MEDIA CALENDAR -- Upcoming Events in the San Diego Unified School District

Your coverage is invited of any of the following upcoming events on the
campuses of the San Diego Unified School District. For more items, check
out the calendar on the front of the district website at www.sandi.net.

Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that
means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

MAY

Through May 25, SCPA Young Art 2013: The Story of Me, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
Tuesday through Sunday, The San Diego Museum of Art, Balboa Park. Contact:

18 -- JROTC Joint Brigade Awards and Review Ceremony, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.,
Morse High School football field, 6905 Skyline Dr. (92114). This is the
school year's culminating event for JROTC students in the 13 high school
programs. It's a very impressive site seeing all the students the
traditional Pass and Review; families will be there; the kids will receive
awards. For many students it's a bittersweet day, as they;ll be headed
onto college next year. Not all will pursue ROTC in college or a military
career, so for some their "discharge" is just around the corner. Contact:

19 -- Loma Portal Home and Garden Tour and Craft Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
Loma Portal neighborhood. Tour of local neighborhood and sale benefits
Loma Portal Elementary School. Contact: Dominique Miller Mimno,
Dominique.m@cox.net. Admission $20 in advance, $25 day of tour. Open to
the public.

21 -- San Diego Unified's 2013 Classified Employee of the Year, 5 p.m.,
Mann Middle School, 4345 54th St. (92115). The district's annual
Classified Employee of the Year celebration in which school and district
facility employees are recognized. One individual will be recognized as
the district's Classified Employee of the Year for 2013. Contact: Jennifer

scheduled Board of Education meeting; open to the public.

* 22 -- News Conference, Broad Prize for Urban Education, 10:30 a.m.,
Kearny High School of Digital Media Design, 7651 Wellington St. (92111).
Tour classrooms; interview Broad Prize experts and San Diego Unified Board
of Education members and staff. Superintendent Bill Kowba, Superintendent
Designate Cindy Marten, Board of Education President Dr. John Lee Evans,
panel of national education experts, and Kearny School of Digital Media
and Design Principal Cheryl Hibbeln are scheduled to be available. Broad
Prize staff will be at Kearny as part of the review to determine which
school district receives the $500,000 scholarship prize. Contact: Linda

22 -- GATE Presents Dr. Richard Cash, ³Teaching with the Brain in Mind,² 4
p.m., Eugene Brucker Education Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal St. (92103).
Richard M. Cash, Ed.D. is the Director of Gifted and Talented Programs,
K-12, for the Bloomington Minnesota Public Schools. Richard taught primary
and middle grades in an urban elementary school for gifted children.
Richard also worked for many years as a children's theater director. The
GATE Distinguished Lecture Series brings nationally recognized speakers to
San Diego to talk about gifted and talented education (GATE). Contact:

22-23 -- San Diego Regional Model United Nations, all day, Joan B. Kroc
Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego, 5998
Alcalá Park (92110). The San Diego Regional Junior Model United Nations
Conference aims to spread awareness of international issues and the spirit
of diplomacy to high school and middle school students through a two-day
simulation. This conference is targeted specifically to grades 6-9 with
the intent of encouraging the participation of novice delegates. Contact:

27 -- Memorial Day. All schools and offices closed.

29 -- Correia Middle School Public Scoping Meeting, 6:30 p.m., Correia
Middle School, 4302 Valeta St. (92107). solicit input from stakeholders as
to the scope and content of the Draft EIR for an upgraded sports complex
on the existing Correia Middle School campus. Contact: Cynthia Reed

31 -- Curie Elementary School Dad's Club Lunch, noon, Curie Elementary
School, 4080 Governor Dr. (92122). Curie dads will be bringing their
lunches with them when they have the midday meal with their sons and
daughters. Dad's Clubs are a program in many San Diego Unified Schools
that encourage fathers and male guardians to get involved. Contact:

*31 -- New Roosevelt Middle School Tennis & Basketball Court
Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony, 10-10:40 a.m., Roosevelt Middle School, 3366 Park
Blvd. (92103). The Greater San Diego City Tennis Council (GSDCTC) invites
you to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Roosevelt Middle School's recently
renovated tennis and basketball courts. Join school leaders, San Diego
Unified School District (SDUSD) representatives, community leaders,
students, parents, staff, community members and project partners as we
celebrate this momentous occasion. Partners include: Bill Walton, Jr. Seau

JUNE

1 -- Benefit concert for Correia Middle School Music Program, 2-7 p.m.,
Humphreys Backstage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Dr. (92106). Young and old
area talent will assemble to support the school, a collaboration between
the First Friday Music Club and Correia Instrumental Music Association.

1 -- Silver Gate Elementary School Beautification Day, 9 a.m. to noon,
Silver Gate Elementary School, 1499 Venice St. (92107). Members of the Pt.
Loma Community Presbyterian Church and Silver Gate families will be
sprucing up the school's kindergarten area. Contact: Sandra McClure,

21-26 -- The JROTC Leadership Camp, Forest Lawn Scout Reservation, Cedar
Glenn, CA. The top one-fourth of cadets from around Southern California
meeting up for a week of training in leadership and adaptability. The camp
also offers cadets high adventure training in the areas of land
navigation, rappelling, archery, horsemanship, water safety, and
confidence building courses. Contact: David Guzman, 858-496-8203. Not open
to the public.

JULY

4 -- Independence Day, all schools and offices closed.

19 -- Last day of school for year-round schools.

AUGUST

26 -- Most school offices reopen for enrolling new students.

SEPTEMBER
