School Counselors Summit: Navigating the College Process; Mapping strategies for achieving objectives of the Reach Higher Initiative
WHAT: San Diego Unified School District school counselors will participate in a Summer Institute on “Navigating the College Process” – a three-day series of workshops bringing together district school counselors and administrators from the University of California San Diego (UCSD), San Diego State University (SDSU), the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) and the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) to improve the capacity of district school counselors in navigating the college admissions process for their students.
WHEN: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, August 3-5, 2015
WHERE: Monday and Wednesday, August 3 & 5, 2015 – UCSD Price Center Ballroom East; Tuesday, August 4, 2015, SDSU Templo Mayor, Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union
DETAILS: School counselors from the district's high school campuses will participate, along with school counselors from several of the district elementary and middle schools. One of many objectives will be mapping out strategies for achieving objectives of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative.
The Reach Higher initiative will help make sure all students understand what they need to complete their education, including:
- Exposing students to college and career opportunities
- Understanding financial aid eligibility that can make affording college a reality
- Encouraging academic planning and summer learning opportunities
- Supporting high school counselors who can help more kids get into college
