San Diego Unified to Raise Black Lives Matter Flag in Honor of Black History Month

WHAT: In celebration of Black History Month in February, students from the San Unified School District will raise the official Black Lives Matter flag at the district’s central office. District leaders, educators, and members of the Board of Education will attend and support this event. The ceremony represents San Diego Unified’s commitment to uplifting the voices of Black students and teaching about important cultural historical events.

BACKGROUND: This year, in honor of Black History Month, San Diego Unified students will raise the Black Lives Matter flag to signify the district’s commitment to creating a just, equitable, and empathetic world. It is a symbol of inclusion, especially for Black students, staff, families, and communities. The flag-raising ceremony will be entirely student-led, featuring students from across the district.

 

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Board of Education adopted a resolution honoring Black History Month and recognizing the tremendous contributions made by Black Americans to the development of our culture, communities, and nation. The Black History Month Resource Guide from the Equity & Belonging Division includes resources for educators, students, and families to honor and observe Black History Month.
