WHEN: Monday, Sept. 30, 9:30 a.m.

WHERE: Target, 3424 College Grove Ave., San Diego, 92115.

BACKGROUND: More than a dozen students from Horton Elementary School are looking forward to a double dose of goodness as they not only get ready to go on a free shopping spree, but they get to do it alongside a San Diego Unified School Police Officer at the College Grove Target.

Launched in 2015, the True Blue Buddies program pairs an officer with a student, who this year gets to spend a $125 gift card on brand new clothing or shoes of their choosing.

The program is funded through a partnership with the Assistance League of Greater San Diego’s Operation School Bell

A total of 15 students from Horton Elementary in grades 3-5 were selected for the exciting day by their principal based on need, and may include students from low-income, military, or families experiencing homelessness. The student/officer interaction is considered the most important aspect of the program. The partnership can also foster a positive relationship and build trust with a student’s family.

NEWS RELEASE: Application Window Opens for School Choice at San Diego Unified

NEWS RELEASE

Application Window Opens for School Choice at San Diego Unified

Gives students the opportunity to attend district schools outside their neighborhood for 2025-26 year

September 24, 2024

SAN DIEGO – Is your child a budding actor, musician, or painter? Is learning to read, write, and speak a new language something your child may embrace? What about an intense focus on engineering, technology, or science?

Through November 4, families have the opportunity to enroll in San Diego Unified schools outside their neighborhood boundaries, including schools that offer highly specialized instruction that emphasizes everything from the arts and STEAM education to learning a second language and international studies.

All San Diego Unified families are eligible to submit a choice application for their children, as are parents of out-of-district students and those attending private or charter schools. More information about the 2025-26 choice window is available on the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options website

More than 10,000 students through all grade levels typically apply to San Diego Unified’s choice program, and last year roughly 85 percent who applied on time received a spot at one of their top three school selections.

School Choice enrollment is determined through a computerized lottery system. Weight is given to factors such as sibling enrollment and magnet program continuity. Priority is not given based on when the application is received during the enrollment window, provided it comes in by the deadline of Wednesday, November 4, 2024. After that date, applications will be processed in the order in which they are received, with the exception of active military families who will be given on time priority for applications submitted if they move into our district after the deadline. Click here to see specific programs offered by schools.

Families will receive an email notification by February indicating whether a student has been accepted or waitlisted to a school of choice.

Parent information sessions will be conducted via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. on October 2 and at 10 a.m. on October 3, in conjunction with our Family Engagement office. Login information is available at this link: https://www.sandiegounified.org/cms/one.aspx?pageId=28033813

The district offers personalized consultations for families who wish to discuss their options with an enrollment specialist, or for those having difficulty with the application process. The multilingual staff at the Family Welcome and Enrollment Center is available in English and Spanish at (619) 260-2410 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

NEWS RELEASE: Board of Education Names Fabiola Bagula, Ph.D., Interim Superintendent

NEWS RELEASE

Board of Education Names Fabiola Bagula, Ph.D., Interim Superintendent

Brings statewide, countywide, and community background to lead district

Tuesday, September 10, 2024

SAN DIEGO – The Board of Education named Fabiola Bagula, Ph.D., as Interim Superintendent on Tuesday, marking the first time that a Latina has been at the helm of California’s second-largest school district.

Dr. Bagula brings state, county, and community experiences to lead the San Diego Unified School District. She previously served as Adjunct Faculty for San Jose State University, and as a Senior Director of Equity and Executive Leadership Coach for the San Diego County Office of Education. In her role as Executive Leadership Coach, Dr. Bagula worked with Superintendents and their Cabinets across California, helping them design teams for student success. Dr. Bagula, whose son attended a District school, has served as a teacher, principal, Area Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, and most recently, Acting Superintendent.

“It is an honor to serve as Interim Superintendent for this District that I love so much. At the core of who I am, and who I will be as Interim Superintendent, is accountability. There is too much at stake for our students and their families, and the communities we serve. Whether we are talking about student outcomes, our budget, or the culture of our school community, we need to be accountable,” Dr. Bagula said. “For example, we need data that is available within three clicks so that our educators and leaders can take action to improve student outcomes. Or a financial audit to ensure that we are maximizing and effectively spending taxpayer dollars.”

Board President Shana Hazan said the District will benefit from Dr. Bagula’s leadership and education experience.

“Dr. Bagula understands the vision and values of our community and is uniquely positioned to move the district forward as Interim Superintendent. She is a compassionate and outcome-oriented leader who brings the stability our students and staff need as we navigate this period of transition,” Hazan said. “Not only is Dr. Bagula an accomplished and award-winning educator, she is also an incredible role model for our students and educators.”

A first-generation college graduate who was raised on both sides of the border by a single immigrant mother, Dr. Bagula is a graduate of UC San Diego and the University of San Diego, where she earned her Ph.D. in leadership studies.

Dr. Bagula has been instrumental in the design of several District initiatives, including: an agreement with Cal State San Marcos that offers eligible graduates of every district high school guaranteed admission to CSUSM; professional development opportunities to support educators and school administrators, such as adding a Middle School Area Superintendent; establishing the Office of Meaningful Graduation, the Equity Department, and the Data Insights and Systems Support Department; and district goals that help focus all work around student outcomes.

In the coming weeks, the Interim Superintendent will visit schools throughout the district to engage with students, staff, and families. Dr. Bagula is working with the District’s Office of Investigations, Compliance, and Accountability to ensure that all students, staff, and families have a safe and inclusive environment.

Dr. Bagula had been serving as Acting Superintendent since August 30, when the Board terminated its contract with former Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson.

San Diego Unified serves a diverse student population representing more than 163 countries, and 60 languages and dialects. Learn more at sandiegounified.org

Attached to this release are quotes provided by members of the San Diego and education community on Dr. Bagula’s appointment as Interim Superintendent.

News Release

Final Steel Beam Completes Structural Frame on Mira Mesa High School's New Classroom and Student Services Building

September 9, 2024

SAN DIEGO - The structural framework for Mira Mesa High School's new classroom and student services facility is now complete, with the final steel beam put into place on Friday.

Students and staff joined Board of Education Trustee Sabrina Bazzo and Acting Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula in signing the beam, then watched as it was hoisted and set into place.

Located at the front entrance on Marauder Way, the new facility is part of the second phase of the Whole Site Modernization project and will become the main campus entryway. Once the building is completed, the existing student services facility will be converted into new classrooms.

"Academics are paramount at Mira Mesa High School, and this new classroom building will reflect the dedication and commitment our students and staff make every day," said Mira Mesa High School Principal Jeff Sabins. "We are ecstatic to see how the new building and our new classrooms will enhance our students' experience."

Also part of the bond-funded project, aging classrooms and common areas were renovated, a new visitor and administrator parking lot will be added, shaded lunch court areas will be constructed, security will be enhanced, and all remaining portable classrooms will be removed.

"Seeing this framework today reminds me of our goal of creating a stable and joyful environment for students to succeed," said Bagula. "It's an honor to see the smiles on these students, knowing they will soon have a modern building to call home."

These upgrades follow a series of renovations at the 49-year-old campus.

In Spring 2023, construction was completed on baseball field renovations, which included new grass infield and outfield, foul ball fencing, and a CIF regulation backstop at the baseball field, a new public address system and drinking fountain, replacement of the announcers' booth, repairs to the dugouts and batting cages, and upgrades to grading and irrigation.

The field followed the completion of the first phase of the Mira Mesa High School Whole Site Modernization project, which included the construction of one of the district's largest music buildings, renovations to existing classrooms, upgrades to collaborative workspaces in the media center, and the creation of outdoor learning spaces.

Other bond projects include CCTE Engineering, Automotive Technology, and Culinary Arts facilities renovations and photovoltaic panels over the parking lots on the north and southeast sides of campus.

"The Mira Mesa community has invested in us for nearly five decades so it's our time to give back," said Bazzo. "The taxpayers who voted for our bond measures have given us the platform to upgrade all schools, including Mira Mesa High School."

Construction for the second phase of the Whole Site Modernization is anticipated to be completed in Summer 2027.
