NEWS RELEASE -- Media Calendar from the San Diego Unified School District,
August 30, 2013

Your coverage is invited of any of the following upcoming events on the
campuses of the San Diego Unified School District. For more items, check
out the calendar on the front of the district website at www.sandi.net.

Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that
means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public
is not. These are generally items during the school day.

SEPTEMBER

3 -- First day of school.

3 -- Morning media first day of school, 5-9 a.m., Mission Bay High School,
2475 Grand Ave. (92109). Live trucks will be able to pull in beginning at
4:30 a.m. Supt. Cindy Marten will be available for interviews from 6-7
a.m., students will be in the Buc Cafe (a mini Starbucks-like snack bar),
the Bucs girls volleyball team will be practicing and other events.

6 -- Family Friday, 9:10 a.m., Holmes Elementary School, 4902 Mt. Ararat
Dr. (92111). Parents and guardians are invited to meet with Principal
Jonathan Saipe to get updates about the school and district. Following the
meeting with the principal, parents can tour their child's classroom to
read or participate in a learning activity. Contact: Jonathan Saipe,

9 -- Groundbreaking, Jonas Salk Elementary School, 10 a.m., Salk
Elementary School site, 7825 Flanders Drive (92126). Ceremony marks the
start of construction for the awaited school in Mira Mesa. Community
members, district leaders, local government officials will join family and
friends of Jonas Salk for this celebratory event. Contact: Cynthia Reed

11 -- Whole Foods and local youth team up for 9/11 ³Kids Day of Service,²
noon to 3 p.m., Montgomery Middle School, 2470 Ulric St. (92111). Students
at Montgomery will welcome staff from Whole Foods Market as well as
students from Carson and Linda Vista elementary schools to help spruce up
the Montgomery garden. Whole Foods is bringing a portable salad bar to get
students, teachers and community members energized before they plant fall
vegetables, learn about composting and paint garden signs in five

19 -- Dedication of broadcast communications facility, 10:30 a.m., Mira
Mesa High School, 10510 Reagan Road (92126). New, state-of-the-art
television studio to be used for career-technical education broadcast
journalism classes and other education programs. Contact: Cynthia

23-27 -- Student Body Presidents' Anti-Bullying Week, high schools around
San Diego Unified. The Council of ASB Presidents has set this week for
their schools to highlight ways to confront biases, stereotypes, bullying
and cyber-bullying. Contact: Leonard Thompson, Office of Race Human
Relations and Advocacy, 858-490-8678. Not open to the public.

24 -- Lincoln High Back to School Night and Title I Parent Meeting, 5:30
p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777 Imperial Ave. (92113). Find out about all
the great things going on at Lincoln High this year. Contact: Dr. Esther

27 -- Barnard Asian Pacific Language Academy Grand Opening Celebration, 8
a.m., new Barnard Elementary School, 2445 Fogg Street (92109). Barnard's
acclaimed Asian Pacific Language Academy has moved to larger quarters in
Pacific Beach, near Mission Bay High School. Chinese dancers, dignitaries
and students will be participating in the formal dedication of the
facility, the updated former Bayview Terrace Elementary School. Contact:

27 -- Madison High School School of the Arts Back-To-School Barbecue,
5-6:30 p.m., Madison High School, 4833 Doliva Dr. (92117). Meet your
fellow School of the Arts parents and learn all about the award-winning
