Monday, Oct. 1 through Nov. 14, 2018 – School Choice Application Window Opens
Monday, October 1, marked the start of the school choice window for the 2019-20 school year. School Choice gives students the chance to enroll next year in magnet programs or schools outside their neighborhood boundaries. The program is open to all existing San Diego Unified students, as well as out of district students, and students attending schools in other settings such as private or charter schools. Each year, more than 10,000 area students apply for the choice program to attend one of the 170 schools in San Diego Unified. Last year, approximately 75 percent of all students were seated at one of their three choices of schools.

Thursday, Oct. 4, 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. - No Place for Hate Leadership Conference hosted by the Anti-Defamation League
Several San Diego Unified schools are participating in the conference, including students and adults from Wangenheim and Roosevelt middle schools, as well as schools in the La Jolla Cluster. The conference will feature keynote speaker Yehudah Webster, a community organizer, political activist and board member for Jews for Racial & Economic Justice, and sessions such as “Being Student Leaders,” “Empowering Student Leaders,” and “Responding to Incidents of Hate and Bias.” For more information, visit the ADL website. https://sandiego.adl.org/event/2018-no-place-for-hate-leadership-conference-october-4-2018/

Thursday, Oct. 4, 4:30-5 p.m. - Chancellor's Associates Scholars Program Kickoff Event
UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla and San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten will be on hand to welcome and congratulate more than 250 new undergraduate students who have received the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship, a program established to support local students, including those from Lincoln and Hoover high schools —who will be the first in their families to attend college. The UC San Diego Academic Year Kickoff is a special event to welcome new and returning students who have received a Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship, which was created by Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla to improve the pathway for local qualified students from all backgrounds to achieve a higher education at UC San Diego. More than 850 students have benefited from the program since it was launched in 2013.

Sunday, Oct. 7 12-2:30 p.m. – Ocean Discovery’s Living Lab Grand Opening
The San Diego Unified School District and Ocean Discovery Institute are ready to open the doors of the Living Lab, a state-of-the-art science education facility, located in a canyon in the Pueblo Watershed in the heart of City Heights. The Living Lab is a place where area students and their families can participate in free hands-on science programs during school, after school and on weekends. The Living Lab will enable Ocean Discovery Institute to reach 10,000 children in the Hoover Cluster with marine science programming and expand the role of families, teachers, and mentors. Most importantly, the Living Lab will encourage City Heights youth to further explore science and conservation as they grow their educational and career goals.
