MEDIA ADVISORY -- 2 p.m. Board President News Conference discusses new School Success and Opportunity Act

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, January 6, 2014

2 P.M. BOARD PRESIDENT NEWS CONFERENCE DISCUSSES NEW SCHOOL SUCCESS AND
OPPORTUNITY ACT

WHAT: News conference with Kevin Beiser, Board of Education President, to
discuss San Diego Unified's compliance with new California pupil rights
law, the School Success and Opportunity Act, AB 1266.

WHEN: 2 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, auditorium, Eugene Brucker
Education Center, 4100 Normal St. (92103).

DETAILS: Board of Education President Kevin Beiser will discuss the new
School Success and Opportunity Act and San Diego Unified's plans for
implementing it. Since September, a multi-disciplinary team has been
working on the formal implementation of the law, revising current policies
for Board of Education consideration in coming weeks. Current practices
ensure the that the rights of all children in San Diego Unified schools
are respected and protected. The process involves not only the student,
but parents, counselors and staff.

Parents should not be concerned that the new law means that a student can
use any restroom or other on-campus, gender-specific facility; there will
continue to be a process with families to determine what is the
appropriate course of action for that child.
