San Diego High School To Host 2nd Annual Binational "Balboa Cup" Soccer Tournament
This tournament will feature boys and girls teams comprised of student athletes from San Diego and Tijuana High Schools.
In collaboration with the San Diego Unified School District and School Board Trustee Dr. Mike McQuary, the San Diego International Sister Cities Association will host the 2nd annual international Sister City All Star Soccer Tournament at San Diego High School's Balboa Stadium.
Soccer star Landon Donovan will join student athletes from schools throughout the county, including San Diego High School and Hoover High School, as they take part in "Balboa Cup" on July 16 and 17, between Tijuana and San Diego.
The tournament will kickoff with opening ceremonies that will include an exchange of flags presentation, along with a musical performance. Media are invited to cover the soccer matches in both cities. In San Diego, at halftime, Cross Border Express will present an in-kind donation to the Bridge to the Future Foundation, to support the continued cross-cultural efforts of all the organizations involved.
More details will be available at a press conference on July 12 at San Diego High School.
"This bi-national student soccer tournament is another way that we can break down barriers between people through sports diplomacy," said McQuary, SanDISCA Board President and San Diego Unified school board member.
The City of San Diego has 16 official international relationships in 15 countries around the globe. President Dwight Eisenhower started Sister Cities International in 1957 to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation one individual, one community at a time.
