FREE and FUN resources Parents can utilize while school is out to keep students active, healthy and sharp-minded during vacation

WHAT: Media is invited to visit the City Heights Recreation center for information on fun and free resources provided by The San Diego Unified School District that parents can take advantage of this Spring Break. San Diego Unified's Spring break runs from March 27 through 31 for traditional schools and March 27 through April 25 for year-round schools.

WHERE: City Heights Recreation Center, 4380 Landis St., 92105
WHEN: Tuesday, March 28, 2017 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

DETAILS:

1. STAY ACTIVE! – San Diego Unified "Play-All-Day" Joint-Use Fields OPEN for community use
Even though schools are closed for Spring Break, their joint-use parks/fields will be open. For six decades San Diego Unified School District has been maximizing the use of its facilities by developing joint-use agreements that benefit the schools and the communities around them. The school district has 76 joint use agreements with the City of San Diego for turf playfields and recreation facilities at which the schools use the facilities during school hours, then the communities use them after school is out and during school breaks.


2. FREE LUNCH! – San Diego Unified Food and Nutrition Services serving lunches all break long
San Diego Unified Food and Nutrition Services is once again serving free lunches at city recreation centers during the spring intercession, March 27 through April 25. Lunch is free for any child 18 years or younger. No paperwork, income verification or applications required.

This year, lunches will be served at:
City Heights Recreation Center
Colina Del Sol Recreation Center
Copley Price YMCA
North Park Recreation Center.


3. FUN FREE PROGRAMS! – Sign up for swimming lessons, arts and crafts programs, Teen Center events and lots more at a local Parks & Rec Center.
After enjoying your lunch, stay for some fun! San Diego Parks & Rec offer a variety of fun classes available during spring break!


4. STAY ENGAGED! - Avoid Spring Break "Brian-Drain"
San Diego Unified's Family and Community Engagement Department (FACE) will be on hand to share a few tips on how parents can avoid the "Spring Break- Brain Drain" by using their High Impact Home Strategies. High Impact Home Strategies, are research-based practices, linked to student learning, that when utilized by parents and caregivers at home, have been proven to have significant impacts on student learning and academic achievement in school.

San Diego Unified School Police "True Blue Buddies - Police Interaction with Youth" Mentorship Program Student Graduation Ceremony

WHAT: 5th grade students from Porter Elementary will graduate Friday from a school police mentorship program geared at building positive relationships with Police Officers at an early age. This program is unique to The San Diego Unified School District and due to its success and popularity will be implemented at schools throughout the district in the near future.

The yearlong mentorship program includes various events over the school year, including educational workshops and Holiday gatherings. The primary goal of the mentorship program is to provide support through small group mentoring, as well as instill positive values and teach lifelong lessons students will use throughout their futures.

More than 900 students will take part in the celebration of the civil rights leader's birthday at the San Diego Convention Center


WHAT: The 8th Annual Las Mañanitas Breakfast will host several hundred elementary and middle school students who participate in the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs at their schools. The San Diego Unified School District has 35 Cesar Chavez Service Clubs within the district. Since 2001, the Cesar Chavez Service Clubs have offered an exciting and innovative leadership development club. The Clubs are built on the ten values of Cesar Chavez and are designed to engage Club members in leadership and community service activities.

This year the event will honor widely acclaimed playwright Luiz Valdez, who is considered to be the founder of Chicano Theater. Luis Valdez will be honored for his lifelong influence on Chicano culture.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner among conference presenters at STEAM Leadership Series

WHAT: Students from SIX San Diego Unified High Schools will participate in a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) Leadership Series focused on career opportunities within STEAM fields. The Series will connect business leaders to San Diego Unified students in an effort to bridge the science, education and high-tech business communities and encourage Career Pathways that empower young women to dream big and pursue careers that will change the world.

The STEAM Leadership Series is a program of Intellectual Capital Chapple and Kids Eco Club in partnership with the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) with support from The San Diego Foundation, SDG&E, USS Midway Museum, Illumina, the Moxie Foundation, Farrell Family Foundation, and others.

Blackburn's tenure as Salk's president began on January 1, 2016.

Pantea Khodami Manager, Market Development at Illumina, MIT
[cid:image005.jpg@01D2A312.5F900AE0]Pantea has an undergraduate and graduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a minor in management from Sloan School of Business. She started at Illumina ~ 7 years ago and has had both managerial and technical roles at the company. She has been a product manager, a senior application scientist and now a market manager. One of her career highlights is launching the HiSeq X Ten instrument, the system that broke the 'sound barrier' of human genomics by enabling the $1,000 genome. In her spare time, she mentors high school students applying to top universities and helps MIT with the interview process of the applicants. She has also been part of the board for MIT chapter of San Diego as the VP of Programs. She deeply believes in giving back and empowering more women to achieve their highest potential.

Ida has a master's degree in Electrical and Computer engineering and after graduate school, was recruited to work at Illumina as a senior engineer. Before joining Illumina Ida worked on design and development of a biomedical device for vain detection. She holds a patent in her name for this invention and through this experience Ida found her love for engineering devices which can help human health. Ida has been with Illumina for 8 years and has led different teams from Instrumentation Design/Development to Operations (Outsourcing/Cost saving) to Consumables Software Management. She currently works in the bioinformatics department as the core team lead for a very exciting project related to Internet of Things (One part of the project that she can share is to make Illumina sequencers Smarter.) Ida loves traveling, wine tasting, cooking and yoga.

Corina Antal, a Salk research associate in Ronald Evans'<http://www.salk.edu/scientist/ronald-evans/> lab, has garnered attention for her leading work on proteins that suppress tumor growth. The 29-year-old landed a spot on Forbes' 2016 "30 under 30" list that is comprised of "bright entrepreneurs, breakout talents and change agents" in 20 sectors. Antal was also named a Damon Runyon Fellow in November 2015 by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation for her efforts to increase the efficacy of pancreatic cancer therapies.
