Board Trustee John Lee Evans to Present Report on Vision 2020, Propose Resolution to Begin Development of Vision 2030 at Tuesday’s Board Of Education Meeting

Board Trustee John Lee Evans will bring forward a report at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting he authored on the progress of Vision 2020, the district’s long-term plan for student achievement created in 2009.

In that report, Evans highlights five areas of major change from 2008 to 2018, which include:

1.    Major high school transformation giving students access to a variety of career pathways, increased opportunities to enroll in AP and college courses on all high school campuses, promoting offer new career technical courses, more rigorous high school graduation requirements with a rising graduation rate for a more meaningful diploma and a narrowing of the achievement/opportunity gap for all groups of students (more students from all groups prepared for college and career)

2.    Preparing all students for a global society with world language classes for all: high school courses to meet college language requirement, speeding up the rate at which non-native speakers are becoming proficient in English, giving students credit if they can demonstrate proficiency in a native language other than English, and increasing opportunities for students to participate in language immersion programs

3.    Increasing teacher effectiveness by developing a growth and development model for teachers that will replace the old evaluation system and an increase across the district in the number of teachers participating in Professional Learning Communities with their peers

4.    Bringing 21st century technology into every classroom for every student for improvement and customization of instruction

5.    A facilities repair and renovation program to modernize our schools after decades of neglect, including new classroom buildings, collaborative learning spaces, PE/athletic facilities, arts and music facilities, safety upgrades and air conditioning in every classroom before 2020

Following the presentation, Trustee Evans will introduce a resolution proposing that the “district begin a school and community input process in the period leading up to 2020 that will determine the needs of our students under a new and updated Vision 2030, which will serve as a long term accountability plan for the district in the next decade.”

Later this month, the Board of Education will send out a brief survey to gauge stakeholder interest relating to district goals for the future.
