San Diego Unified to Host Community Engagement Forum to Help Select Next Superintendent



On Saturday, February 26, members of the public will have an opportunity to help select the next superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District by participating in a community forum with the superintendent finalists.

WHAT: San Diego Unified will host a public forum for community members to get to know the superintendent finalists and provide feedback ahead of the Board of Education's formal appointment of the permanent Superintendent in March. The forum will include the opportunity to ask questions and engage with the Superintendent finalists, in-person and virtually. The two finalists are Dr. Susan Enfield, Superintendent for Highline Public Schools; and Dr. Lamont Jackson, Interim Superintendent for San Diego Unified. BACKGROUND: The Board of Education adopted a Superintendent Recruitment and Selection Process one year ago. The process included a plan for community engagement, allowing for multiple town halls, community meetings and other opportunities for the public to actively participate in the selection process. The National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) was contracted to do this work. San Diego Unified offered 34 community input opportunities to the public between July and September. A 48-member Superintendent Search Advisory Committee appointed by the Board guided the process. The Advisory Committee reflects the diversity of San Diego Unified students and the San Diego Community, and includes members from nonprofit and civic organizations, elected officials, student, staff and parent organizations; and educational institutions. The Advisory Committee reviewed all applications from candidates who met the minimum qualifications and recommended up to 10 candidates to be interviewed by the Board. The Board appointed Dr. Jackson as Interim Superintendent after former Superintendent Cindy Marten was named Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education.
