11 -- Veterans Day, all schools and offices closed.

13 -- Pt. Loma High 85th Anniversary Gala, 6 p.m., Liberty Station
Conference Center, 2600 Laning Road (92106). Point Loma High School will
celebrate 85 years of educational excellence with a weekend of events
including the "Once a Pointer, Always a Pointer" gala and auction. Contact:

13 -- Galadash, Benefitting Point Loma High School. 2335 Chatsworth Blvd.
(92106), starting 8 a.m. It's free, fun, and 85. That's a free fun 5-K
Run/Walk through the streets of Point Loma to celebrate the 85th anniversary
of Point Loma High. Strollers and dogs welcome. Start and finish at the
school stadium. Commemorative event T-shirts available with $10 donation to
the PLHS Men's/Women's Cross Country Teams. For more information, contact

13 -- Family Fun Day and Rummage Sale, supporting the Madison High School
Community of Schools, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Madison High School, 4833 Doliva
Drive (92117). Bag some fun and help support 10 schools in the Madison
community! Event will showcase talent from local schools and raise money for
scholarships, school clubs and academic needs. No early admission. Featuring
great shopping, good food, entertainment from local schools and booths from
local businesses that support the schools. Sponsored by PTSA at seven
elementary schools: Field, Hawthorne, Holmes, Lafayette,
Lindbergh/Schweitzer, Sequoia and Whitman. Also sponsored by two middle
schools: Creative Performing Media Arts (CPMA) and Innovation Middle as well

13 -- Sibshop Special Education Workshop, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Point Loma
United Methodist Church, 1984 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. (92107). Program geared
for the brothers and sisters of students with special needs and to help the
family be better connected with the school experience. Contact: Pat Moulton,

13 -- 21st Century Education Symposium, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Handlery Hotel
& Resort, Presidio Ballroom:, 950 Hotel Circle North (92108). Geared to
teachers, administrators, service providers and parents. Featuring parenting
experts leading discussions on improving educational outcomes for students,
with focus on disabled student education. Fees: $40 for DSA members, $50

17 -- Teen Truth Live, 7:40 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thurgood Marshall Middle School,
9700 Avenue of Nations (92131). The full day assembly will focus on
discussion of bullying, positive body image, drugs and alcohol abuse. The
goal is to help students stand up to peer pressure and choose smart behavior

22-26 -- Thanksgiving Break. All schools closed. Some district offices will
be open Nov. 22-24. All schools and offices are closed Nov. 25-26.

* 25 -- House of Giving Thanksgiving Day Event, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., House of
Blues, 1055 5th Ave. (92101). A free Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving Day
at the House of Blues for families from five of our district's schools.
Admission is by ticket only and families can get free tickets through their
schools. Flyers will be given to students in the schools giving details on
how to obtain tickets. Feeding America is supplying the food and the House

* 8 -- Madison High School Automotive Facility Grand Opening, 10 a.m.,
Madison High School, 4833 Doliva Dr. (92117). Grand opening of the new
automotive training facility, built with funds from San Diego Unified's

* 11 -- San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts Open House and
Information Session, 8:45 a.m., San Diego School of Creative and Performing
Arts, 2425 Dusk Drive. (92139). Featuring student art, theatrical and band
performances, this event is for interested students and families presenting
information about what SCPA magnet school has to offer and the admission
process. Event features exhibit of current student art in the Little
Theater. The first 25 attendants win free tickets to that day's 2 p.m.
showing of student presentation, "Scrooge, The Musical"; next 25 attendants

* 13 -- Construction Tech Academy Facility Grand Opening, 10:30 a.m., Kearny

new facility, built with funds from San Diego Unified's Prop. S and

February

14 -- Ladies of Science in the City, 11 a.m., Serra High School, 5156 Santo
Rd. (92124). UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and 30 members of the Ladies of
Science program will visit with students and perform a pickle experiment
conducted by UCSD chemistry professor James Whitesell (the chancellor's

March

19-26 -- San Diego Science Festival, on SDUSD campuses and in various
locations around San Diego. More than 75,000 students, parents, scientists,
educators, and other community members are anticipated to take part in this
year's activities, with over 30,000 expected on Expo Day, a
free-to-the-community event. Contact: Mary Jo Ball, San Diego Science

public.

Tuesday: Powwow Workshop Soaring Eagles, 6 p.m. Ballard Parent Center, 2375
Congress Ave. (92110). Enjoy free potluck supper and practice for Soaring
Eagles student dance troupe, and pitch in to help the children learn
history, heritage and performance lessons. Part of Parent Outreach's
