Final Steel Beam Completes Structural Frame on Mira Mesa High School's New Classroom and Student Services Building
September 9, 2024
SAN DIEGO - The structural framework for Mira Mesa High School's new classroom and student services facility is now complete, with the final steel beam put into place on Friday.
Students and staff joined Board of Education Trustee Sabrina Bazzo and Acting Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula in signing the beam, then watched as it was hoisted and set into place.
Located at the front entrance on Marauder Way, the new facility is part of the second phase of the Whole Site Modernization project and will become the main campus entryway. Once the building is completed, the existing student services facility will be converted into new classrooms.
"Academics are paramount at Mira Mesa High School, and this new classroom building will reflect the dedication and commitment our students and staff make every day," said Mira Mesa High School Principal Jeff Sabins. "We are ecstatic to see how the new building and our new classrooms will enhance our students' experience."
Also part of the bond-funded project, aging classrooms and common areas were renovated, a new visitor and administrator parking lot will be added, shaded lunch court areas will be constructed, security will be enhanced, and all remaining portable classrooms will be removed.
"Seeing this framework today reminds me of our goal of creating a stable and joyful environment for students to succeed," said Bagula. "It's an honor to see the smiles on these students, knowing they will soon have a modern building to call home."
These upgrades follow a series of renovations at the 49-year-old campus.
In Spring 2023, construction was completed on baseball field renovations, which included new grass infield and outfield, foul ball fencing, and a CIF regulation backstop at the baseball field, a new public address system and drinking fountain, replacement of the announcers' booth, repairs to the dugouts and batting cages, and upgrades to grading and irrigation.
The field followed the completion of the first phase of the Mira Mesa High School Whole Site Modernization project, which included the construction of one of the district's largest music buildings, renovations to existing classrooms, upgrades to collaborative workspaces in the media center, and the creation of outdoor learning spaces.
Other bond projects include CCTE Engineering, Automotive Technology, and Culinary Arts facilities renovations and photovoltaic panels over the parking lots on the north and southeast sides of campus.
"The Mira Mesa community has invested in us for nearly five decades so it's our time to give back," said Bazzo. "The taxpayers who voted for our bond measures have given us the platform to upgrade all schools, including Mira Mesa High School."
Construction for the second phase of the Whole Site Modernization is anticipated to be completed in Summer 2027.
