Tuesday 11/14 - 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Visual and Performing Arts Foundation Announcement
The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education has authorized the Visual and Performing Arts Department (VAPA) to launch a new non-profit foundation that will serve to further enhance arts education programs in the district. The new non-profit will offer visual and performing arts scholarships for students and grants for teachers starting in the 2018-2019 school year. The VAPA Foundation intends to enhance the quality of arts education within the San Diego Unified community by promoting artistic literacy, increasing professional development of teachers, investing in musical instruments, and collaborating with community arts organizations to create additional opportunities for students, grades TK–12, to access education experiences related to the visual and performing arts.

Wednesday 11/15 - 6:00 p.m. 3rd Annual True Blue Buddies Annual Thanksgiving Dinner
Third-through fifth-grade students from Dewey Elementary will take part in a special Thanksgiving dinner with their "True Blue Buddies" School Police Officer mentors. The dinner is a part of a yearlong mentorship program that includes various events over the school year, including educational workshops and holiday gatherings. The primary goal of the mentorship program is to provide support through small group mentoring, as well as to help facilitate and build positive relationships with Police Officers at an early age. Participants were selected based on need, and include students from low-income families, military families and homeless families.

Thursday 11/16 - 12:00 p.m. 20th Annual Garfield High School Thanksgiving Luncheon in the Prado
20th Annual Garfield High School thanksgiving Gourmet Luncheon is being prepared by the
Garfield High School ROP Culinary Arts and Hospitality, Tourism and recreation students, along with the chefs from The Prado restaurant. This is a fundraiser sponsored by the Garfield High School Foundation. Proceeds will benefit the students of Garfield High School. Tickets are
$50 in advance or $60 at the door. For more information and

Thursday 11/16 - 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. TBD Military Thanksgiving Event
The YMCA is teaming up with Hancock Elementary School to help serve those who serve us! Hancock Elementary serves a large number of military families - a majority have at least one parent deployed. The Y is celebrating them through a community BBQ including games, fun, crafts and more, PLUS providing the first 300 families with bags of food for Thanksgiving, courtesy of Sprouts. The Y leads the school's PE program and enjoys giving back to the families who sacrifice so much for our freedom.
