NOVEMBER

 

6 -- Preview of the Musical RENT, 2:30 p.m., San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Ole Kittleson Little Theater, 2425 Dusk Drive (92139). Students will be staging the performance in-the-round. Performances run through Nov. 15. Open to the public with ticket purchase: $8 for adults; $5 for students, military and seniors. *10 -- Autism Spectrum & Related Social Disorders: Practical Strategies for Home and Community, 7:30-8 p.m., Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress Street (92110). An evening for parents, families and community members linking research to evidenced-based educational practice. Presentor: Emily Rubin, MS, CCC-SLP. Child Care Available. Open to the public. 12 -- Community Development Meeting, 5:30-7 p.m., Scripps Mesa Conference Center, 10380 Spring Canyon Road, San Diego (92110). 16 -- Kakehashi Project Welcome Reception, 5-7 p.m., Japanese Friendship Garden, Balboa Park (92103). Students from the Henry High School Japanese Program are holding a reception for exchange students from the Okinawa Prefecture who participated in the Kakehashi Project. The objective of the program is to promote deeper mutual understanding, enable future leaders to form networks and help young people develop wider perspectives to encourage active roles at the global level in the future. *18 -- Dedication and Open House of New Performing Arts Center, 9:30-10:30 a.m., Creative Performing Media Arts (CPMA) Middle School, 5050 Conrad Avenue (92117). The community is invited to attend the ceremony for a preview of the school’s new state-of-the-art performing arts center, built with tax payer approved bond funds. *18 -- Grand Opening and Ribbon-cutting Ceremony, 1:15-2:15 p.m., Clairemont High School, 4150 Ute Drive (92117).  San Diego Chargers players and representatives will join school officials and students at the grand opening of the high school’s new weight room and sand volleyball court made possible through a grant from the SD Chargers Foundation. 19 -- 17th Annual Garfield High School Thanksgiving Gourmet Luncheon, 12 noon, The Prado restaurant, Balboa Park. Culinary Arts and Hospitality students from Garfield High School along with chefs from the The Prado restaurant will prepare a gourmet Thanksgiving lunch buffet. 20 -- National Parent Involvement Day. The San Diego Unified Council of PTAs is partnering with the district to celebrate National Parent Involvement Day. *20 -- Second Annual San Diego Unified Fiddlin’ Festival, 7 p.m., Lewis Middle School, 5170 Greenbrier Avenue (92120). This fundraiser for the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department brings together musicians from the district and the CA State Old Time Fiddler’s Association. Open to the public. 24-28 -- Thanksgiving Break. All school sites will be closed.

 

DECEMBER

 

1 -- 2014 State of the District Address, 4:30 p.m. reception, 5:15 p.m. program, Lewis Middle School, 5170 Greenbrier Ave. (92120). This annual event presented by the Board of Education and the Superintendent provides an update on the district’s progress and plans for the future. Free. Open to the public.
