FREE MILITARY APPRECIATION EVENT TO HELP FAMILIES, CHILDREN PREPARE FOR NEW SCHOOL YEAR

WHAT:  San Diego Unified School District serves more than 11,000 military-connected students each year. Many are new to the area and will be entering a new school in San Diego Unified on  September 8, 2015.  To help make the transition easier for these families and get a head-start on back-to-school preparations, the district, along with the Navy and the Marine Corp, is hosting a Military Enrollment and Family Appreciation Event. The event, also supported by International Relief, is free and open to all military families living within the service boundaries of San Diego Unified School District. All attendees will receive a free lunch and students will receive free school supplies.

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015
7-9 a.m.    Hundreds of volunteers from the Navy, Marine Corps and International Relief will help staff set-up for the event.

9 a.m. to 2 p.m.   Hundreds of families will have the opportunity to enroll their student(s), gather helpful information from military and community organizations and district departments; participate in activities and games; and receive free required immunizations if needed.

9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.   Marine Corps Strolling Band will perform

10 a.m., noon, 1 p.m.  Opportunity drawings for military families in attendance

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.   Free BBQ Lunch prepared and served by San Diego Unified Food Services

12 p.m. Noon:  Recognition Ceremony with San Diego Unified Supt. Cindy Marten; Col. John P. Farnam, outgoing Commanding Officer, and Col. J. Woodworth, incoming Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar; and Capt. Curt Jones, Commanding Officer, Naval Base San Diego

WHERE: Serra High School, 5156 Santo Road, San Diego (92124)

INTERVIEWS: Military families, personnel and volunteers; staff and volunteers from San Diego Unified; and representatives from more than 50 military and community agencies. Supt. Cindy Marten, Col. John P. Farnam, Col. J. Woodworth and Capt. Curt Jones will be available between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for interviews

VISUALS: Outdoor activities with children, families and military personnel including face-painting, tug-of-war, obstacle course, sack race and art projects.  School Police K9 Officer Blitz will be in attendance along with a clown making balloon animals.
