Hoover High School students get hard-hat tour of Prop. S construction site as part of mentorship program

The ACE Mentor Program has been in existence at Hoover High School for seven years. It is part of a national program, ACE Mentor Program of America, Inc., which is working hard to make sure there are enough architects, construction managers and engineers to fill the industry's needs 10 years from now. ACE is an acronym for architecture, construction, and engineering. The program's mission is to enlighten and increase high school students’ awareness of career opportunities in architecture, construction and engineering and related areas of the design and construction industry through mentoring; and to provide scholarship opportunities for students in an inclusive manner reflective of the diverse school population.
ACE is a unique partnership among industry professionals — architects, interior designers, landscape architects, mechanical, structural, electrical, environmental and civil engineers, construction managers, college and university representatives, and other professionals from related corporations and professional organizations — who work together to attract young people to their professions. Industry professionals volunteer to become mentors to high school students in order to introduce them to the professions and encourage them to pursue studies and careers in these fields. In return, the industry gets a much-needed boost of new talent.
The Proposition S Construction project consists of a permanent two-story, 30,284 square-foot building that will included 20 classrooms. The classroom building’s construction is funded by local Proposition S funds matching state funds via an Overcrowded Relief Grant. This classroom project represents an investment of more than $5.5 million into Hoover High School and the Mid-city community.
On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S, so that San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) could repair, renovate and revitalize 181 schools.
