San Diego Unified partners with Tijuana School District for 9th Annual Bi-National Spelling Bee
WHEN: Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 4 – 6 p.m.
WHAT: 9th annual bi-national spelling bee between elementary school students from San Diego and Mexico on Thursday, June 23.
WHERE: San Diego Unified Education Center auditorium, 4100 Normal Street, San Diego (92103)
DETAILS: The Bi-National Spelling bee is organized to enhance language and cultural learning among first through sixth-grade students and serve as a model for future cross-cultural events.
Over 40 students from 10 participating schools will compete in the event, with one participant per grade level representing each of the 10 schools. The spelling bee will be conducted in English. Six individual contests will be held by grade level and trophies will be awarded to the first three finishers in each grade. Certificates of participation from will be awarded to each participant.
Participating schools include:
San Diego Unified: Rodriguez Elementary, Kimbrough Elementary, Golden Hill Elementary, Perkins Elementary, Burbank Elementary.
Mexico: Primaria Municipal Carlos Villalvazo T.M., Primaria Municipal Club de Leones T.M., Primaria Municipal Club Soroptimista T.M., Primaria Municipal Emma Anchondo Bustamante T.M., Primaria Municipal Manuel Quiros Labastida T.M.
The Bi-National Spelling bee is organized by Perkins Elementary Principal Fernando Hernandez and Rositere Santana of the Tijuana school district. A representative from the office of the Mayor of Tijuana will be in attendance along with a representative from the office of Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez in support of the students.
Spelling Bee organizers, supporters, teachers and participating students will be available for interviews.
