San Diego Unified School District News Release – Grant K-8 a Thriving Neighborhood School After $12 Million Construction and Renovation Project

SAN DIEGO – Celebrating the 150th anniversary of President Ulysses S. Grant's election win in 1868, the Grant K-8 community will come together Thursday, September 7 at 5:30 p.m. to mark the grand opening of brand new facilities at the school. Featuring a student band and a student performance of the national anthem, students and district leaders will cut a red ribbon to formally open the brand new two-story classroom building at the neighborhood school.

While Grant K-8 already succeeds in key areas such as academics, Visual and Performing Arts, student technology, health and wellness, and civic engagement, this $12,000,000 project marked a significant step forward in the district's Vision 2020 goal to have a neighborhood school in every neighborhood. These new facilities will enhance student growth and achievement by providing modern, state-of-the-art learning settings.

"As excited as we are about this beautiful new facility, we are even more excited about the opportunities the students who learn here will have," said district Superintendent Cindy Marten. She adds, "As with all San Diego Unified schools, they will have access to rigorous academic courses, including seminar, and access to the arts and music, access to outstanding health and wellness opportunities, the latest technology, and opportunities to change the world they live in by participating in community service clubs and great civics learning programs like the Model UN."

The new facility is an 8,400 SF, two-story, eight-classroom building with a data/technology room. Within this building are 5,800 SF of new cafeteria, food service, lunch court, educational support, and storage. To make way for the new building, eight portable classrooms were removed, and five relocatable classrooms were repurposed on campus. The new parking lot provides 42 spaces, of which 37 are standard, three are designated for fuel efficient vehicles, and two are accessible. The lot also includes a new kindergarten drop off area and new landscaping.

Improvements to existing buildings include classroom air conditioning, a new intercom system, and fire alarm system. The site received an electrical service upgrade, a new eight-inch water line for fire safety, sewer improvements, and storm water improvements. The scope of work was developed with consideration for educational and facility needs, and with public comment received during a series of community meetings.

This project is funded by San Diego Unified School District's Propositions S and Z, which are local bond measures approved by San Diego voters to repair, renovate and revitalize neighborhood schools. In addition to renovation and replacement, bond projects include classroom technology, facilities to support College, Career and Technical Education, classroom air conditioning, safety and security upgrades, and other facilities improvements at traditional and public charter schools throughout San Diego Unified. Prop. S is a 23-year capital facilities program that is funded by a $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 4, 2008. Prop. Z is a 15-year capital facilities program funded by a $2.8 billion general obligation bond measure passed November 6, 2012. By law, the funds cannot be used for teachers' or school administrators' salaries, nor can they be used for maintenance or operations.
