CAREER-TECH STUDENTS MEET EMPLOYERS AT SHOWCASE
WHAT: College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) Showcase
WHEN: 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, May 20
WHERE: McMillin Event Center, 2875 Dewey Road in the Liberty Station
complex. The event is open to the public.
BACKGROUND
In fields ranging from automotive repair to biotechnology, today's
vocational-education classes are training researchers, support staff and
blue-collar workers for tomorrow's workplace.
The popular College, Career and Technical Education (CCTE) Showcase is an
annual event that brings together students and programs from the vocational
education classrooms around the district.
From culinary arts students strolling with dessert trays, to robots, to
medical technicians, it's a place where prospective employers and community
partners can see first-hand how students are learning real-world skills for
today's jobs.
Corporate partners will also be on hand to talk about how they're involved
with programs at schools throughout the San Diego Unified School District,
and why vocational education is important in training tomorrow's workforce.
Today's college, career and technical education programs train all students,
ranging from those who will enter the job market right after high school, to
students who will complete a PhD. in their chosen field. For example,
programs at the Stanley E. Foster Construction Tech Academy at Kearny High
School can graduate with the skills to work in a construction-industry job,
as well as go on to an advanced degree in a field such as architecture or
engineering. The career-technical class gives both important hands-on
training from San Diego's experts in their field.
INTERVIEWS/PHOTOS: Students demonstrating everything from robots, to
collecting basic medical information, to preparing and serving gourmet hors
d'oeuvres. Interim Superintendent Bill Kowba will be available for
interviews, as will students, teaachers and local business partners. Members
of the Board of Education may also be in attendance and available for
interviews.
