Horton Elementary students to receive backpacks, school supplies thanks to Ashford University                         

 

WHAT: Students at Horton Elementary School will receive backpacks and school supplies thanks to a generous $10,000 grant from Ashford University. The grant was given to the district's Children and Youth in Transition Department, which selected Horton to receive the backpacks and supplies. An assembly will be held where all students will receive their backpacks and supplies. Supplies include notebooks, pens, markers and more.

San Diego students get lifesaving training in CPR: County gives $100,000 to help Heart Association, San Diego Unified train students

County Supervisor Ron Roberts will join San Diego Unified School Superintendent Cindy Marten tomorrow to announce an effort to train local students in lifesaving CPR skills. The unique partnership has been made possible by a $100,000 county grant and collaboration with the American Heart Association.

Note to Editors: Immediately following the announcement tomorrow morning, elementary school students will demonstrate what they are learning on CPR practice mannequins.

Who: County Supervisor Ron Roberts, San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten and the American Heart Association, San Diego Chapter Executive Director, Jennifer Sobotka, and students from Adams Elementary School

Urban Education Expert to Speak at Community Meeting: Dr. Pedro Noguera and San Diego Unified leaders to discuss empowering the next generation of learners

 

WHAT: Dr. Pedro Noguera, one of the country’s most prominent professors of urban education, will join leaders of the San Diego Unified School District for a community meeting to discuss how parents and schools can use equity and action to empower the next generation of African, African-American and Latino learners. All community members are welcome to attend this event. Childcare and translators will be available, and light refreshments will be served.

DETAILS: Noguera is a sociologist whose research focuses on topics such as the effect of social and economic conditions on schools, demographic trends in academic achievement, and policies that promote student success regardless of their race or social class. He regularly appears as a commentator on education issues on CNN, MSNBC, NPR and other national news outlets. He has authored numerous books, including his most recent, “Excellence through Equity,” which highlights the strategies real-world educators are using to equitably provide the resources and support each student needs to reach his or her full potential. Noguera is currently a professor of education at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.
