San Diego Unified to 'Raise the Flag' in Honor of Juneteenth with Students and Community Partners

WHAT: In celebration of the Juneteenth federal holiday, San Diego Unified School District, in partnership with the People's Association of Justice Advocates, will raise the official Juneteenth flag at the district's central office. The annual flag raising ceremony will be led by Black Student Union Coalition student leaders, who will mark the occasion alongside district leaders, educators, members of the Board of Education, and community organization leaders.
The ceremony represents San Diego Unified's commitment to uplifting the voices of Black students and teaching about important cultural historical events.

BACKGROUND:
In June 2020, the San Diego Unified Board of Education passed a resolution recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday, "to be observed every year, as a day of celebration of the past, present, and future of Black resilience, culture, and liberation." In 2021, President Joe Biden officially recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. That year, San Diego Unified raised the official Juneteenth flag for the first time with the support of many community members, including Shane Harris, who donated the Juneteenth flag that was used.
Continuing the tradition of raising the Juneteenth flag this year signals the ongoing work of the District outlined in the 2020 Board resolution to, "teach the importance of Juneteenth and current movements such as 'Black Lives Matter' that advance liberation efforts for the Black community with classroom lessons throughout the year."

San Diego Unified and Educators to Address Labor Shortage, Retain and Attract New Staff

The San Diego Unified School District will strengthen efforts to recruit and retain educators for hard-to-staff positions under an agreement with the San Diego Education Association (SDEA) that helps address a labor shortage exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
San Diego Unified will offer $10,000 hiring incentives for special education and school nursing positions filled, under the tentative agreement with SDEA pending ratification by both parties. The proposal also seeks to help schools prevent further learning loss while students continue to recover from the pandemic.
“Together, we have reached an agreement that allows our schools to better support our students who are still recovering from the effects of the pandemic,” said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, president of the San Diego Unified Board of Education. “This agreement allows us to recruit and retain the best and brightest to work at our schools while also recognizing the incredible work that our educators continue to do under difficult circumstances.”
The Memorandum of Understanding was reached in the spirit of:
· Mitigating the impacts of staffing shortages on employees, students, and school communities, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic
· Offering incentive hiring/transfers into hard-to-staff positions in special education and nursing
· Attracting and retaining employees to help prevent further learning loss
· Acknowledging the continued additional duties of staff related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This agreement recognizes the hard work and commitment of educators as we continue to navigate challenging times together. It also strives to positively impact our students by helping retain and recruit in critically needed areas like special education and school nursing,” said Kyle Weinberg, vice president of SDEA.
The proposal includes transfer and hiring incentives in special education and nursing, areas that have been hard hit by the labor shortage. Current educators who hold both a general education and special education credential and who transfer from a general education to a special education assignment from May to November 2022 will receive a $10,000 incentive. New employees hired into a special education or nursing assignment for the 2022-23 school year will receive a $10,000 incentive, under the agreement.
Additionally, employees in active paid status will receive 4.5 percent of their annual base salary to be paid in ten equal installments during the 2022-2023 school year.
The district labor relations team will continue to work with all of the other unions to engage in bargaining for any hard-to-staff positions within their respective units.
San Diego Unified will hold a job fair on June 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at district headquarters, 4100 Normal St. The event will offer in-person job interviews for positions throughout the district - from transportation and teaching to clerical and food services. San Diego, CA – On Thursday, June 6th, San Diegans will be gathering at the Hall of Justice to protest the apathy lawmakers show toward gun violence and the countless deaths it causes. The protest will feature speakers from various backgrounds, a march from the Hall of Justice to the Waterfront Park, chants, and an opportunity for participants to share their thoughts and grief.
Mass shootings happen almost daily in the US. In the wake of recent, especially horrifying shootings in Buffalo, NY, and Uvalde, TX, the gun reform movement has been reignited. San Diego joins thousands of cities marching across the US this week.
The march is calling on lawmakers at the federal level to pass gun reform legislation. This includes passing existing bills (such as H.R.3015, H.R.3088, H.R.748, H.R.6380, H.R.130, H.R.5427, H.R.2510, H.R.2377) and drafting further legislation. In addition, participants will be urged to pre/register to vote and do so in November to ensure elected representatives are in support of gun safety.

Two High Schools Celebrate Major Construction Milestones

SAN DIEGO - As a new classroom and library building is complete at one San Diego Unified School District high school, a new performing arts center and student services facility is beginning at another.
On Wednesday, Morse High School Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (AJROTC) students performed in front of San Diego Unified leaders, drama students, and staff, to celebrate the start of construction on their new two-story performing arts and student services building at the campus that serves Skyline, Paradise Hills and other communities.
With demoed portables behind them, the AJROTC performed with drums, a national anthem rendition, and a display of colors.
“Right now, there's a lot of dirt and debris,” said Dr. Cynthia Larkin, Principal of Morse High School. “In time, it will transform into our vision, and the community’s vision, for the theater.”
As part of the third phase of the Whole Site Modernization project, the aging portables will be replaced by the student services and performing arts center that will include a theater with a stage, LED lighting, theatrical orchestra enclosure and more. The new student services building will also be constructed with a secure campus entry, lobby, administrative offices and support spaces.
“This theater follows in the footsteps of the new theaters at Hoover High School, Wilson Middle School, and Patrick Henry High School,” said Russ Sperling, Director of Visual and Performing Arts at San Diego Unified. “Since the creation of those theaters, we’ve seen those students mature and grow as artists. We’re hoping this theater will do the same for Morse High students.”
More than the theater, the project also includes expansion of the student quad area and a new parking lot along 69th Street. Campus safety and security will be enhanced with a new single point of entry, reconfigured parking lot and student drop-off and pick-up area from Tuther Way, more security cameras, perimeter fencing and upgraded campus communications and fire alarm systems.
Earlier this week, Point Loma High School celebrated the completion of its new classroom and library/media center building on Monday, June 6. Like Morse, Point Loma High’s NJROTC and choir performed in front of students, staff, and district leaders to celebrate the school's new three-story, 38,000 square-foot building, renovation of the 200 and 300 buildings and upgrades to the athletic facilities.
“It’s uplifting,” said Kelly Lowry, Principal of Point Loma High School. “Students and teachers were learning and teaching remotely as construction was underway, so you can imagine how these new facilities added to their excitement of returning to the campus for in-person learning. We feel like this is the beginning of a new chapter.”
The new building at Point Loma High features a library/media center on the first floor, ten classrooms each on the second and third floors, and a student quad. Parking capacity was also increased with the reconfiguration of the Clove Street parking lot, which features a secure visitors’ entrance to the campus.
Other improvements include landscape and hardscape improvements, secure perimeter fencing and creation of a single campus entryway, practice fields, and technology upgrades.
Construction on the third phase of the Morse High School Whole Site Modernization is anticipated to complete in Summer 2024. This latest phase complements recent enhancements at Morse, including newly modernized classrooms, a remodeled music building, and present-day signage and graphics, completed in phases one and two.
“It’s wonderful to see the investments we are making at schools like Morse High and Point Loma High,” said Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, Board of Education President for San Diego Unified. “While they are two very diverse campuses, they share one thing in common: they benefit from local bond funds. And the investment shows.”
Funding for the Morse High and Point Loma High projects is made available through Propositions S & Z, and Measure YY, which are local school bond measures approved by San Diego voters to improve San Diego Unified schools.The project is estimated to complete in late 2024. ‘United by Sport’ Mural Unveiled Featuring Two San Diego Baseball Legends
Friendship between Hoover High alum Ted Williams and Padres Tony Gwynn highlighted

SAN DIEGO - A mural of two San Diego baseball icons was unveiled Tuesday at Hoover High School. With the message ‘United by Sport,’ the mural depicts Hall of Famers Ted Williams, a Hoover High School alum, and Padres great Tony Gwynn. Although they were generations apart, the two men developed a friendship through their love of baseball.
District leaders joined representatives from the San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox, artist Jonny Pucci who created the mural, and friends and family members of Tony Gwynn, at the unveiling to reflect on the relationship between the men and the larger role sports can play in social change.
The mural, 16 feet wide by 8 feet high, is featured prominently just steps from Hoover’s Ted Williams Field where the famous alum once played ball.
In his 1966 Hall of Fame acceptance speech, Williams used the opportunity to advocate for the inclusion of Negro Leagues players into baseball’s highest honor. During his playing career, Williams was one of the first Major League players to call for its integration, which didn’t happen until 1947. Williams was one of Tony Gwynn’s heroes, and later, a friend.
“Sports provide the opportunity to learn incredibly valuable life lessons,” said San Diego Unified Board President Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne. “They also allow you to develop lifelong friendships through a common bond. This mural wonderfully captures that essence between two men from different generations and different backgrounds.”
The mural is a bond-funded project from San Diego Unified. Artist Jonny Pucci is a San Diego local who has created works related to the American civil rights movement and other historic moments across the world.
The mural was created by Disorganized Depictions, an agency focused on creating social impact through large-scale murals that also works with schools to teach students how to paint murals and learn real-world career skills including sales, marketing, and design.
To help mark the mural’s unveiling, the San Diego Padres provided free tickets for each player and coach from Hoover High’s baseball and softball teams. They were invited to Monday night’s game against the New York Mets at Petco Park.
