Johnson Elementary School to Receive $5,000 Education Grant from Barona Band of Mission Indians; State Senator Toni Atkins Nominated the School for the Opportunity to Apply

WHAT: The Barona Band of Mission Indians is awarding a $5,000 education grant to Johnson Elementary Magnet for STEM. Johnson Elementary was nominated by State Senator Toni Atkins to apply for the grant. Only applicants with the endorsement of a State Legislator are eligible to apply.

WHEN: Monday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 a.m.

WHERE: Johnson Elementary School, 1355 Kelton Rd., 92114

DETAILS: The award ceremony will take place during the school’s morning assembly on the blacktop with students and parents attending. Speakers include State Senator Toni Atkins; Sheilla Alvarez, Director of Government Affairs, Barona Band of Mission Indians; and Johnson Elementary Principal Tracey Jenkins-Martin. School Board Vice President Sharon Whitehurst-Payne will also be in attendance.

BACKGROUND: The Barona Education Grant Program funds materials that promote academic improvement, and will benefit current and future students, including books and computers. Each grant is $5,000, and K-12 schools can apply once per year. One grant is awarded per State Executive Office holder, Senator or Assembly member.

Johnson Elementary plans to use the grant to purchase “Swivls,” which are video recording equipment that will help enhance student engagement and learning. “Swivls” will enable students to record projects and provide feedback to each other during group or individual student work times as well as help students record, produce and edit podcasts about their learning.
