San Diego Unified has implemented a major reform initiative over the past decade, requiring schools to provide students with access to the A-G curriculum required for admission to the University of California and California State college systems. Last year – 2016 – was the first year San Diego Unified students were required to complete the A-G curriculum as a condition for graduation.

 

“This is a great day for the students, parents and professional educators in San Diego, and for all of us who believe in public education,” said Board President Richard Barrera. “The results our students achieved during the last graduation period are proof of what’s possible when we believe in our students and invest in public education.”

 

Education advocates also celebrated the San Diego Unified graduation rate, noting the district’s progress in closing the “achievement gap” between African American and Latino students, and the overall student population. The graduation rate for African Americans and Latino students in 2016 was 87.4 percent and 87.6 percent respectively.

 

“Across San Diego Unified, our students are achieving more and graduating at higher rates than ever,” Superintendent Marten said  Our progress toward closing the achievement gap is proof that our parents and professional educators are creating a culture of excellence in every neighborhood school.

San Diego Unified Launches New Food Recovery Program; Donating 7,000 Pounds of Food for Community Hunger Relief Efforts
New program offers an avenue for leftover food from the school meal program to be diverted from the landfill to local organizations facing food shortages

WHAT: Just in time for Earth Month, San Diego Unified is announcing the Love Food Not Waste San Diego Unified School District food recovery and rescue program. This pilot program offers an avenue for leftover food from the school meal program to be diverted from the landfill to hunger relief efforts. In the month of February 2017 the pilot program rescued more than 7,000 pounds of food, equating to more than 5,900 recovered meals. (YTD: 25,500 recovered meals)

The Love Food Not Waste Program is a partnership between San Diego Unified and Feeding San Diego. Feeding San Diego coordinates with additional local partners, such as the San Diego Rescue Mission and a number of smaller organizations who are given the opportunity to pick up food surplus from San Diego Unified school prep kitchens.

The new program has already had a positive impact on the community at the Troy Center for Supportive Learning. The Troy Center for Supportive Learning is a care facility for adults with chronic mental illness and disabling conditions, and the high quality meal donations they are now receiving through the SDUSD Love Food Not Waste program has allowed them to use their limited funds to attend to other pressing operational needs that they had not been able to previously address.

In addition to its efforts to reduce the amount of food waste going to landfills, San Diego Unified Food & Nutrition Services is also ramping up efforts to provide teachers and school staff with healthy celebration tips and nutrition education. New online resources for healthy celebrations, healthy fundraisers, and healthy rewards as well as free nutrition education curricula are now available on San Diego Unified's Food & Nutrition Service's website.

More than 100 San Diego Youth to Play at Copley Symphony Hall
San Diego Unified Students Present High School Honors Concert

WHAT: Student musicians from 12 San Diego Unified School District high schools will perform at the Jacobs Music Center Symphony Hall. Students will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play on the San Diego Symphony stage.

The students were selected by audition to perform major band and orchestral works under the direction of guest conductors Albert Jeung, Director of Orchestras in the Capistrano Unified Schools District and Dr. Shannon Kitelinger, San Diego State University Director of Bands.

The two performing groups, High School Honor Band and High School Honor Orchestra, include more than 100 students from Hoover High School, La Jolla High School, Mira Mesa High School, Mission Bay High School, Morse High School, Patrick Henry High School, Point Loma High School, San Diego High School, the School of Creative & Performing Arts, Scripps Ranch High School, Serra High School and University City High School.

Every year, San Diego Unified students present three Instrumental Honor Concerts, -- Elementary, Middle and High School, showcasing the high level of musical achievement of the students.

The San Diego Unified School District is proud of its commitment to arts education, and is thrilled to announce that several of the student musicians participating in Sunday's concert have been offered music scholarships to colleges across the nation.

Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.

Testing for lead in water at San Diego Unified schools started today; Testing to be completed by mid-June

SAN DIEGO –The City of San Diego began testing water for lead today at schools in San Diego Unified School District. It is anticipated that the water testing at district schools, and charter schools operating on district property, will be completed by mid-June.

The testing is made possible by a partnership with the City of San Diego. The comprehensive effort will take several months to complete due to the relevant regulatory requirements.

The safety and health of students and staff across San Diego Unified is the highest priority for the district. Therefore, the district will be using a geographic approach that provides the most efficient testing. Five schools will be tested daily, beginning in the southeast corner of the district where some of the oldest district schools are located. City staff will proceed north and west until all testing is complete.

Testing will occur before school begins to avoid any disruptions to learning. Up to five samples will be taken at each site. The sampling locations may include drinking fountains, cafeterias and food preparation areas. The city will analyze the water samples and notify the school district of the results. All results will be posted online as they are received.

If results indicate there is lead above allowable levels, district staff will determine the source of contamination and take appropriate action on a case-by-case basis (e.g., turn off water, replace fixtures and/or make plumbing repairs).
Background
Water for all San Diego Unified schools is provided by the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department. The city, as a municipal water provider, is required to comply with state and federal regulations and, as such, it conducts numerous water quality tests and produces related reports. The standards of quality for the water it provides are extremely high.
As a result of a December 20, 2016, permit action by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Division of Drinking Water, all community water providers, including the City of San Diego, are required to test for lead in drinking water at K-12 schools.

District staff recently met with representatives from the Public Utilities Department to discuss this new program and inform city staff of our intent to request sampling at all district schools (including charter schools located on district properties), and to develop an implementation plan. The program outlined above is a result of those meetings.

San Diego Unified looks forward to working with the San Diego delegation of the California Assembly and Senate, to discuss how we can work collaboratively regarding safe, reliable and healthy water for families.
