BACKGROUND:

A 2016 National Blue Ribbon and three-time California Distinguished School, La Jolla Elementary School (LJES) offers high-quality teaching and learning, along with a rigorous curriculum that includes GATE Cluster and GATE Seminar programs, an inclusive culture, an active parent community, and art, music, dance, and theater enrichment classes. First opened in 1896, LJES has served the community for 128 years and was ranked the second-best California elementary school in 2022-2024 by the U.S. News and World Report.

In Winter 2020, construction started on LJES’s Whole Site Modernization project, which provided new classrooms, a campus entry, a student services facility, and campus-wide upgrades.  A state-of-the-art facility, the new building creates a secure single point of entry at Girard Avenue and includes 10 general-education classrooms and an engineering and robotics maker space to boost STEAM learning.

Campus-wide upgrades include new kindergarten facilities, modernization of existing classrooms, new collaboration spaces, an outdoor learning area, food service improvements, campus technology upgrades, and an expanded parking lot with a student drop-off and pick-up area.

The playground includes new hardscape play areas and play structures.  As part of this project, the former field was replaced with a new grass playfield with a walking track.

San Diego Unified Highlights Student Public Service Announcements for Social Media Awareness Campaign

Thursday, November 7, 2024

SAN DIEGO - The district’s College, Career & Technical Education Department held a student contest over the past month, designed to raise awareness about the dangers of social media use among students. The district received over 40 submissions. Several students will have their submissions shared on social media, the district’s weekly newsletter, and the district’s website. The contest is part of the district’s Social Media Awareness Campaign to help families understand the risks of social media use by their children. To view the winners, click here

  • What:  Media availability and interview opportunities
  • When: Friday, November 8, 10:00 a.m.
  • Where: Mira Mesa High School - 10510 Marauder Way, San Diego, CA 92126

Background:
To assist families with navigating the risks and impacts of social media, the Board of Education approved a
resolution in July. The district will inform and engage families, students, and educators on responsible social media use, digital literacy, and reducing excessive screen time.  San Diego Unified created family and student websites with a variety of resources and tools.

The Social Media Awareness Campaign coincides with Social Media Kindness Day on Saturday, November 9. The day encourages positive online engagement and reminds students of the possible consequences of posting or resharing unkind social media content. The district will celebrate Social Media Kindness Day by sharing out the content of the PSA winners.
